college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages or homes
for the aged. They read books to the people in these places, or they just visit them and play games with them
or listen to their problems.
Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean up, or
repair their houses, do their shopping or mow their lawns. For boys who no longer have fathers there is an
organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to baseball games or on
fishing trips and help them to get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers.
Each city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or learn crafts (手艺). Some
of these clubs show movies or organize short trips to the mountains, the beaches, museums or other places
of interest. Most of these clubs use a lot of high school and college students as volunteers because they are
young enough to remember the problems of younger boys and girls. Volunteers believe that some of the
happiest people in the world are those who help to bring happiness to others.

appear, one of these problems is that it is difficult for these children to get education in cities.
Luckily, there are some free schools for them, but they are not enough. Ten-year-old Li Xin is one of the
lucky girls who get a chance to study in one of these schools. Although she has to spend about two hours and
change buses twice, she is very happy. As a child from a migrant worker"s (外来务工人员) family in the city,
finally she has been given the chance to study. 1_________, these free schools are their best choice, because
they can have free classes, textbooks, uniforms and meals in the school for two years.
But there is a long way to go, 2_________, because running a school is not easy and needs a lot of money.
A school officer said that they needed at least one million yuan to run the school. "Luckily, some people and
companies donate money, used books and a lot more other things to help us. Also some people work as
teachers for free." he added.

eat almost anything that is offered to them. A child often likes food unless it is badly cooked. Never ask a child
whether he likes or dislikes a food, never discuss likes and dislikes in front of him or allow anybody else to do
so. If the father says that he hates fat meat or the mother refuses some vegetables in the child"s hearing, he may
copy this action. Parents should agree to the fact that he likes everything and he probably will . At meal times, it
is a good idea to give a child a small part at one time rather than give him as much as he may eat all together. Do
not talk too much to the child during meal times, but let him get on with his food. And do not allow him to leave
the table at once after a meal, or he will soon learn to eat his food hurriedly so he can hurry back to the toys in

Sometimes you don"t think your parents are fair to you. When you want to dress in a modern way, your
mum doesn"t like you wearing a mini-skirt. When you are making phone calls to friends, they ask if you"re
speaking to a boy or a girl. Sometimes it seems that you" re not as close to your parents as you used to be.
How can you become close again?
"Closing the Gap" by American author Jay McGraw gives advice on how to have a better relationship with
your parents. He gives ways to help you under-stand your parents. When you think "my parents don"t want
me to have any fun," that usually means your parents want you to be safe. Both parents and children have
needs. They need to feel they are important and loved.
You should tell your parents your needs, and find out what their needs are. Then, you can think of a way
to make all of you happy. He gives you some ideas:

②. Keep a diary. This is to help you understand more about yourself and your feelings.
