     The rose said:"I am the most beautiful plant in this forest."

drink from it. The birds can bring water to you if you ask the cactus for help."
     The rose fell ashamed (羞愧的), but asked the cactus for help. The cactus kindly agreed and the birds
filled their beaks with water for the rose"s roots (根).

阅读理解。     Helen Monson has always been interested in helping her community. Her first volunteer experience was
for the American Red Cross when she was in high school. When she was a school teacher, she also found
time to volunteer. One year, she organized a Super Saturday fun day for kids in the community. She also used

     Joe Biggs was a butcher (屠夫). His shop was in a village in one of the most beautiful parts of southern
England. He worked in it for many years while his father was there. Then, when his father reached the age
of 65, he stopped working in the shop. Joe was alone in it, so he had to work harder.
     Joe worked five and a half days a week. His shop shut at one o"clock on Thursday, and it was shut the
whole of Sunday. Saturdays were the busiest days.
     Joe had a big fridge in his shop, but he tried not to buy too much meat at a time.
     One Thursday a woman came into the shop at five minutes to one. "I"m sorry I"m very late," she said,
