My first student Marie was a 44-year-old single mother of three children. In the first lesson, I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn"t know which bus to take. When I told her I would get her a bus schedule, she told me it would not help because she couldn"t read it. She said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket because she couldn"t always remember what she needed. Also, she could only recognize items by sight, so if the product had a different label, she would not recognize it as the product she wanted.
As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie’s self-confidence. She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarket. After this successful trip, she reported how self-confident she felt. At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son, Tony, a shy first grader, with his reading. I found that helping Marie to build her self-confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before.
As a literacy volunteer, I learned a great deal about teaching and helping others. In fact, I may have learned more from the experience than Marie did.

Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment.
When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help.
Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said, "Richness, can you take me with you?"
Richness answered, "No, I can"t. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you."
Love decided to ask Vanity(虚荣) who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. "Vanity, please help me!"
"I can"t help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered.
Sadness was close by so Love asked, "Sadness, let me go with you."
"Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!"
Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her.
Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder. So blessed and overjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way.

As my 20-year anniversary (周年纪念) of being a cancer 36 approached, I wanted to do something special and 37. I organized a fundraiser, calling it “A Mission (使命) of Love” and thanks to my 38 family and friends, raised﹩4,000 for St. Jude’s, planning to 39 it myself. Three quarters of the money would be given as a (n) 40 to the hospital, and what was left would go toward buying 41 for the children. I also organized a T-shirt 42 activity for any child who felt well enough.
Thanksgiving Day seemed the most 43 day of the year for the mission, and so it was all arranged. We went to a store and 44 three shopping carts with toys. It was 45 we were celebrities (名人) when the employees and other shoppers knew what we were doing.
On Thanksgiving Day, as we got to St. Jude’s, I became 46 emotional, as my eyes were filled with tears of 47. After dropping the toys off, we arrived where six children were waiting anxiously to begin painting. To me, it was as though they weren’t sick, and to see them smile was the greatest gift I could have ever 48.
Leaving there that day, I knew I had finally found my purpose. All of us are born for a reason, but all of us don’t 49 why. Success in life has nothing to do with what you 50 in life. It’s what you do for others.

Last Christmas, at 39, I caught a disease which attacked my knees and eyes. At its worst I could hardly walk or see. For months I" d have to crawl (爬) across the floor to use the bathroom or get a drink of water when my husband wasn"t home. For a while I could only see shapes and colors so I couldn"t drive.
My parents kept begging me to let them come out to stay with me in Los Angeles, but our apartment is small and I knew there was nothing they could really do to help me. For the excellent health insurance my husband had through his job, I was receiving the best medical care possible.
My only problem was that I couldn"t drive to my doctors" appointments and I didn"t want my husband to keep missing work to drive me. Three days after I explained this to my parents, a check came from them with a note saying this was "taxi money". Several months later another check showed up from my brother to help make up our income since I wasn"t able to work. It probably goes without saying that I was extremely grateful to have family members who could and would support me during the hard time.
In terms of my day-to-day existence, I live in a village within Los Angeles called Brentwood so I was able to walk to the local post office, market, bank, and library. But once there, I had to depend on the kindness of strangers to help me. Los Angeles is a big city, but I lived in a village with a wonderful community (社区) of people who were kind and patient.
Slowly I became well. Life was good again and I thought I had a clear understanding of the blessings (恩惠) this illness has provided.

Several days ago, I met a stranger in the street who stopped and asked me directions. I 36 to show him the way to the destination(目的地),but to my 37 he coldly refused my offer. I asked him why. Finally he told me that he was 38 I would ask him for money if I 39 him in this way.
Money! I 40 deep into thought. Is it money that comes between us? Money itself has no 41 ; yet it cannot simply be 42 to be good or bad. The problem 43 what attitude we have towards it.
At present, we have a more 44 material life than before, but we’re becoming more and more 45 . Why? In my opinion, the 46 is the change in people’s personal 47 . They wrongly believe that 48 money should be their only aim in life, so they 49 all sorts of ways they can to 50 this aim.
They are afraid of being 51 and fooled. If everyone acts like this, what will our 52 be like?
Needless to say, money is becoming more and more important in our society, 53 it shouldn’t be the “be-all and end-all” of life. If a person only concentrates on 54 , he will be lonely and void(空虚).
It is up to us to make our lives happy, not money. We should try our best to help others 55 and freely. If everyone does so, our society will be better and better.
