Every object tells a story. Even the most ordinary objects can present to us powerful images. Sometimes it is the ordinary nature of these objects that actually makes them so extraordinary. Such is the case with an old leather shoe in a museum in Alaska. At first glance it does not look like much. It is a woman’s shoe of a style popular in the 1890s. But what is unique(独特的) about this shoe is where it was found. It was discovered on the Checkout Pass, the famous trail used by the people seeking gold in Alaska. Who it belonged to or why it was left there is not known. Was it perhaps dropped by accident as the woman climbed up the 1500 stairs carved outface? Or did she throw away goods that she didn’t need in order to travel lighter?
Over 100, 000 people with “gold fever” made this trip hoping to become millionaires. Few of them understood that on their way they would have to cross a harsh wildness. Unprepared for such a dangerous journey, many died of starvation and exposure to the cold weather.
The Canadian government finally started requiring the gold seekers to bring one ton of supplies with them. This was thought to be enough for a person to survive for one year. They would carry their supplies in backpacks(背包) each weighing up to fifty pounds; it usually took at least 40 trips to get everything to the top and over the pass. Whoever dropped the shoe must have been a brave and determined woman. Perhaps she was successful and made it to Alaska. Perhaps she had to turn back in defeat. No one will ever know for sure, but what we do know is that she took part in one of the greatest adventures in the 19th century.

4. No matter what happened to the woman who owned the shoe, _______.

the following passage.
The awards started in 1929. Their full title is "The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
Awards". The Academy is a group of people who have worked in the film industry for many years. They
decide who will receive the awards. The awards are often referred to as the "Oscar". This is a nickname
given to the awards by a lady called Margaret Herrick. She was once the director of the Academy and she
once said that the little gold statue reminded her of her uncle Oscar!
The Oscar is always an exciting event. Each year, at least one unusual thing happens. When the Italian
actor and director Roberto Benigni won an Oscar for best foreign film, he danced on stage! When Gwyneth
Paltrow, the star of Shakespeare in Love won the Oscar for best actress, she could not make her acceptance
speech because she was crying so much with happiness!
In 1987, Roberto Benigni won the award for best director for a film about the last emperor of China.
Since then, Chinese film and actors have started to make an impact at the award. Crouching Tiger, Hidden
Dragon was a huge success and it won the award for best foreign language film in 2001. It also won several
technical awards for its amazing "flying" people. We expect to see more awards for Chinese film in the near
future.
It"s time for the Oscar again. Once more, the stars will dress up in their finest and go to Kodak Theater.
There, they will find out who had won the awards for best actor, best actress and best director. Millions of

crying and laughing as they receive their awards.1. Who give the awards? [ ] A. In 1927.

and phrases, usually through borrowing. Just as someone borrows a pencil from a classmate in order to
finish work, languages borrow words from other languages in order to fill what is called a "word gap". A
word gap happens when a language has no term, synonym, or easy translation for an object or activity.
One way a language finds something to fill a word gap is to borrow a word from another language. Unlike
a person, language never really returns words to their starting place. Instead, the words remain and become
part of the borrowing language. We see this borrowing course at work in English in different ways and for
different reasons.
English, like any other language, will probably continue to borrow words from other languages as long
as it continues to change — in other words, for as long as people continue to speak.A spoken language changes 1. _______ new words and phrases. NBA fellows, they"ll say "Sure".
In the NBA, hip-hop music is as common as the jump shot. Hip-hop is similar (相似的) to rap (说唱)
music and is especially popular with young African Americans. This music is played before basketball games
or during halftime. Many of the players, like Shaquille O"Neal of the Los Angeles Lakers, write rap rhymes
when they travel on airplanes from one city to another.
The NBA has a closer connection to hip-hop than any other sports league. This is partly because of the
large number of African-American players, but also because the basketball league just loves hip-hop. Every
February, the NBA invites popular rap singers to perform (表演) at its All-Star weekend.
When they play basketball, some of the younger stars even try to look like hip-hop singers. Like rap
stars, they don"t smile in photographs and videos. They try to trouble the players on the other team by looking
tough(凶). "Hip-hop is just part of many players"culture (文化) ," says Kerry Kittles, a player on the New
Jersey Neis
team. "All of us grew up listening to rap and playing basketball, and the rappers grew up doing the same thing.
A lot of players want to be rappers, and a lot of rappers would like to be players."
Master P. is a famous rap star who wants to be a basketball player. The Charlotte Homets and the
Toronto Raptors have invited him to their training camps. They enjoy listening to his music, but many people
think that he is not good enough at basketball to be on an NBA team.
Shaquille O"Neal, whose nickname is Shaq, is the greatest example of an NBA player who became a
rapper. He has made four successful rap albums. One of his rap songs, "It Was All a Dream," tells how he

