English people put sugar in their porridge, but the Scottish always put salt in it.
English people always drink tea out of cups, not out of glasses. They usually drink tea with sugar
and milk. When you go to an English family for tea, the host or hostess always asks you, "How many
lumps of sugar do you want in your tea?"
In ordinary English families, the main meal is in the evening, because most of the families are away
during the day. But on Sunday when everybody is at home, they make the midday meal, and in the
evening they have a much lighter supper.

But there is another kind of language you need to know — the language of the body.
All over the world, people "talk" with their hands, with their heads and with their eyes. When
Japanese people meet, they bow. When Indians meet, they put their hands together. What do
Americans and British people do?
Americans are more informal (不拘礼节的) than the British. They like to be friendly. They use
first names, ask questions and talk easily about themselves. When they sit down, they like to relax in
their chairs and make themselves comfortable.
British people are more reserved (矜持的). They take more time to make friends. They like to
know you before they ask you something of your home.
When British and American people meet someone for the first time, they shake hands. They do
not usually shake hands with people they know well. Women sometimes kiss their women friends,
and men kiss women friends. When a man meets a man friend, he just smiles, and says "Hello". Men
do not kiss each other or hold hands. Even fathers and sons do not often kiss each other.

When we get help from others, we say "Thank you". So "Thank you" is very popular among us Chinese
students. But is it as popular in the UK?
The answer is "no". Here is a recent survey in the newspaper. "Thank you" is only the 20th most
popular way of showing gratitude (感激) in the UK.
The survey shows that British people like "Cheers" most. For example, when friends invite each other
for a drink after a game, a smile and a "Cheers" may be the best way to say "thanks". "Cheers" also means
"ganbei" in Chinese.
You may often hear the word between two good friends. "Great", "nice one" and "all right" are also
popular ways of showing gratitude.
Of course, there are some formal (正式的) ways to say "thanks" among British people. For example,
when a stranger is especially helpful, they may say "brilliant" or "much appreciated (感谢)" to show their
gratitude.
By the way, British people usually like to say: "You"re welcome", "No problem" or "Sure" to answer "
thank you".
