Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They travel to see other countries and
continents, modern cities and the ruins of ancient tombs; they travel to enjoy particular places, or just for a
change of scene. It"s always interesting to discover new things, different ways of life, to meet different people,
to try different food and to listen to different music.
Those who live in the country like to go to a big city and spend their time visiting museums and art galleries
(艺术馆), looking at shop windows and dining at exotic (异国情调的) restaurants. City dwellers usually like a
quiet holiday by the sea or in the mountains, with nothing to do but walk, bathe and laze in the sun.
Most travellers and holiday-makers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that interests
them-the sights of a city, old churches and castles, views of mountains, lakes, valleys, plains, waterfalls, forests,
different kinds of trees, flowers and plants, animals and birds. Later, perhaps years later, they will be reminded
by the photos of the happy time they have had.
People travel by train, by plane, by boat and by car. All means of travel have their advantages and
disadvantages. And people choose one according to their plans and destinations.
If we are fond of travelling, we will see and learn a lot of things that we can never see or learn at home,
though we may read about them in books and newspapers, and pictures of them on TV. The best way to study
geography is to travel, and the best way to get to know and understand people is to meet them in their own
homes. 1. What is the main idea of the first paragraph? A. Why do so many people like to travel?

B. doing window shopping and dining at foreign restaurants
C. taking photos of what they are interested in
D. being reminded by the photos of the happy time they have had 3. The best way to study geography is ____. A. to travel to places and experience it for yourself

No one wants to look silly or do the wrong thing at a new job. It is important to make the right impression
(印象)-not the wrong one-from the very first day. You will face new people. You will be in a new place. It
may be difficult to know what to do. Here are six "dos" to help you make it through the first days at a new job.
Get to work on time. Employers value employees who come to work right on time. Give yourself an extra
15 minutes to make sure you arrive on time.
Pay attention to instructions. One of the first things your manager may do is to introduce you to your
workmates. These people will be important to you. They are the ones who will answer your questions when
the boss is not around.
Ask plenty of questions. Make sure that your manager has told you what is expected of you. If he or she
has not told you your job duties, ask for a list. Set daily and weekly goals for yourself ____. You should never
make personal phone calls to your friends and family unless it is an emergency.
Don"t take too long for lunch. What is the lunch-hour rule at your new job? You can find out from your
manager or your company"s personnel department. For example, do people eat at their desks or does everyone
take a full hour outside the workplace?
Never be the first one to leave. Observe how your workmates behave around quitting time. It does no
good for you to be eager to leave.

If you do not use your arms of your legs for some time, they become weak. When you start using them
again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this. Yet there are many people who do not seem
to know that one"s memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he
really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly. When someone else says that
his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.
If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he
has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us
realize that it is really his own fault. Not all of us can become very strong or very clever, but all of us can
improve our memory by the same means-practice.
Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have a better memory than those
who can? Why is this? Of course, because people who can"t read or write have to remember things: they
cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, prices, names, songs and stories,
so their memory is exercised all the time.
So if you want a good memory, learn from those who cannot read or write: practice remembering.
1. According t the passage, few people know that _______.
A. arms or legs become weak if they are not used for some time
B. when they start using their arms of legs again, they slowly become strong again
C. a person"s memory becomes weak if he does not practice remembering things
D. it is their own fault if their arms or legs are weak
2. The author thinks that if a person has a poor memory, ________.
A. it is his own fault
B. his parents are to blame
C. he is just unlucky
D. his arms must be weak
3. From Paragraph 3, we can learn that ________.
A. people who can"t read are cleverer than those who can
B. people who can"t write are cleverer than those who can
C. a little notebook helps people who cannot read or write get a better memory
D. people who practice remembering regularly have a better memory
4. The passage mainly tells us ________.
A. how to get our arms and legs stronger
B. how to improve our memory
C. how to read and write
D. how to remember dates and prices