say what they mean at work, Robert Phipps, a UK body language expert, tells you how to understand it.
If someone has the same idea as yours, they"ll often have the same posture (姿势) as yours. But if a
person"s body and feet are turned away from you even though they"re looking at you, it means they"d rather be
moving the way their feet are pointing.
Most people cross their arms if they have different ideas. So even if someone says they agree with you,
if they then cross their arms they really don"t. So try to find out what"s the matter with them or draw them out
by handing them something to look at or asking them to do something, such as writing something down.
If you"re training someone, it"s useful to know how their mind works. If a person"s eyes move up and to
the left while you"re talking to them, they think of information actively, if the eyes only move left they think of
sounds, but eyes moving to the right and down shows they learn through their feelings.

beauties of the countryside. This was not because the woods and fields were always far away, but because they
were too far away from the city to permit people to make a day trip between morning and nightfall.
In 1907, a young German schoolmaster had an idea which changed this state of affairs. He decided to turn
his little schoolhouse into a dormitory for the summer holidays. Anyone who brought his sleeping bag and
cooking equipment along could stay there for a very small quantity of money. The idea was a success. A few
years later, the schoolhouse was much too small to hold the many young people who wanted to stay there. As
a result, a dormitory was set up in an old castle nearby. This was the first Young Hostel.
Today, young students and workers of every country can meet in the hostels and get to know each other.
When young people arrive at a hostel, they have only to show their card of membership in a hostel organization
in their own country. This card will permit them to use the facilities of hostels all over the world for a very low
price.
Often, at the evening meal, a group of boys and girls from various parts of the country or the world will
happen to meet at the same hostel. They may put their food together and prepare a dinner with many kinds of
dishes. Sometimes a program will be organized after the meal, with dances, songs, or short talks followed by a
question period. One can learn a lot of things about other places, just by meeting people who come from those
places. For this reason, a few weeks spent"hostelling"can just be as useful a part of one"s education as classes
in school.阅读理解。 Even a child knows that nodding the head means "yes". But some people will probably be puzzled when the

Try to imagine what first few months of your life were like. I am sure you just spent most of your time
eating, sleeping and crying. As you grew older, you were awake more of the time. It took your parents more
time to play with you and talk to you. You watched and listened curiously (好奇). You began to know that
people made certain sounds to go with certain things.
Then you began to try making the sounds you heard. And step by step you were able to make the right
sound for one thing.
On that day you came to understand the secret of language. The secret is that a certain sound means a
certain thing. One sound might be as good as another. But it is no good as a word unless everybody agrees
on its meaning. Only when a group of people use the same set of sounds of things, can they understand each
other. Then, and only then do these people have a LANGUAGE.

