I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the
eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me
whispered something, but I didn"t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was
trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I
happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.
Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to remain in the room when all
the other students were dismissed. As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it
meant to grow up; she talked about how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be
responsible for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized the fact that
when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I
would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out
of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.
Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk
to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl"s test paper. I tried to explain
about the pen, but all she could say was that it seemed very strange to her that I hadn"t talked of anything
about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing
the girl a favor by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued to believe that I had cheated on the test.
1. Form the passage, we knew the story appeared_______.
A. in a teacher"s office
B. in a language lab
C. in a school playground
D. in an exam room
2.What did the girl want me to do?
A. help her write with a pen.
B. use an extra pen to write.
C. aid her to get out of trouble.
D. sit next to me.
3. When the teacher saw this, she asked the boy_____.
A. to stay behind after the exam
B. to stop to take the exam
C. to leave the room at once
D. to continue writing his paper
4. Why was I puzzled after my teacher talked to me at that time?
A. because I didn"t understand what she said.
B. because I doubted if what she said was right.
C. because I didn"t know she was joking with me.
D. because I doubted if she was complaining to me.
5. From the third paragraph we can infer that my attitude to my teacher is ______.
A. dishonest
B. honest
C. disappointed
D. negative

enough, there was another note from the Room Fairy ___30   for them, thanking them for their nice "gift"
of a clean room and   31   asking them to play a certain violin   32  . Each day, thank--you notes would

Sometimes the Room Fairy would propose a little   34  : "If you can finish your homework and   __35
your lessons before dinner, I" d like to watch a particular television program with you tonight." Sometimes
some colored markers or other little items would be left in   36 of  well done jobs the day   ___37  .
38   I can"t remember how long "the Room Fairy" continued leaving her love notes. When they were
age appropriate, we used various versions of Post-Its(贴条). The bathroom mirror became the   39
centre of our home. Appointments, notices about visiting relatives, lesson schedules, and changes in plans
could be posted.
We all benefited from and   40  the idea of sharing reminders and daily details of life through notes. I
believe the true advantage of the Room Fairy notes survives in our frequent and enjoyable communication.

The summer I was ten, my mother decided to bring us to the world of art. My brother and I were not
very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take
drawing classes or painting classes but that we would have to spend one afternoon a week with her at
the Fine Arts Museum. Before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting
styles(风格). It was almost as bad as being in school. Who wants to spend the summer thinking about
artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool?
First we had to read about ancient Egyptians(古埃及人) and their strange way of painting faces and
then go to look at them at the museum. My 12-year-old brother thought this was so funny, but I was not
interested. Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange
long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly (鬈曲的) hair and with no
clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. I certainly couldn"t see what was so great about art.
On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary.
In it, a woman was reading to a child. The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother" s expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I couldn"t stop looking at this painting ! I wanted
to see every painting Mary had ever made! It was really worth looking at so many paintings to find a
painter who could interest me so much.

1. The aim of the mother" s plan was to _________.
A. take them to visit the museum
B. introduce them to the world of art
C. ask them to read about artists
D. show them different painting styles

2. What was the writer" s experience in the museum before the last visit?
A. She came to feel her mother" s love.
B. She liked many paintings.
C. She hardly enjoyed herself.
D. She could understand the pictures of fat babies.

3. What made the writer go through a change that summer?
A. One of Mary"s paintings.
B. A strange way of painting.
C. Artists in the Middle Ages.
D. Her mother" s instruction.

4. From the text, we can see _________.
A. the importance of curiosity
B. the effect of art
C. the value of learning
D. the power of family education
