阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的词数要求)。     Most Chinese people don"t understand why some westerners
don"t eat meat. In China, to eat meat is a sign of wealth. If a
westerner doesn"t take a bite of their Peking duck, there is
something wrong. But many people in Europe and America choose
not to eat meat or fish - they are known as vegetarians. In the US
alone there are 12 million vegetarians and 19,000 more people
stop eating meat every week.
People often become vegetarians in order to lose weight or eat
more healthily.A lot of research has shown that vegetarian diets
are healthier than the average western diet. Fried chicken may be
delicious to eat, but all that extra fat can damage your heart.
There are many other reasons for "turning veggie". It could
be that you cannot afford to buy meat. Or maybe you just don"t
like the taste of it.
A large number of vegetarians choose to give up meat because
they believe it is cruel to kill animals for food. They believe many
animals are not allowed to live in comfort and, when they are
killed, it is carried out in a very painful way.
While some vegetarians are happy not to eat animals, others
take it one step further and refuse to eat any animal product. They
are known as vegetarians and will not eat cheese, yogurt (酸奶)
and eggs, or drink milk. Neither will they wear clothes or shoes
made from animal skin, such as leather.  They say that if it is
wrong to kill an animal for food, it is worse to kill it for clothing.
But there are some groups that go even further. Fruitarians
believe it is wrong to kill any living plant or animal. Besides____
____, they will only eat fruit and vegetables that have not
been killed when harvested. This means they cannot take an apple
from a tree: they must wait until the apple falls to the ground.
Only then can it be considered dead.1. What"s the best title of the passage?( Please answer within 10words.)

阅读理解。     A new weapon is on the way in the fight against smoking in Europe. Soon when smokers buy
cigarettes, they might see a shocking photo of a blackened lung or a cancer patient staring back at
them from the packet.
Some boys may think of smoking ascool and sexy. Their friends won"t agree
when they see their packets of cigarettes lying on the table.
The European Union announced onOctober 22, that it had chosen 42
photos that showed the damage cigarettes could do to the body. It called on member nations to
put these pictures on packets to discourage young smokers.
To catch the attention of teenagers, the special packets warn of long-term medical dangers, like
cancer. Short-term effects, like bad skin, are also on the list.
"The true fact of smoking is disease, death and horror. That is the message we should send to
the young," said David Byrne, an EU health official. "Hopefully these pictures will shock students
out of their love for cigarettes. "
The EU head office hoped the pictures would work better than current written warnings on packs
of cigarettes. The warning included "smoking kills" and "smoking can lead to a slow and painful death. "
So far, Ireland and Belgium have shown interest in the photos. Canada has used similar pictures and
warnings on cigarette packs since 2000. The country has recently seen a fall in the number of smokers.
According to studies, smoking is the single biggest cause of avoidable death in EU. Every year more
than 650, 000 smokers die, more than one person a minute.1. What would be the best title for the text?   A. New Ways to Stop Smoking

been arguing about the benefits and dangers of wolves. Some groups
believe wolves should be killed. Other people believe wolves must be
protected so that they will not disappear from the wilderness(荒野).
                           For Killing Wolves
In Alaska, the wolves almost disappeared a few years ago,
because hunters were killing hundreds of them for sport.
However, laws were established to protect the wolves from
sportsmen and people who catch the animals for their fur. So
the wolf population has greatly increased. Now there are so
many wolves that they are destroying their own food supply.
A wolf naturally eats animals in the deer family. People in
the wilderness also hunt deer for food. Many of the animals
have been destroyed by the very cold winters recently and by
changes in the wilderness plant life. When the deer can"t find
enough food, they die.
If the wolves continue to kill large numbers of deer, their
prey(猎物)will disappear some day. And the wolves will, too.
So we must change the cycle of life in the wilderness to balance
the ecology. If we killed more wolves, we would save them and
their prey from dying out. We"d also save some farm animals.
In another northern state, wolves attack cows and chickens
for food. Farmers want the government to send biologists to
study the problem. They believe it necessary to kill wolves in
some areas and to protect them in places where there is a small
wolf population.
                     Against Killing Wolves
If you had lived long ago, you would have heard many
different stories about the dangerous wolf. According to most
stories, hungry wolves often kill people for food. Even today,
the stories of the "big bad wolf" will not disappear.
But the fact is wolves are afraid of people. and they seldom
travel in areas where there is a human smell. When wolves eat
other animals, they usually kill the very young, or the sick and
injured. The strongest survive. No kind of animal would have
survived through the centuries if the weak members had lived.
And has always been a law of nature.
Although some people say it is good sense to kill wolves,
we say it is nonsense! Researchers have found wolves and their
prey living in balance. The wolves keep the deer population
from becoming too large, and that keeps a balance in the
wilderness plant life.
The real problem is that the areas where wolves can live
are being used by people. Even if wilderness land is not used
directly for human needs. The wolves can"t always find enough
food. So they travel to the nearest source, which is often a
farm. Then there is danger. The "big bad wolf" has arrived!
And everyone knows what happens next.1. According to the passage, some people in North America  favor killing wolves for all the
following reasons EXCEPT that____.  A. there are too many wolves
B. they kill large numbers deer
C. they attack cows and chickens for food
D. they destroy the wilderness plant life2. Some people are against killing wolves because            .  A. wolves help to keep the ecological balance in the wildemess
B. there is too small a wolf population in the wilderness
C. there are too many deer in the wilderness
D. wolves are afraid of people and never attack people3.  According to those against killing wolves, when wolves eat  other animals,____ . A. they never eat strong and healthy ones
 B. they always go against the law of nature
 C. they might help this kind of animals survive in nature
 D. they disturb the ecological balance in the wilderness4. The last sentence "And everyone knows what happens  next. " implies that in such cases   ____.A. farm animals will be in danger and have to be shipped away
B. wolves will kill people and people will in turn kill them
C. wolves will find enough food sources on farms
D. people will leave the areas where wolves can live

