Most people can think of a sport they would love to see in the Olympics. But they often don"t realize
how hard it is to add a sport to the Olympics. A sport needs to be well-organized and popular before the
Interracial Olympic Committee (IOC) will consider it. An international federation must govern (控制) the
sport by making rules and making sure athletes meet Olympic standards (标准). What"s more, men from
at least 75 countries and women from at least 40 must play the sport.
However, even meeting those conditions isn"t enough. The IOC always tries to keep the member of
athletes at about 10,000 for each Olympics.Since most modern Olympics already include so many athletes,
introducing a new sport often means cutting other events.
The country that hosts the games is allowed to suggest what new sports should be included. While new
sports are added to the Olympics, most of them will simply become events in another sports meeting. In
Beijing, open water swimming will become part of swimming, while women"s steeplechase (障碍赛) will
be added to athletics.

of a taboo sometimes makes people feel uncomfortable. I learned this through my own experience.
Last weekend, Wang Lin and I showed two foreigners around our city. Mr. Singh was from India and
Mr. White from the USA. When I held out my left hand to shake hands with him, Mr. Singh seemed to be

of his hand.
In the evening, we stopped at a restaurant for dinner. I noticed that Mr. Singh didn"t touch the beef and
Mr. White seemed not to like chickens" claws(爪子). During the meal, Wang Lin said sorry to Mr. Singh and
continued to explain that we didn"t know it was a taboo in India to shake one"s left hand. Mr. Singh explained
that since oxen (牛) are sacred (神圣的) in India, people don"t eat beef there. Mr. White joined in and said that

In some places, people use a bicycle to get to work. In other places, bicycle riding is a very popular exercise
to people who live in cities. But who invented the first bicycle? In 1791, a Frenchman named Comte de
Sovran invented and owned the first bicycle. Mrs. Sovran rode (骑) the bicycle in Paris. The handles (把手)
and the seat were wooden. This bicycle was very difficult to move. A rider even had to pick up the front
wheel to change direction. Finally, the bicycle had no brakes for stopping or pedals for the feet! Riding a
bicycle was a great risk.
In 1817, a German named Baronvon Drais de Sauer burn made the first bicycle better. The seat became
more comfortable. The wheel could now change direction. His ride in the forest took only one hour instead
of three hours on foot, which surprised people at that time.
Sauer burn brought this kind of bicycle from Germany to France. Then Denis Johnson, an Englishman,
made a bicycle for women. It had space for their dresses to hang down. But these bicycles still had no brakes
or pedals, and riders often got hurt. These bicycles and the people who rode them were not very popular.
It took another forty-five years for the bicycle to become popular. More than 100 years later, bicycle riding
is more popular than ever. In fact, in India and China, there are still many more bicycles than ears.
