an eBay deal. So, I decided to try my hand at online auction (网上拍卖). Buying for beginners: Sign up on
www.ebay.co.uk. Most items (e.g. tables, computers, and books) ready for auction will come with a picture
and a short description; others may be marked with"Buy It Now" and have a fixed price. You can buy these
right away.
If the item is being auctioned, you offer the highest price you are prepared to pay and eBay bids (出价) for
you.The bid will be increased little by little until it goes beyond your highest bid, then you are emailed and asked
if you would like to bid again. Auctions last up to 10 days, and when they finish you get an e-mail telling you
whether you have won the item.
How to pay: Sellers decide how they would like to be paid and you need to check this before placing a bid
as you might not want to post a cheque or postal orders. The easiest way is through PayPal, an online payment
system that takes the money away form your credit card (信用卡).
Selling made simple: If you plan to sell on eBay, it helps to include a picture of the item. I followed my
friends" advice and put up the items I wanted to sell for a 10-day auction, starting on a Thursday.
The big things in life: It"s easy to post a small item, but furniture is a big part of eBay and this has to be
collected or sent by deliverymen. Check the ways of delivery before you bid.

windy. I welcomed it. Christmas was approaching. I noticed an unusual amount of traffic on our county
road. All of it was southbound.
"Lois, much traffic is going south today, have you noticed that?"
"It must be Christmas in the Country." she said.
"What"s that?"
"A lady turns her whole house into a Christmas open house for the weekend. Every room in the house
and the whole barn are filled with beautiful handcrafted (手工的) items. She serves wassail (酒宴) and
cookies and plays Christmas music. I hear it"s quite an event."
"Why don"t you take me?" she asked.
"Sure."
We all got in the car to check it out. The Christmas in the Country open house was on a country road
back a bit of lane. When arriving, we saw a field turned into a parking lot full of cars. We had to wait in line
to get in. Everyone was in a festive mood, laughing and joking. They were all dressed warmly and wearing
Christmas things. It was so delightful that we went back year after year and always looked forward to it.
The next year Lois sold her own crafts in the show and did very well for a number of years in a row there.
It was early in the Christmas season and a good way to get in a Christmas mood.
People will travel a long way for good things. If you can brighten their life they will usually find you
wherever you are. If you will help people in the hard struggle of life you will not be alone. That was true in
the beautiful countryside of Knox County Ohio and I believe it"s true in downtown Flint, Michigan and
wherever you live, too.

critics (批评家) seem to hate them because they think this entirely unproductive industry should absorb
millions of pounds each year. Why don"t they stop advertising and reduce the price of their goods?
The poor consumer (消费者)! He"d have to pay a great deal more if advertising didn"t create mass markets
for products. It is precisely because of the heavy advertising that consumer goods are so cheap. But we get
the wrong idea if we think the only purpose of advertising is to sell goods. Another equally important function
is to inform. A great deal of the knowledge we have about household goods comes largely from the
advertisements we read. Advertisements introduce us to new products or remind us of the existence of ones
we already know about.
Lots of people pretend that they never read advertisements, but this claim (说法) may be seriously doubted.
It is hardly possible not to read advertisements these days. And what fun they often are, too! Just think what a
railway station or a newspaper would be like without advertisements. Would you enjoy gazing at a blank wall or
reading railway bylaws while waiting for a train? Would you like to read only closely printed columns of news
in your daily paper?
We must not forget, either, that advertising makes a positive contribution to our pockets. Newspapers,
commercial radio and television companies could not exist without this source of revenue (税收). The fact
that we pay so little for our daily paper, or can enjoy so many broadcast programmes is due entirely to the money
spent by advertisers. Just think what a newspaper would cost if we had to pay its full price!
B. Advertisements keep the consumers fully informed of the goods.
C. Advertisers perform a useful service to the public.
D. Advertisements make the goods more expensive.
B. optimistic.
C. negative.
D. dissatisfactory
B. Because advertisement is a"waste of money".
C. Because customers are encouraged to buy more than necessary.
D. Because advertisements often misunderstand consumers.
B. We can buy what we want thanks to advertisements.
C. Good quality products don"t need to be advertised.
D. In terms of money, we benefit a lot from the advertisements.
October 19, 2003. Hundreds of people came to watch the end of his starvation experiment, which has
become one of London"s main tourist attractions.
Looking thinner and darker, 30 year-old Blaine was taken out of his box over the River Thames and
immediately went to hospital. He was then slowly reintroduced to food, a process doctors say could be
life threatening. He had been drinking only water since September 5.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Blaine first became known as a street magician in the early 1990s.
He soon found himself doing magic tricks in bars for the likes of American actor Leonardo DiCaprio and
his super model friends.
Over the last decade Blaine has become famous with a combination of breathtaking magic and clever
tricks aimed at getting a lot of attentionIn 1999, he was buried in a coffin (棺材) for one week and, in 2000,
he spent 62 hours in a giant block of ice. Last year he stood on top of a 25-meter pillar (柱子) in the center
of New York for 35 hours before jumping into a pile of boxes.
"I think a lot of people are unable to accept that they"re able to do what they can do," he said. "They
don"t realize we can survive. The human being is an amazing creation."
But he seems to have suffered from spending so long in the glass box. He said that at times he was

failure to wear a seat belt. It"s reported that seatbelt use has gone up by 10 percent since 2000, hitting a record
81 percent nationwide in 2006. And the agency reports that safety belts saved about 15,434 lives in 2004. But
for some groups, particularly teens and young adults, usage still lags. Sixty-two percent of the 5,135 young
people ages 16 to 20 killed when riding in passenger vehicles (交通工具) in 2004 were not wearing safety belts.
So if you"re the parent of a teen, remind them to fasten up every time they get into a car. Yes, even it"s just for

child safety seat.

in the back seat.
● All children who have outgrown child safety seats should be properly put in booster seats (幼儿加高座位)
until they are at least 8 years old or 4 feet, 9 inches tall.
● Once children outgrow their booster seats, they can use an adult seat belt in the back seat as long as it fits
properly.
● New rules require manufacturers(制造商 )to start using"smart" air bags for all 2007 cars. The new air