任务型阅读    Safety in thehighway is not totally out of hands. Here are four
ways we canprotect ourselves when we travel.
You are safer in a  large car. People in small cars are
injured more often and more severely than  people traveling in
large cars. Factories of small cars are strengthening their
products" safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and
small cars on the road is the main reason of the problem.
Being thrown into glass and metal car parts, or being
thrown from the car, can really damage to you. That"s why
safety belts should be worn. The safety belt"s main purpose is
if your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or
object, or if it rolls over. A belt can reduce the chance of fatal
injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%.
Air bags are important. More than half of all new cars sold
have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal ( 正面的)
crashes-the type of crash that kills the most drivers-
when they are also wearing safety belts. Most people are
demanding air bags in the cars they buy. But the protection
provided by air bags is limited in side or rear crashes; effective
as they are, they can"t take the place of safety belts.
Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don"t
drink. Drunk driving is the most serious problem. Many people
have realized that drunk driving can lead to death and injury,
prison time and other results. There are movements to
strengthen penalties ( 处罚) for drinking and driving.1. What is the main idea of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words. )

harder. Now a new study by researchers at Penn State suggests
that the techniques that work for losing weight aren"t
necessarily the same as those that help keep you slim.
[2]First the researchers surveyed over 1,100 people who
had achieved significant weight loss and maintained ( 维持) it.
The researchers identified 36 weight-loss and weight-
maintenance practices that at least 10% of the group used.
[3]Then the researchers conducted a national telephone
survey of overweight people who had tried to lose weight and
keep it off with varying success: about 11% reported
successfully losing weight, and 21% were able to maintain that
loss for at least a year.
[4] The survey found people who ____ did so by
participating in weight loss programs, cutting back on sugar,
eating healthy snacks, not skipping meals and participating in
different types of exercise.
[5]Still,say many nutrition and obesity experts. The basic
principles of weight loss and maintenance are the same; you
have to eat a healthy diet and increase your exercise. People
who lose weight and keep it off tend to eat significantly
healthier foods and do a lot more exercise than the average
American.
[6] But what may maintain between weight-loss and
maintenance is a person"s attitude; rather than focusing on
actively losing weight in the short term. People have to start
focusing on long-term, permanent lifestyle changes and
behaviors, if they want to maintain the weight that"s been lost.
The key to success, experts agree, is motivation, not
necessarily the particulars of your weight-loss program.

charges are given for heavy use, but the solar system still makes sense for low-energy users such as
myself.
So much of Americans" carbon footprint results from buildings-about 43%, according to the U.S.
Department of Energy. I"m in a household of 1.5 (mom and 7-year-old), and we use only about 4
kilowatt hours of electricity per day, something we"ve managed through behavioral changes, such as
turning off the lights in rooms after we"ve exited, and through in-home efficiencies (效率), such as
swapping out all my light bulbs for energy-saving ones and using power boards that can turn off DVD
players, coffee makers and other electrical equipment.
Using less electricity means I can get by with a smaller, less expensive solar system that not only
covers my use but also produces a credit on my power bill. Going solar also meant my house was
upgraded with a time-of-use meter. This type of meter allows me to receive credit for the electricity I
produce during peak hours when electricity costs the most, but pay the least for the electricity during
off-peak hours, when I recharge my cell phone and laptop and perform other tasks requiring power.
The downsides are that I am tied in to the grid (电网) and still affected by power failure, and I now
have solar panels (太阳能电池板) that need to be cleaned. It"s a subject of debate, but REC Solar said
dirty panels decrease energy production by 6% to 8%.Many panel producers recommend cleaning
panels at least once during the summer. I wash mine whenever they look dirty or dotted with bird
droppings, which is about every other week.
I think $6,000 is a small price to pay, not only for panels that should produce my next 20 years of
electricity, but also for the greenhouse gases I"m not creating.1.What is mainly talked about in this article?A. The ways of cutting power bills.
B. The tips on reducing electricity use.
C. The benefits of using solar systems.
D. The importance of protecting the environment.2.Why does the writer recharge her mobile phones during off-peak hours?A. To save credit.
B. To save time.
C. To save energy.
D. To save money.3.The underlined word "downside" in Paragraph 4 is close in meaning to ______.A. discount
B. disadvantage
C. disapproval
D. disagreement4.The author cleaned her power panels ______.A. to make them work properly
