President Barack Obama shouldn’t be surprised if his approval rating among students has plummeted( 陡然变差 ). In a recent speech about US education, he called for extending the school day and year. "The challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom. Why more time? Because US students are falling behind students in other countries," he said.
More school
US schools need to lengthen school days and the school year. If we intend to stay competitive with the rest of the world on test scores and in the job market, we need to add classroom hours and get rid of summer break almost entirely. As President Obama said. South Korean students spend mere than a month longer in school — and achieve better results than us.
The current two-term school year and the school days that form it were developed based on an old system of agriculture. The long summer break allowed children to be home to help tend the fields. It is not necessary anymore. It may not be popular to cut summer break or extend school days, but that’s the only way to improve US education and get back the American jobs lost to foreign countries.
Home Time
Adding school hours won’t solve the problems with our school system. The USA is different from other countries. US families have full schedules, with participation in sports, community groups, and other interests. In places such as South Korea, where only several hours of a day aren"t spent on school work, children don t have time to participate in many of those activities.
Giving kids time outside of school allows them to grow in other areas. That’s just as important as learning fractions (分数). Fingers shouldn"t be pointed at the school year for being too short, but at teachers and schools that don"t challenge their students and just pass kids along to the next grade. We do need to hold ourselves accountable for an education system falling behind other countries, but we also need a solution that actually works.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白出的最佳选项。选项中有两项多余选项。
    71
Frankly, I very much appreciate myself. Yes, I admit I’m in many respects(方面) not as good as other people, but I don’t think I’m always not good. When I find what I’ve done or written is okay, I’ll remain pleased with myself for quite a few days, and in case I receive praise for it, I’ll even become so excited as to add a few words to glorify(赞美)myself.
True, I’m not modest at all.     72   But I think otherwise.
73   I appreciate anything good. Isn’t it unfair to forget appreciating myself while appreciating others?
We Chinese are generally inclined(倾向的) to be modest, and we take pride in being so. For example, a Chinese will call his own wife zhuojing, meaning “my humble wife”, and his own writings zhuozuo, meaning “my poor writings”. But if you should call his wife a “rustic(乡巴佬) woman” or his writings “trash”, he would , I’m sure, slap the table in a rage and declare he would make a clean break with you.     74
I don’t think it’s wrong for you to freely praise yourself if you’re really worthy of praise. As we know, there is an old Chinese saying disparaging(轻视的) a melon peddler, named Lao Wang, who keeps praising his own goods. Well, why can’t he praise his melons if they are really weet and juicy?
Friends, Lao Wang sells melons for a living. How could he carry on business if he, by imitating the affections of us intellectuals(知识分子),were to show false modesty about his melons? He would sure enough die of starvation.
Self-appreciation is therefore key to professional dedication(贡献) and enjoyment of work..     75    Needless to say, the same is true of those who make a living with their pen.
A.I also appreciate other people.
B.On Self-control
C.On Self-Appreciation
D.People may call me conceited(自负的).
E. We need appreciate ourselves.
F. One will lose confidence in continuing with writing when heceases(停止) to admire his own essays.
G. As a matter of fact, there is probably no differenc at all between what is said by him and you respectively(各别地).

If you are hungry, what do you do? Have your favorite meal and stay quiet after that? __76__ But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about your friends or favorite stars. So it silently serves your needs and never lets itself grow. When mind loses its freedom to grow, creativity(创造力) gets a full stop. __77__ Why reading but not watching TV? It is because reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from childhood. Since it develops other aspects of our life, we have to take help from reading.
Once you read a book, you run your eyes through the lines and your mind tries to explain something to you. __78__ Now this seed(果实) is unknowingly used by you to develop new ideas. If it is used many times, the same seed can give you great help to relate(联系) a lot of things, which you would have never thought of in your wildest dreams!
This is nothing but creativity. __79__ Within no time you can start talking with your friends in English or any other language and never run out of the right words.
So guys, do give food for your thoughts by reading, reading and more reading. __80__ Go and get a book!
A.The interesting part of the book is stored(存储) in your mind as a seed.
B.Why not do some reading while you are hungry?
C.Just like your stomach, your mind is also hungry.
D.Now what are you waiting for?

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
“You do not need to be a rocket scientist.” Americans hear these words often.
People say them in schools, offices and factories. Broadcasters on radio and television use them.
How did the expression begin? No one seems to know it. 66 “It grew,” he says, “because rocket scientists probably are the most intelligent people around.”
Not everyone would agree. Some people might be considered more intelligent than rocket scientists. For example, a person who speaks and reads fifteen languages, or a medical doctor who operates on the brain. Still, many people would agree that there is something special about scientists who build rockets. 67
Moving pictures from before World War II showed a man named Buck Rogers landing on the planet Mars. He was a hero who could withdraw any enemy from outer space. The rocket scientist is a different kind of hero. 68
Rocket scientists, however, can have problems just like everyone else. A Washington rocket scientist tells about a launch that was postponed many, many times. Finally, everything seemed right. Mechanical failures had been repaired. The weather was good. The scientists had planned that part of the rocket would fall into the ocean after the launch. All ships and boats within many kilometers of the danger area had been warned. But in the last few seconds a small boat entered the area. 69
70 One scientist said, "As a child I loved to build rockets. Now I am grown. I still love to build rockets. And now I get paid for it."
A.he or she makes space travel possible.
B.It’s dangerous for rocket scientists to build rockets.
C.Maybe it has something to do with the mystery of space travel.
D.When the work goes well, most rocket scientists enjoy their jobs.
E. Have you ever heard of the space travel?
F. But an official of the American space agency, NASA, says the expression just grew.
G. Once again, the launch was put off.
