pretended to be one of them. She copied their actions and way of life - eating plants and getting down on her
hands and knees to walk the way a gorilla does. It was a new relationship.
Diane Fossey was murdered in Rwanda in 1985 and her story was made into the popular film Gorillas in
the Mist. It was a long way from King Kong, which is about a gorilla as a monster (a frightening animal), and
helped to show a new idea: the real monster is man, while the gorilla is to be admired.
Today there are thought to be around 48,000 lowland gorillas and maybe 400-450 mountain gorillas in the
wild. From the Congo in West Africa, to Rwanda and Uganda further east, they are endangered by hunting and
by the cutting down of their forest homes.
Some time ago, I found in my letterbox a little magazine from the World Wide Fund for Nature. It had two
photos side by side. One was of a young gorilla. "This is a species of mammal (哺乳类动物)," said the words
below it. "It is being destroyed by man. We must save it for our own good." The other photo showed a human
baby. The words also read, "This is a species of mammal," but then went on:"It is the most destructive (破坏性的) on earth. We must retrain it for its own good."
B. the gorillas in Rwanda
C. the protection of the gorillas
D. the film Gorillas in the Mist
B. Lowland gorillas live longer than mountain gorillas
C. King Kong showed us that a gorilla is admirable
D. Diane Fossey was murdered by a gorilla
B. Both man and the gorilla need to be saved.
C. Young gorillas are as lovely as human babies.
D. Man should live peacefully with the gorilla.

something most cars can"t: nm on solar energy-energy from the sun"s light and heat!
Joshua Bechtold, 14, and the other students at the Riverside School in Lyndonville, Vermont, worked
many months to get Helios ready for the 1999 American Tour de Sol ("Sol" is the Latin word for "sun").
They named their car after Helios, the sun god in Greek mythology (神话).
The 4-year-old Tour de Sol encourages the use of "green", or environmentally friendly, cars to help
reduce pollution and save energy. It"s not a race. Cars are judged on fuel efficiency (耗油量) rather than
speed. In the week-long event, 44 cars took the 350-mile tour from Waterbury, Connecticut, to Lake
George, New York. Of the 23 student cars, Helios was the only one built by middle school students.
A teacher drove Helios, but the children talked with people wherever they stopped along the mad. "That
was my favorite part," says Anna Browne, 15. "We explained how the car runs."
Due in part to old, inefficient batteries (电池), Helios finished fourth-out of four-in its kind, the sun-
powered class. "We were there for the fun of it," Anna says. "We"re proud of Helios," says Ariel Gleicher,

mountains are a splendid sight when viewed from the valley floor. Lots of stores, hotels, and restaurants are
needed to handle the crowds. Also, water, roads, and other service systems are part of the infrastructure
(基础设施) that must be maintained.
Unfortunately, these systems are starting to break down. It"s not just in Yosemite but in national parks
around the nation.
Yosemite is thirty years old according to Dennis Galvin, a National Park Service worker. The park is not
only old but worn out. Two or three times as many visitors come every year. That is too many visitors for the
parks to deal with.
Four years ago a storm washed out a water pipeline in the Grand Canyon. The National Park service had
to send water trucks to provide water for the visitors. Last month pipes almost broke again and roads had to
be closed for a while.
Why hasn"t the National Park Service kept up the park repairs? There is a lack of money. The United States
has 378 monuments, parks, and wilderness areas. Between three and four billion dollars are needs for repairs.
Yosemite is one national park that does have money for repairs. It has two hundred million dollars but
cannot spend it any way it chooses. When the park workers started widening the road, they were forced to
stop by the Sierra Club. The club claimed that the road work was damaging the Merced River that runs through
the park.
A sierra Club lawyer, Julia Olson, feels that the infrastructure needs to be moved out of Yosemite. That way
less pressure will be put on the already crowded park.

