Parents can see that their children are very skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today"s children are short of self-respect and self-confidence.
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills that they need to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework. Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking requires patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and finish his job successfully step by step. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and lots of self-confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse(激发) his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.

I imagined being signed by some famous model companies. For .months, any boredom or disappointment that I faced disappeared because I knew I would soon have the chance to be a real model. I thought I would appear in the covers of famous magazines!
Of course, I wasn"t signed, but what hurt the most was being told that if I grew to 5"9" (about 1.75 meters) I could be a success. I sprayed for a growth spurt(冲刺) because I could not imagine giving up my dream. I met with a local modeling agency and the agent required $500 for classes, $500 for a photo shoot(拍摄), and $300 for other fees. My parents only agreed after hours and hours of my begging.
The agency sent me out on a few auditions but with every day I did not receive a call, I grew more disappointed. The final chance came in July after I had decided to focus on commercial modeling. There was an open call(公开挑it) in New York City. We spent hours driving and spent another few hours waiting, only to be told that I was too short, I could hardly stand it.
Years later, I realize that the trip to New York was good as it made me notice I didn"t actually love modeling, just the idea of it.1 wanted to be special and I naively(天真地)decided to reach an impossible goal. The experience has made me stronger and that will help me in the future.

When I 7 the classroom, I was wet shivering (发抖) with cold. The physics teacher had already begun his lesson. It was Mr Smith. He was about fifty years old. All the students were a little afraid of him and—so was I. I liked neither him nor his physics lessons. I hesitated (犹豫) for a moment, and then I opened the door. “I’m very sorry, Mr Smith. I"m late again,” I said with a red face.
“It’s you again, Jim,” Mr Smith said 8 , “I’ve told you not to be late, but you... ” He suddenly stopped and looked at my wet clothes. He turned to 9 and said, “I’m very sorry, my boys and girls,” With these words he quickly took off his own jacket and handed it to me. “Now, take off your wet coat and put this one on, or you"ll catch cold. ” he said kindly.
I went to my seat with Mr Smith’s jacket on. It was a bit larger for me but I felt very 10 in it. I found, for the first time, physics was so interesting and how well I could understand it!

My name is Liu Fang. For a long time, I dreamed of doing something in Western China and last year after I left my college, I became a volunteer (志愿者) teacher. It has changed my life completely!
I traveled a long way from Yangkang Railway Station to a small village by bus in the noth part of Qinghai province. On my way there, I thought about the village, the school, the first day and the children there. However, my heart sank (沉下) when I arrived there. It wasn"t what I thought of. It didn"t look like a school at all! How small it was! The school had only three rooms, one for Grades 1, 2 and 3, and the other for Grades 4, 5 and 6. There was a third classroom for me.
The children welcomed me warmly on my first day. They asked me a lot of questions and I told them stories about myself and my life in Shanghai. The next day, I gave them a test to find out their level (水平). To my surprise, over half of the students didn’t pass the test, but they all wanted to learn new things.
I spent many nights getting ready for the lessons, reading test papers and marking homework. I enjoyed teaching these lovely and hardworking children, and I could see that they were making progress (进步) with my help. I have also learned a lot from them. I understand their lives better, and I realized that they really needed me a lot.
I have worked in the village for a year now. I"m very happy and the experience has been very useful for me. Now I know how to look after myself. I love the children. In fact, I would like to go on working here.

小题3:How was she getting on with the children?
小题4:What did she think of her work experience in the village?

However, in the afternoon, when we finished our picnic at one o’clock, it was dark and windy. Soon, there was a shower. Unluckily, none of us brought an umbrella. We ran about but we could find no place to hide.
Twenty minutes passed and it was still raining. There were hours to go before we reached the campsite (野营地). It was even worse that our small compass (指南针) showed that we went to the wrong way. We had lost our way!
We had to make a quick decision as it was raining heavily. Chris said we could set up a tent to hide in, so Mary and Tom helped to set up the tent. Chris and I tried to make a fire to keep us warm. But we were unable to light the fire, as everything was wet. We dried ourselves, chatted and waited inside the tent. At about five o’clock, it stopped raining. We decided to give up the camping trip because all of us had been very tired.
This camping trip may not be very successful but we know each other better. And the most important thing I’ve learned from this trip is the importance of team spirit.
