We are in a world full of competition. Our parents compete with others in their offices, our brothers and
sisters compete with others in their colleges, (1)and we compete ______ our ______ in school. Most of us give
up in the face of competition and will never be successful. (2)为什么我们不可能比别人做得更好呢? One
important reason is that we have no self-confidence.
In fact, everyone was born equal. You can do what others do. Although your classmates may be better than
you in some ways, you may be better than them in other subjects. (3)So everyone has his or her advantages.
Don"t look at things from a single point of view. Try to discover your own advantages, and believe that you can
do better than others in those ways.
Competition is not so terrible. Don"t be afraid of it. And don"t be afraid of those classmates who are better
than you. Remember that self-confidence is the first step to success. Believe in yourselves, and you will be
successful one day.

I think that the most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. When
people are   1  , there"s no need to do   2   but receive them. Listen to what they"re saying. Most times letting
someone talk is more   3   than understanding it.

that they once had something just like that happened to them. Finally she stopped talking to most people and

A loving silence often has far more power than the words.

任务型阅读。
Think of life as a game in which you are playing with five balls in the air. You name them work, family,
health, friends and spirit (精神) and you keep all of them in the air. You will soon understand that work is a
rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce (弹跳) back.
But the other four balls, family, health, friends and spirit, are made of glasses. If you drop one of these, they
will be broken. They will never be the same. You must understand that and try to have balance in your life.
How?
Don"t look down on your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different and each
of us is special.
Don"t let other people set goals for you. Only you know what is best for yourself.
Don"t give up when you still have something to give. (3) Nothing is really over until the moment you stop
trying.
Don"t be afraid to fight difficulties. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.
     Don"t shut love out of your life by saying it"s impossible. (4) The quickest way to receive love is to give it;
the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly (紧紧地)
; the best way to keep love is to give it wings.
Don"t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you have been, but also where you are going.
Don"t be afraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless (失重的). It"s a treasure (珍宝) you can always carry easily.
Don"t use time or words carelessly. You can"t get them back.
Life is not a competition, but a trip, step by step.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery (秘密), and today is a gift: that"s why we call it "the present".

完形填空。
Learning experiences happen to us in our lives. Not long ago, I had one that I would like to share.
I was going to Marblehead   1   my sailboat team. The team was racing down the high-way   2   we felt
hungry. Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand-new (崭新的) $20 bill. I was so   3   because I had
never had that kind of cash before. But spending it on food seemed like throwing it away. We all rushed into the
pizza line.   4   I got a pizza and a drink, and walked to my table. About halfway through the meal, I   5   I had
not handed any money to the cashier (收银员). I had just walked out, and nobody had noticed. I felt terrible.
My conscience (良心) opened its mouth and swallowed (吞) me in one big bite. I couldn"t get over it. I just
couldn"t go back to the cashier and   6   my stolen pizza. I was so upset (不安的) that I refused to give myself
the pleasure of an ice cream for   7   that someone would say, "Hey, Jeff. Why don"t you use the change from
the pizza instead of that nice, new $ 20 bill?" I was not so proud of my cash now..
For the next two years, whenever the "pizza thing" came to my mind, I would say to myself, "Don"t think
about it…"
I have learned two things from this   8  . Maybe I was a fool giving in to my conscience, and being too
stupid to have a free pizza. But the real   9   is that even if you get away from what you have done, your
conscience will catch up with you.
This goes with the saying, "A coward (懦夫) dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies one." I was a coward and
have felt terrible   10   at least a thousand times. If I had been a "hero" and gone back to pay for the pizza, I
would have felt a little uncomfortable about it only once, or maybe twice.

When a terrible earthquake hit, many people were killed and many houses fell down. After the earthquake, all
the newspapers reported many stories about some of the families who were in trouble.
One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper, a special picture touched me. It gave the clothing sizes of
each family member. I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were
less lucky than themselves. I said to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan. "We
have so much, and these poor people now have nothing. We"ll share what we have with them.”
I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this, I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and
donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and games
and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later she came back with Lucy, her much-loved
doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. "Oh, dear," I said. "You don"t have to give Lucy. You love her so
much." Meghan said, "Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she"ll make another little girl happy, too."
I looked at Meghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. It"s easy to give something that we don"t
want any more, but harder to give what we cherish (珍爱), isn"t it?
