阅读理解。     My students often tell me that they don"t have "enough time" to do all their schoolwork.
My reply is often a brief "You have as much time as the president." I usually carry on a bit about there
being twenty-four hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that"not enough time" is not an acceptable
explanation of not getting something done.
Once in graduate school, I tried to prove to one of my professors by saying that I was working hard.
His answer to me was, "That"s irrelevant (无关的). What"s important is the quality of your work." Since
then I have had time to think carefully about the "hard worker" dodge (诀窍), and I have come to some
conclusions-all relevant to the problem of how much time we have.
If you analyze the matter, you can identify two parts of the problem: There is, of course, the matter
of"time", which we can think of as fixed. Then there is the problem of "work" during that time. But, as
my professor suggested, it"s not how hard one works but the quality of the product that"s important.
That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. That concept is perhaps best explained by a sign I
once saw on the wall in someone"s office:"Don"t work harder. Work smarter." There is a lot of sense in
that idea.
If you can"t get more time, and few of us can, the only solution is to improve the quality of the work.
That means thinking of ways to get more out of the same time than we might otherwise get. That should
lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since "work" for students usually means "homework", the
expression"work habits" should be read as "study habits".
Then, as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading and
writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that pay off in all your studies. 1. From the passage, we know that the author is probably _____. A. a poet
B. an educator
C. a novelist
D. an engineer 2. We can infer from the 2nd paragraph that we students still _____. A. have enough time
B. can meet the president
C. get everything done well
D. should accept the explanation 3. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. The author"s students make good use of their time to do all their homework.
B. The author tried to tell the professor that he/she (author) had done a good job.
C. You can"t improve the quality of the work if you can"t get more time.
D. You"ll try to improve your skills in reading and writing if you"re a clever student. 4. What"s the passage mainly about? A. Students don"t have enough time.
B. Don"t work harder; work smarter.
C. No one can get more time.
D. Read better and write better.

阅读理解。     Learning to save money when you"re young is an important lesson. All good lessons and habits begin
early, and saving is a skill that everyone needs. Many people-adults included-do not have a good sense of
saving for the long run.
I have been lucky to learn this lesson early because I have had a grass-cutting business since I was 10
years old. Of the money I make, I spend about 10 percent and save the other 90.
Making sure you save and don"t spend too much is a good way to build up wealth. I have put my
earnings in a bank. Many teens I know spend all the money they earn, so it never has a chance to grow.
Young people should realize that their teenage years are a great time to begin saving.
At high school, many parents pay for almost everything, so your expenses can be small. If you have a
job, you should have fun with some of the money. But you should also save some so that it will grow. Then
you can begin planning for your future. When you spend money, you not only lose that money, but also lose
the interest you should have earned by saving it.
After high school, college is expensive and then "real" life begins, with expenses such as food and rent. If
you can hold onto a good percentage of the money you earn as a teen, going to college and buying a house
will be much easier. The earlier you begin saving, the more time the money has to grow. If you are in your
thirties without any savings, you will always have to struggle, The earlier you begin saving, the easier it is to
create a nest egg (储备金). 1. According to the author, a man can build up his wealth by _____. A. finding a good job
B. saving money when he grows up
C. buying a house
D. saving money and spending less 2. The author seems to believe _____. A. it is hard to save money when in high school
B. if you have a job, you needn"t save money
C. when spending one loses more than the money he pays
D. going to college will be easier if you borrow money from the bank3. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Saving for future
B. Learning to spend less
C. How to save money
D. How to make money

阅读理解。     The iPhone, the iPad, the iPod, each of apple"s products sounds cool and has become a pad (一时的风尚).
Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter "i",-- and many other brands are following suit.
The BBC"s iPlayer-which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the internet-adopted the title in 2008.
A lovely bear-popular in the US and UK-that plays music and video is called "iTeddy". A slimmed-down version
of London"s Independent newspaper, was launched last week under the name "i".
In general, single-letter prefix have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and
e-commerce first came into use.
Most "i" products are targeted at young people and considering the major readers of the Independent"s "i",
it"s no surprise that they"ve selected this fashionable name.
But it"s hard to see what"s so special about the letter "i". Why not use "a", "b" or "c" instead? According to
Tony Thorne, head of Language Center at King"s College, London, "i" works because its meaning has become
ambiguous. When Apple uses "i", no one knows whether it means internet, information, individual or interactive,
Thorne told BBC magazines "even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn"t have one clear definition," he
says.
"However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability (轻便)," adds Thorne.
Clearly the letter "i" also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each
person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.
Along with "Google" and "blog", readers of BBC magazines voted "i" as one of the top 20 words that have
come to define the last decade.
But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to the 1990s, products with "2000" in
their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern. However, as
we entered the new century, the trend inevitably disappeared. 1. We can infer that the Independent"s "i" is aimed at _____. A. young readers
B. old readers
C. fashionable women
D. engineers2. The underlined word "ambiguous" means "____".A. popular
B. uncertain
C. definite
D. unique3. Nowadays, the "i" term often reminds people of the products which are _____. A. portable
B. environmentally friendly
C. advanced
D. recyclable4. The writer suggests that _____.A. "i" products are often of a high quality
B. the popularity of "i" products may not last long
C. the letter "b" replace letter "i" to name the products
D. iTeddy is a live bear

阅读理解。     How many people have I met who have told me about the book they have been planning to write but have
never yet found the time? Far too many.
This is Life, all right, but we do treat it like a rehearsal (排演) and, unhappily, we do miss so many of its
best moments.
We take jobs to stay alive and provide homes for our families always making ourselves believe that this
style of life is merely a temporary state of affairs along the road to what we really want to do. Then, at 60 or
65, we are suddenly presented with a clock and several grandchildren and we look back and realize that all
those years waiting for Real Life to come along were in fact real life.
In America they have a saying much laughed at by the English: "Have a nice day" they speak slowly and
seriously in their shops, hotels and sandwich bars. I think it is a wonderful phrase, reminding us, in effect, to
enjoy the moment: to value this very day.
How often do we say to ourselves, "I"ll take up horse-riding (or golf, or sailing) as soon as I get a higher
position," only to do none of those things when I do get the higher position.
When I first became a reporter I knew a man who gave up a very well paid respectable job at the Daily
Telegraph to go and edit a small weekly newspaper. At the time I was astonished by what appeared to me to
be his completely abnormal (反常的) mental state. How could anyone turn his back on Fleet Street in central
London for a small local area?I wanted to know.
Now I am a little older and possibly wiser, I see the sense in it. In Fleet Street the man was under continual
pressure. He lived in an unattractive London suburb and he spent much of his life sitting on Southern Region
trains. 1. The first paragraph of the passage tells us that _____. A. we always try to find some time to write a book
B. we always make plans but seldom fulfill them
C. we always enjoy many of life"s best moments
D. we always do what we really want to do 2. The underlined phrase "turn his back on" (paragraph 6) most probably means _____. A. leave for
B. return to
C. give up
D. rely on3. The man ( paragraph 6) left his first job partly because he was _____. A. in an abnormal mental state
B. under too much pressure
C. not well paid
D. not respected 4. What is probably the best title for the passage? A. Provide Homes For Our Family
B. Take Up Horse-riding
C. Value This Very Day
D. Stay Alive