The Olympic Games have changed a lot since they were first held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Back then,
winners got silver medals instead of gold ones. Sounds strange, doesn"t it? People thought silver was better than
gold. Also, no women ran in the first Olympics, and only 14 countries took part. China was not one of them.
But those aren"t the only differences.
The Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin (顾拜旦) was the man who really wanted the Games to start
again. His idea for the modern Olympics came from the Greek Games thousands of years ago. He hoped they
would help to bring world peace.
But it took time for the Olympics to become popular. Not many people thought they were good ideas in
1896, so they were put together poorly. Some tourists even ran in races! Today, more than 10,000 people from
about 200 countries take part.
In the early years of the Olympics, there weren"t many sports. Most events were track and field (田径),
much like in the first Greek Games. Events usually took place in the Panathenaic Stadium (雅典体育场), and
you can still see it today. Players did not wear their countries" colors in 1896. Their clothes were not like the
uniforms people wear today. In fact, players weren"t even picked by their countries back then. They traveled to
the Games by themselves and had to use their own money to take part.
New sports have been put into the Olympics over time, like badminton and table tennis. Some older games
are no longer played, like tug-of-war (拔河). It would be hard to see all the events at this year"s Games. There
will be over 300!
Swimming was different in 1896. There was a 1,200-metre race in the sea. A boat took swimmers out
into the sea and left them to swim back to land. Sometimes rough water made the race dangerous. The first
person ever to win that race was Hungarian Alfred Hajos. He seemed happy just to finish."I just wanted to live.
That"s more important than winning," he said. When people or teams won events in 1896, they didn"t get the
same things as now. They got olive wreaths (橄榄枝花环) to put on their heads and silver medals.1. In the first Olympic, winners were given . [ ] A、gold medals and olive wreaths

of the nation in five words. However, there is a small problem. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
are not, in fact, a nation and have different cultures. It seems it is impossible to find a national motto to join the
country.
Who first had the idea of looking for a motto? British Prime Minister (首相) Gordon Brown started it: He
suggested it as part of a public discussion to decide "the ideals (理想) that put us together as a nation".
Newspapers couldn"t wait to get the game started. So they asked website readers to tell their own
opinions. The one that won a Times Online poll (投票) is "No motto please, we"re British". You may wonder
what it really means. The suggestion is that British people don"t like to go to the trouble of having a motto.
However, it also suggests that Britain is a place with a long history and rich culture:"We don"t need a motto.
We know who we are. We have done quite well without one for over 2,000 years, thanks."
Although the discussion seems mainly lighthearted (轻松的), it also has a serious side. The British
government is worried that Britain is losing its cultural identity (特性). While Britain has a seat at the United

no special celebrations for these birthdays, but each is a time when a person can do new things to mark
their transition (转变) into adult-hood (成人时期).
After turning sixteen a person can work, get a driver"s licence and leave home. Many high school
students learn to drive and get part-time jobs soon after celebrating their sixteenth birthday.
At the age of eighteen a person in the United States can vote and smoke, but they are prohibited from
going into many nightclubs, buying wine or gambling (赌博) until they are twenty-one.
In many Latin (拉丁的) cultures, a young woman"s fifteenth birthday is important. At this age, she is
regarded as an adult. To mark this special day, families with teenage daughters have a celebration called a
Quinceanera. The day begins with the young woman and her family going to church. Later, there is a party
and many guests are invited.
In Japan, young people become adults at twenty. At this age, they can legally (合法的) vote, drink wine
and smoke. The second Monday in January is a national holiday called Coming of Age Day. On this day,
twenty-year-olds celebrate by first going to a church to pray with their families. Later, they listen to
speeches given by city and school leaders. Afterward, many celebrate with family or friends late into the
night.

like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between (1) _________ English
and _________ English.
First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans don"t say each word separately. They say
several words together. Americans may say "I dunno" instead of "I don"t know." Or they may say
"Whaddya say?" instead of"What did you say?" However, the British are more careful in their speech.
They usually say all the words and keep them separate.
(2)Sound is not only the difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes
have different meanings too. Some American words are never used in England. The same thing is true
of some British words in America. For example, the vocabulary for cars and driving is very different.
Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.
Many expressions are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone
your friends, you "phone them up". In America, you "give them a call". When you are saying goodbye
in England you might say "Cheerio!" In America you might say "See you later."
There"re also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb "do"
when they ask a question. They say "Do you have a storybook?" But the British often leave out the
helping verb. They say "Have you a storybook?"
All these differences can be confusing (易混淆的) if you are learning English. But most languages are
like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in
different ways. This is what has happened to English. It can also happen to other languages, such as
French. Many people in Canada speak French. (3)但是他们的法语和法国的法语不一样.1. 在(1)处填上合适的词 ________________ ________________
