There are few families in the United States that do not have either a radio or television set. Both of
them have become a necessary part of our daily life, keeping us filled with the news of the day, teaching
us in many fields of interest and making us happy with singing, dancing and acting?
Marconi, the Italian inventor, who gave us the radio, probably didn"t know how much his
great invention would have done for the world in the years to come. Radio had, perhaps done as much
as any other communication tool. Things of the world can be reported to people everywhere a few
seconds after they happen. Travelers in out-of-the-way places, ships at sea even astronauts round the
earth are able to keep in touch with each other by radio.
Television is another important invention. It lets us see as well as hear the actor. Since its appearance,
TV has done a great deal in the daily life of people everywhere. Many programs are now televised in
color.
Perhaps the most modem invention is"Telstar",a"star"moving round the earth. It makes it possible
for the people all over the world to be closer than ever before. Now a family in Chicago can watch on
TV a motor-car race in Italy , a table tennis competition in Beijing or a volleyball match in Japan as these
events are actually happening!
1.The passage tells us that______in the USA have no radio or television set.
A. a large number of homes
B. all the families
C. few families
D. quite a few homes
2.Why does the passage say the radio and TV have become a necessary part of our daily life?
A. Because they have touched nearly everything in our life.
B. Because men would not live happily without them.
C. Because they are the only ways to spread information.
D. Because no communication means no life.
3. What is the use of a "Telstar"according to the passage?
A. To receive and store information only?
B. To move around the earth just like the moon.
C. To give light onto the earth at night.
D. To help broadcast radio or TV information to the world.
4.Who do you think the writer of the passage is?
A. An Italian.
B. A Japanese.
C. An American.
D. A Chinese reporter.
5. When the writer introduces Marconi in the second paragraph, he means ______.
A. he was just an Italian inventor
B. his invention has done much for the world
C. he had reported much to people all over the world
D. he helped people travel a lot around the world

"There is nothing left between the sky and the earth any more. Everything has  been pulled clown," said

Nobody clied in Pakistan, a country next to India. The city of Lahore was lucky. In   Lahore
American school, where I was studying, all of the students were safe. They were on the field, so most
children didn"t feel anything. The earthquake was felt by the teachers that were on the second floor.
However, though Mrs Young was also on the second floor, she didn"t feel anything. She didn"t know
what happened until a teacher told her about it. Those teachers who were on the other floors had
different feelings. Mr Emond, the maths teacher from Australia, said that when the earthquake started
he thought there was something wrong with him, but then another teacher said that it was an earthquake.
After those words, Mr Emond felt better. Mrs Davis and Mr Frost didn"t feel anything either.
My mother didn"t feel anything. She didn"t even know that it was an earthquake till she saw a
shaking (moving from side to side) light.  My dad saw the computer shaking and then he looked out

Dear Rolf,
The movie Slumdog. Millionaire seems to suggest that the child beggars (乞丐) of India are organized
by others and I"ve heard about this in other countries as well. As a traveler, what should l do when a kid
asks me for money?
                                                                                                                                           Randy
Dear Randy,
I think you"d better not give money to child beggars.
Child beggars are often controlled by some organizations. These poor children might be tools for
making money, but they"re still children,no matter what they have been forced to do. Even if the kid isn"t
the tool of some organizations, he or she is probably doing the same work for some adults-maybe some
family members who don"t care the child. Sadiy, children are exploited (利用) as beggars for simple
reasons which could be called"marketing": After all, kids have more earning potential (潜力) than adults.
It"s nice to sit down and chat with them for a while, even buy them a drink or a snack or play games with
them. They"re often very interesting people that have a story to tell if you can get them to open up.
Beggarsa of all ages are common sight for travelers and in general, it"s best to spend some time on a
given community before you give out your money.
At last, don"t be afraid to say no. This isn"t. always easy, but child beggars know that what they"re
doing can"t improve their lives, but only enrich those people who force them to beg.