Green building means"reducing the impact (影响) of the building on the land", Taryn Holowka of the
U.S. Green Building Council in Washington, D.C., said.
According to Holowka, building account for (占了) 65 percent of total U.S. electricity use.
But green building can reduce energy and water use. Also, the building are often located near public
transportation such as buses and subways, so that people can drive their cars less. That could be good for
the environment, because cars use lots of gas and give off pollution. Green building are often built on
developed land, so that the buildings don"t destroy forests.
Marty Dettling is project manger for a building that put these ideas into action. The Solaire has been
called the country"s first green high-rise building. According to Dettling, "We"ve reduced our energy use by
one-third and our water by 50 percent,"
The Solaire cuts energy in past by using solar power. "On the face of the building we have solar panels
which change the sun"s energy into electricity," Dettling explained.
The solaire also has lights that automatically turn off when people leave the room. In addition, the building
has lots of windows, allowing people to use the sun for light during the day. The solaire cuts water reusing it.
Not everyone is eager to move into a green building, however. Some people think that things like solar
panels cost more money than more traditional energy sources. Anyhow, Holowka said, "It"s going to be big."

consumer demand for environment (环境) friendly products have contributed to the pollution problem.
One result is that millions of tons of glass, paper, plastic, and metal containers are produced, and these
are difficult to get rid of.
However, today, more and more consumers are choosing "green" and demanding that the products they
buy should be safe for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these: "Will this
shampoo damage the environment?" "Can this metal container be reused or can it only be used once?"
A recent study showed that two out of five adults now consider the environmental safety of a product
before they buy it. This means that companies must now change the way they make and sell their products
to make sure that they are "green," that is,friendly to the environment.
Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products in supermarkets, but now there are
hundreds. Some supermarket products carry labels (标签) to show that the product is green. Some
companies have made the manufacturing (生产) of clean and safe products their main selling point and
emphasize it in their advertising.
The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companies rethink how they do business.
No longer will the public accept the old attitude of "Buy it, use it,throw it away, and forget it. "The public
pressure is on, and gradually business is cleaning up its act.
B. companies,desire for bigger sales
C. new ways of doing business
D. rapid growth of supermarkets
B. Business Goes Green
C. Shopping Habits Are Changing

Department of Food Nutrition, says children are consuming more meat and soft drinks. That is a thorough
departure from the traditional diet of vegetables and rice and little meat. "They like big pieces of fried meat with
a soft drink. So although they may eat the same volume of food, their calorie intake (卡路里摄入量) has
increased. Now about 40 to 45 percent of their calories come from fat," says Chwang.
Although on the whole Asians tend towards thinness, culture -namely Asians" hospitality (好客)-is a reason
for the fatness of today"s generation, according to Chwang. "Asian people love food," she says. "Eating and
drinking are important social and family functions." In the past, however, big meals were only hosted on special
occasions as people were more careful with money. In today"s climate of wealth and remarkable consumption,
10-course meals are no longer reserved for significant occasions.
More than anyone else, children are on the receiving end of their parents" improved circumstances. "In the
past, people had four or more children-now, they have one or two, so they tend to spoil them," says Chwang.
"The easiest way is to give them "quality food". Parents think feeding them well is showing their love. They feel
bad when their children look thin."
When describing the physical condition of most overweight Asian children, Chwang says:"There is a clear
relationship between fatness and indoor play. Children get fat because they don"t move, and eventually, they
don"t want to move because they"re fat.
Thanks to technology, a growing army of children prefer video games to old outdoor sports. "What do
children do when watching TV or sitting in front of the computer playing video games? They eat chocolate and
drink Coke," says Chwang.
B. Asian children depart from their diet tradition.
C. Asian children eat big meals on more occasions.
D. Culture contributes to the fatness of Asian children.
B. qualified food
C. agreeable food
D. high-calorie food
B. their children don"t have a good physical condition
C. they feel that they don"t take good care of their children
D. they feel that they are not wealthy enough to afford "quality food"
B. find reasons for increased food consumption of Asian people
C. explain why many Asian children are overweight nowadays
D. prove the relationship between fatness and indoor play
