is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the
same time.
In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to
communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be
shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起)
the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998.Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded
to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.
In Chicago, the mayor appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the
first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighborhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other
at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.
The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to
represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized
cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity can be achieved. Or it may show that New Yorkers
missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion
about a book itself.
Nancy points out that the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by
how many people are enriched by the process. or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they
would not otherwise have shared a word.

not know what we have been missing until it arrives.
It takes an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone. Giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they will love you back. Do not expect love in
return; but if it does not, be content it has grown in yours. Do not rely on one"s appearance; it can trick
you. Do not rely on wealth; even that fades away. Rely on someone who makes you smile, because it
takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.
There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your
dreams and hug them. Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to
be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.
The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You cannot go on well in life until you
let your past failures and heartaches go off. May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough
trails to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy. The
happiest of people do not necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything
that comes along their way. Happiness waits for those who cry, those appreciate the importance of
people who have touched their lives. Always put yourself in others" shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it
probably hurts the other person, too.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that
when you die, you are the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.
B. where to go with other persons
C. how to get on well with other persons
D. how to treat our life
B. If you give someone your love, you are sure to receive love in return.
C. It is wise not to rely on anybody because you are likely to be deceived.
D. If it takes you a short time to love someone, you will easily forget the person.
B. you shouldn"t do what will hurt other people
C. you should believe in other people
D. you should depend on your imagination
B. can live happily and forget the past
C. has made a lot of money for himself before he dies
D. does good for other people and is respected and loved by them
Heads nodded in agreement when he said, "High school English teachers are not doing their jobs." He
described the inadequacies of his students, all high school graduates who can use language only at a
grade 9 level.I was unable to determine from his answers to my questions how this grade 9 level had
been established.
My topic is not standards nor its decline. What the speaker was really saying is that he is no longer
young; he has been teaching for sixteen years, and is able to think and speak like a mature adult.
My point is that the frequent complaint of one generation about the one immediately following it is
inevitable. It is also human nature to look for the reasons for our dissatisfaction. Before English became
a school subject in the late nineteenth century, it was difficult to find the target of the blame for language
deficiencies (缺陷).But since then, English teachers have been under constant attack.
The complainers think they have hit upon an original idea. As their own command of the language
improves, they notice that young people do not have this same ability. Unaware that their own ability
has developed through the years, they assume the new generation of young people must be hopeless
in this respect. To the eyes and ears of sensitive adults, the language of the young always seems
inadequate.
Since this concern about the decline and fall of the English language is not perceived (察觉) as a
generational phenomenon but rather as something new and peculiar (特有的) to today"s young people,
it naturally follows that today"s English teachers cannot be doing their jobs. Otherwise, young people
would not commit offenses against the language.
B. the students had a poor command of English because they didn"t work hard enough
C. English teachers should be held responsible for the students" poor command of English
D. he was an excellent language teacher because he had been teaching English for sixteen years
B. gave a correct judgment of the English level of the students
C. was right in saying that English teachers were not doing their jobs
D. could think and speak intelligently
B. positive
C. compromising
D. critical
B. the author disagrees with the speaker over the standard of English at Grade 9 level
C. language improvement needs time and effort
D. language teaching is by no means an easy job
B. it is unfair to blame the English teachers for the language deficiencies of the students
C. to eliminate (消除) language deficiencies one must have sensitive eyes and ears
D. to improve the standard of English requires the effort of several generations
to be is what you should be like to your true friends. Trust, forgiveness, responsibility are some elements
of a true friendship. True friendships are hard to achieve. And what"s more, life is short. So treasure these
friends if you already have them. If you don"t continue to search, because once you have them, life will
become so much easier to live, no matter what happens. I have been through very difficult times and I
dare say, without my friends, I would not have made it.
Friendships need lots of energy and patience to maintain them. Not to mention time. When your friend
needs you, and when things are not going too well on your side, it is often so easy to turn a deaf ear to
their requests. It is especially during these times, that you must find the strength to help your friend. And it
is during these times that your friendship will be made stronger.
And you must always be happy for their successes, even when things are not going too well for you. It might be hard to do this, but it is something that you need to learn. Think about all the sacrifices your
friend has made for you and all the times when he was happy for you despite his own troubles. Think
abut all the happy times you enjoyed and the sad, difficult times you went through together. That should
give you plenty of patience to actually be a true friend. Remember, true friends are the next best thing to
family. They will always be your supporters.
B. A true friend
C. A happy time
D. Friend, a treasure
B. forgive your friends" mistakes
C. spend much money on friends
D. be helpful to your friends
B. friendships need lots of energy and patience
C. your friends need you to give more help to them
D. you should be always on your friends" side
B. take no measures to
C. have no means to
D. turn to a deaf for
B. most people in trouble are not happy about their friends" success
C. you should support your friends on any conditions
D. a true friend appears only when you have troubles
Fortunately, there are always things you can do to fix the situation and achieve success in your life. Here are some tips:
1) Forgive yourself
You may have made mistakes in the past, but you can learn from them. It"s true that you are not perfect, but neither is everybody else. It"s normal to make mistakes, so do yourself a favor by giving yourself forgiveness
2) Accept things you can"t change
There are some things you cannot change. So learn to accept them. You will feel much relieved if you treat things you can"t change the way they deserve: just accept them, smile, and move on.
3) Focus on your strengths
Instead of focusing on your weaknesses, focus on your strengths. You always have some strength which gives you a unique combination nobody else has. Recognize your strengths and build your life around them.
4) Write your success stories
Sometimes, we are so focused on what we don"t have that we forget about what we have. So write your success stories. They do not have to be big things; there are a lot of small but important achievements in our life.
5)Stop comparing yourself with others
You are unique. You can never be like other people, and neither can other people be like you. The way you measure your success is not determined by other people and what they achieve. Instead, it is determined by your own life purpose. You have everything you need to achieve your life purpose, so it"s useless to compare yourself with others.

four goals for people to reach a perfect life in their future.
The first goal common to all of us is health and energy. We all want to be healthy and fit, to have high
levels of energy and to live free of pain and illness. Today, with the incredible advance in medical science,
the quality of our health and fitness, and our lifespan is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer and better than people
who have poor health habits. Remember that health is not everything, but without health everything is
nothing!
The second goal that we all have in common is to enjoy excellent relationships-intimate, personal or
social-with the people we like and respect, and who in turn. Fully 85% of your happiness will be
determined by the quality of your relationships at each stage, and in each area, of your life. How well you
get along with people, and how much they like and respect you, have more impact on the quality of your
life than perhaps any other factor.
The third common goal is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. You want
to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and promoted(晋升)faster. You want to
earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage of your career, whatever you do.
The fourth goal we all have in common is to achieve financial independence. You want to reach the
point in life where you have enough money so that you never have any financial worries. You want to be
completely free of them. You want to be able to order dinner in a restaurant without referring to the price
listings to determine what you want to eat.
