If you want to use tissue lame as a base fabric, stabilize it first with a fusible woven cotton interfacing. Before applying the interfacing, preshrink the lame by pressing with a low to medium temperature setting. It will shrink right before
your eyes. Test the temperature of the iron on a corner of the lame before pressing
the whole piece. Too much heat will melt the lame.
You can even use a sheer fabric for the base. A sheer base and top layer with Tintzl, silk flowers, or threads in between might make a beautiful shawl for a fancy dress. However, you'll need to choose a complementary thread for stitching the layers together, because on a sheer base fabric, the bobbin thread as well as the top thread will be visible. You'll also need to encase the raw edges of a sheer base fabric with French seams when it is used in a project.
