阅读理解。     In the past industries had more freedom than they have now, and they did not need to be as careful as
they must today. They did not need to worry a lot about the safety of the new products that they developed.
They did not have to pay much attention to the health and safety of the people who worked for them. Often
new products were dangerous for the people who used them; often conditions in the work place had very
bad effects on the health of the workers.
Of course sometimes there were real disasters which attracted the attention of governments and which
showed need for changes. Also scientists who were doing research into the health of workers sometimes
produced information which governments could not ignore. At such times, there were inquiries into the
causes of the disaster or the problems. New safety rules were often introduced as a result of these inquiries;
however, the new rules came too late to protect the people who had died or become seriously ill.
Today many governments have special departments which protect customers and workers. In the U.S.,
for example, there is a department which tests new airplanes and gives warnings about possible problems.
It also makes the rules that aircraft producers must follow. Another department controls the foods and drugs
that companies sell. A third department looks at the places where people work, and then reports any
companies that are breaking laws which protect the health and safety of workers. 1. According to Paragraph 1, compared with today, industries in the past _____.  [     ]

阅读理解。     The gray-haired lady can"t wait to leave the building to search for her dad. Unless watched, she will walk
in the streets in an effort to find her father, who died 30 years ago.
Not all cases of Alzheimer"s disease look like this, but Alzheimer"s is a serious disease that is said to be the
fourth or fifth leading cause of death for people over age 75.
It is said that about three percent of the U.S. population over age 65 have Alzheimer"s. In the early stages,
people may exhibit short term memory loss. Some may experience changes in personality, easy to be angry.
As the disease progresses, patients might lose the ability to move and may be unable to speak or move at all.
This progressive disease generally lasts 8 to 10 years before death occurs.
While no one is certain what causes these changes in the brain"s nerve fibers, their effect is certain.
Alzheimer"s destroys not only the patients, but also spouses (配偶), friends and families.
What should you do if you notice progressive memory loss in yourself or a loved one? Have the person
examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of Alzheimer"s disease.
Though many reasons other than Alzheimer"s disease may cause memory loss, its early diagnosis (诊断)
and treatment may delay some of the most serious effects.
What feeling will you likely experience should a loved one suffer from Alzheimer"s disease? A person will
often go through the various stages of sadness, shock, anger, and so on. If the spouse develops the disease,
you may experience hurt and disappointment when he or she doesn"t remember you are married.
Life for the Alzheimer"s patients and their loved ones will never be the same as the disease progresses,
bringing a deep sorrow, loss and even anger towards God. No matter what feelings are present, facing them
honestly will serve one better than burying them. 1. What can be inferred from the passage about the gray-haired lady? [     ]
A. She has been living with her father.
B. She was sad about the death of her father.
C. She can"t search for her father without being watched.
D. She suffers from Alzheimer"s disease. 2. When people suffer from Alzheimer"s disease, _____. [     ]

C. they will certainly die in 8 to 10 years
D. they will forget everybody but their spouses 3. Memory loss occurs _____. [     ]

阅读理解。     "Just five more minutes." "I"m tired!" "I can"t get up." If you have ever had trouble getting up in the
morning, you are not alone. Many kids in the United States do not get enough sleep.
Your body needs sleep-and lots of it! "Evidence (证据) shows that elementary-age children need at
least nine hours of sleep per night," said sleep expert Dr. Carl Hunt.
Kids who do not sleep enough cannot do their best, experts say. A tired kid may be moody and act
badly. Being tired can also cause kids to forget things, have trouble learning, and have trouble playing
sports.
Not sleeping enough can also affect kids" safety. Experts say children who are tired are more likely
to suffer injuries.
Lots of kids lose sleep because they are busy. Many take part in after-school activities. Then they
go home, eat dinner, and do homework. Afterward, many kids watch TV, play video games, and surf
the Internet. That leaves less time for sleep.
Sometimes you may not be able to go to bed early. But, if you get a choice whether to stay up late,
think twice. A good night"s sleep can help you feel your best! 1. What is the best title for this story?[     ]
A. Kids Need More Sleep
B. Turn off the TV
C. Children Dream
D. Kids Have Busy Lives 2. According to the story, what is the main reason many kids do not get enough sleep? [     ]
A. They are afraid of the dark.
B. They are busy all day.
C. They get up early to do their homework.
D. They stay up late reading. 3. How could a good night"s sleep help you feel your best? [     ]

阅读理解。     "Old wives tales" are beliefs lasting for many generations. For example, most of us remember our parents"
telling us to eat more of certain foods or not to do certain things. Is there any truth in these teachings? Some
of them agree with present medical thinking, but others have not passed the test of time.
Did your mother ever tell you to eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes? Scientists now
report that eating carrots can help prevent a serious eye disease called macular degeneration. Eating just one
carrot a day can reduce the possibility of getting this disease by 40%. Garlic is good for you, too. It can kill the
type of virus that causes colds.
Unfortunately, not all of Mom" s advice passed the test of medical studies. For example, generations of
children have been told not to go swimming within an hour after eating. But research suggests that there is no
danger in doing so. Do sweets cause tooth problems? Well, yes. However, sticky sweets made with grains tend
to cause more problems than sweets made with simple sugars.
Even though science can tell us that some of our traditional beliefs don"t hold water, there is still a lot of
truth in the old wives" tales. After all, much of this knowledge has been accumulated from thousands of years
of experience in family health care. We should respect this body of knowledge even as we search for clear
scientific support to prove it true or false. 1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the test? [     ]
A. Eating garlic is good for our eyes.
B. Sticky sweets are damaging our teeth.
C. Swimming after a meal is dangerous.
D. Carrots prevent people from catching colds. 2. The phrase "hold water" in the last paragraph most probably means "_____". [     ]
A. to be believable
B. to be valuable
C. to be admirable
D. to be suitable 3. What is the author"s attitude toward "old wives tales" in the text?[     ]

阅读理解。     In 2004, the World Health Organization, WHO, warned of a possible outbreak of another serious disease
which may be even more deadly than SARS. The WHO believes that it is likely that bird flu will spread to
human beings in the next few years. If it does, up to seven millions people could die from the disease.
Diseases like bird flu are caused by viruses, that is, tiny things which change and become more dangerous
over time. When a new type of a common virus changes, it may be able to get past the body"s immune (免疫
的) system. If that happens, humans are in great danger until a cure or treatment becomes available.
There have always been viruses and people always get sick, of course, but as we saw with SARS, the
situation is more difficult today. People travel more than ever before, which means that disease can spread
quickly and across large areas-in fact the whole world.
Scientists are already working on drugs that will prevent or limit the effect of a new virus, but the process
takes time. It is just as important to make sure that countries, especially poor countries, are prepared to deal
with the disease. New disease usually affect poor areas the most, so we must help develop health care in all
countries. 1. The situation is more serious today because _____. [     ]
A. people travel more
B. people don"t eat healthy food
C. there aren"t enough hospitals
D. scientists can"t find a cure 2. From this passage we know _____. [     ]
A. bird flu will surely spread to human beings in the next few years
B. a virus changes and become less dangerous over time
C.SARS is 1ikely to come again in some years
D. poor areas usually suffers more from new diseases than rich areas3. The possible title of this passage is _____. [     ]
