完形填空。     The question of whether war is inevitable is one which has concerned many of the world"s great writers. Before    1    this question, it will be useful to introduce some    2    concepts. Conflict,   3    as opposition among  social units directed against one another, is   4   from competition, which   means opposition among social units independently seeking to obtain something which is   5   short supply. Competitors may not
know about one another, while those who   6   in a conflict do. Conflict and competition are both classes
of opposition. The meaning of opposition has been stated as a process by which social units function in the disservice of one another; opposition is thus contrasted to cooperation, a   7   by which social units
function in the service of one another. These   8   are necessary because it is important to emphasize that
competition between individuals or groups is inevitable in a world of limited    9   , but conflict isn"t.
Conflict, nevertheless, is very likely to occur and is probably an essential and desirable element of human
societies.
Many authors have   10   their arguments that war cannot be avoided on the idea that in the struggle for existence among groups of animals, only those which are best   11  remain alive. In general, however, this
struggle in nature is competition, not conflict. Those who fail in this competition   12   starve to death or
are  13  by other types of animals. This struggle for existence is not similar to human war, but is like the
competition of   14   for jobs, markets, and materials. The most important quality of this struggle is the
15   for the necessities of life that are not enough to satisfy all.(     )1. A. considering

阅读理解。     What is eBay? The simple answer is that it is a global trading platform where nearly anyone can trade
practically anything. People can sell and buy all kinds of products and goods, including cars, movies and
DVDs, sporting goods, travel tickets, musical instruments, clothes and shoes- the list goes on and on.
The idea came from Peter Omidyar, who was born in Paris and moved to Washington when he was
still a child. At high school, he became very interested in computer programming and after graduating
from Tuft University in 1988, he worked for the next few years as a computer engineer. In his free time
he started eBay as a kind of hobby, at first offering the service free by word of mouth. By 1996 there
was so much traffic on the website that he had to upgrade and he began charging a fee to members.
Joined by a friend, Peter Skill, and in 1998 by his capable CEO, Meg Whitman, he has never looked
back
. Even in the great.com crashes of the late 1990s, eBay has gone from strength to strength. It is
now one of the ten most visited online shopping websites on the Internet.
EBay sells connections, not goods, putting buyer and seller into contact with each other. All you have
to do is make an e-photo, write a description, fill out a sales form and you are in business: the world is
your market place. Of course for each item sold eBay gets a percentage and that is great deal of money.
Every day there are more than sixteen million items listed on eBay and eighty percent of the items are
sold.1. We learn from the text that eBay provides people with_______.A. a way of buying and selling goods

A golf tournament (锦标赛) isn"t held every day and thus, as an organizer, you have to put on a
great show for those who wait for it.
     Preparations before the Tournament
An important thing you need to note down at this stage here is that once you start advertising an event,
the event has actually begun for the audience. At this stage, you need to decide what you are going to call
this event. You should make the name and the advertisement special, so that people will give them a
second look. Depending on your economic situation, you need to decide whether you want to hold this
event for amateurs or for experts. The next thing is to choose a proper place to hold the tournament.
Plan of Action during the Event
While the players are on court, you have to make sure that everything they might need is made
available to them. Since golf is a sport that is played in the open, guests should be given drinks from time
to time, preferably a drink of their choice. There should also be enough dustbins to keep the court clean.
The things the guests need, from extra equipment to drinks, should not be put off for any reason.
Announcement of some contests, lucky draws (抽奖) and prizes during the event will add to the
entertainment of the tournament.      Another one of the successful golf tournament ideas is an auction
(拍卖) of some particular things during the game. You can get some equipment signed from the players.
     Post Tournament Necessities
Now that the tournament is over, you need to keep a small after-party in the form of a dinner. During
this party, the guests can actually communicate with the players and congratulate those who won.
1. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. The event means more to the audience than to the players.

D. It"s important for the organizer to draw the audience"s attention.
2. The following are done before the tournament EXCEPT________.

D. advertising the tournament
3. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The guests" need should be met as soon as possible.
B. All the players and audience can attend lucky draws.
C. The auction can only sell the equipment of the players.
D. Only the players can attend the party after the tournament.
4. Why does the organizer announce the lucky draws and other activities?
A. To have fun himself.
B. To earn more money.
C. To please the audience.
D. To attract more players.
5. The passage is mainly written to ________.
A. introduce what a golf tournament is
B. call on people to join in golf tournaments

I love charity (慈善) shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of
them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to
electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you won"t find in the shops anymore. The thing
I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of
profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted
goods.
The first charity shop was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charity"s appeal to aid postwar
Greece had been so successful it had been flooded with donations (捐赠物). They decided do set up a
shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity
shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find
children"s books, all 10 or 20 pence each.
Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who
gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every morning you see
bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don"t encourage this, rather ask people
to bring things in when the shop is open.
The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work. Charity shops raise more than £100 million a year, funding (帮助) medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor children,
homeless and disabled people, and much more. What better place to spend your money? You get
something special for a very good price and a good moral sense. You provide funds to a good cause and
tread lightly on the environment.
1.The first charity shop in the UK was set up to        .
A. raise money for patients
B. help a foreign country
C. sell cheap products
D. deal with unwanted things
2. Which of the following is TRUE about charity shops?
A. 90% of the donations are second-hand.
B. They are open twenty-four hours a day.
C. The operating costs are very low.
D. The staff are usually well paid.
3. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A. Charity Shop: Where You Buy to Donate.
B. The Public"s Concem about Charity Shops.
C. What to Buy at Charity Shops.
D. Charity Shop: Its Origin & Development.
