may be affected by air pollution. Some scientists feel that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the
air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a "greenhouse effect"-holding in heat
reflected from the earth and raising the world"s average temperature. If this view is correct and the world"s
temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York,
Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be under water.
Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particulate (废气排往空中而形成的微粒、颗粒) matter
in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth"s temperature-a result that would be equally
disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to new ice age and would make
agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. At present we do not know for sure that
either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report prepared by experts in the field
concluded that the greenhouse effect is very likely). Perhaps, if we are very lucky, the two tendencies will
offset each other and the world"s temperature will stay about the same as it is now.

I think the government should pass a 1aw to stop people from letting their cats run free. There are three
important reasons why you should do it:
When cats run free, they hide themselves under bird feeders (喂食器) and kill defenseless (毫无防备的)
songbirds. Every time I put up a bird feeder, I find at least one dead bird in my yard. I"m sure all those birds
were killed by cats. And cats don"t even eat the birds they kill. Songbirds belong in our parks and gardens, but
cats don"t. Dogs never kill poor little birds. I don"t know why people don"t want a dog in the first place.
Cats are always using my garden as a litter-box. This is very dirty and makes me feel sick. Children can"t
play in the garden when cats have been there. Dogs are usually tied to trees, so they don"t cause such trouble.
Cats spread diseases when they use a garden as a litter-box, so I think this should be stopped.
Finally, letting cats run free is not even good for the cats. Sure, most cats want to go outside. Their
owners like to give them everything they want, just like spoiled children. But cats that stay indoors live much
longer than cats that run free. Cats are always getting hit by cars when they"re allowed to run free.
I"m sure that if you think about all the things I"ve said, you will work to pass a law stopping cats from
running free. This will improve our environment, make our parks and gardens cleaner, and even help the cats
themselves by making them live.

"As soon as I came home, I"d throw down my backpack, open the refrigerator and start eating.
Sandwiches, cookies, candy bars -I"d just eat until I went to bed," says Matt Wymer, 18.
Matt was a binge (无节制的) eater. According to a new study from Harvard Medical School, 3.5
percent of women and 2 percent of men suffer from this eating disorder.

Experts say the first line of treatment for binge eaters is to help them find other ways, besides food,

a new study has confirmed that atmospheric CO2 is also affecting the ocean chemistry and potentially harming
sea life.
Montana State University scientist Robert Dore has been researching the water in the Pacific Ocean
for almost two decades.
"We"ve been going to the same spot in the Pacific Ocean, and we try and characterize long-term change
in the open ocean environment. And one of the key things that we measure is CO2 levels. And we"ve been
able to record this increasing quantity of atmospheric CO2 into the ocean."
Scientists expected that as atmospheric CO2 increased, more and more of the carbon dioxide would be
absorbed into the ocean, affecting the chemical balance of the sea water, with a potentially harmful impact
on shellfish and coral in particular.
"As carbon dioxide dissolves (溶解) in the water, or seawater in this case, it forms a weak acid (酸),
carbonic acid," Dore explains. "And therefore, as the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere goes up and
that exchanges with the surface seawater, it drives the pH down, and makes it more acidic."
The seawater Dore and his colleagues have analyzed confirms what the theory predicts.
The effect was particular striking at about 250 meters down, and again at 500 meters. Dore and his
colleagues came up with two possible explanations. It could be that surface water picked up CO2 and then
moved to those depths. Or there could be a biological explanation.
"It"s important to realize that the oceans are really becoming acidic. And it can have negative impacts on
a whole variety of sea life from fish to coral. It"s potentially catastrophic."
