people can live and grow food. They are learning a lot about the deserts. But more and more of the earth is
becoming desert all the time. Scientists may not be able to change the desert in time.
Why is more and more land becoming desert? Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing
bad things to the earth.
Some places on the earth don"t get much rain. But they still don"t become deserts. This is because some
green plants are growing there. Small green plants and grass are very important to dry places. Plants don"t let the
hot sun make the earth even drier. Plants don"t let the wind blow the dirt away. When a little bit of rain falls, the
plants hold the water. Without plants, the land can become a desert much more easily.

When Wang Boxuan, a Beijing high schoolboy, uses up his exercise books, he does not throw them away.
Each one is stored at his school with hundreds of exercise books given by other students. Then they are sold to
a Beijing paper making factory.
The paper is recycled and used again by students and teachers in the school. At the same time, the money
made from the sales goes towards schools in Inner Mongolia for planting trees and grass. This place is one of
the sources of the sandstorms that often attack Beijing during springtime.
Wang"s school is one of the schools in the capital that take part in the"green promise"environment protection

to try, because sleep keeps you healthy and it stops you getting fat.
Recently, a group of US scientists did a study (调查) of kids aged between8 and 13. The study found that if
kids sleep for just one extra (额外的) hour each day, the chance of their getting fat is cut by about 30 percent
(30%).
Why? when people don"t get enough sleep, they become tired. When they are tired, they don"t exercise
enough. Also, kids like snacks. If they are awake (醒着的) an extra hour or two each day, they have more time
to eat snacks or other unhealthy foods.
So, how much sleep should you get? Scientists suggest 10 to 11 hours a night for kids aged 5 to 12. For

no one else was going to pick it up.
I live near a forest in Ohio, America. I can walk there 2 three minutes. I used to love going there to play
with my dog. But one day there was 3 much litter there that I became very unhappy. I decided to clean up the
forest, and I wanted to 4 happy when I went again. I made my first trip to clean the forest that afternoon. I
took a big black rubbish bag with me. Ten minutes 5 I started to pick up litter, my bag was full! There were
cans, bottles, broken glass and newspapers in it.
From then on, I 6 to the forest four times a year to pick up litter. I often stay there for three hours. It
makes me feel 7 to do something for the environment. After each trip, I look through all the litter that I"ve
collected. If 8 of it is recyclable (可回收利用的), I"ll keep it. I can"t understand why people drop litter. But I
will keep on picking it up 9 they stop dropping it. I know I am only doing a small bit 10 the earth, but I still
think it is important.
