史密斯先生和马汀先生都患了重病.他们都住在医院病房里.史密斯先生每天下午都可以坐起来一个钟头.他的病床紧挨着病房里唯一的窗户.而马汀先生只能每天都躺在病床上.他们俩一刻不停地聊天,谈论着家庭、家人、工作和快乐的往事.
每天下午当史密斯先生坐起来的时候,他都会向室友描述窗外的一切.马汀先生一直觉得史密斯先生的世界因为窗外的美景而变得更宽广.
窗外有个公园,美丽的河水从中穿过.史密斯先生告诉马汀先生,鸭子在河水里自由自在地游泳,孩子们在快乐地玩耍,河边长着五颜六色的鲜花和老树.
