Our first expression is "in the red." It is another way of saying that a business is losing money. In the
past, numbers in the financial records of a company were written in red ink to show a loss.
A business magazine recently published a report about a television company. The report said the
company was still in the red, but was able to cut its loss from the year before.
A profit by a business is written in black numbers. So a company that is "in the black" is making
money.
Another financial expression is "run on the bank." That is what happens when many people try to
withdraw all their money from a bank. A "run on the bank" usually happens when people believe there
is danger a bank may fail or close.
Newspaper reports about a banking crisis in Russia used that expression. They said the government
acted because of fears that the crisis would cause a run on the banks.
"Day trading" is a system that lets investors trade directly on an electronic market system. It was the
first completely computerized stock market. It sells stocks of companies not listed on any stock exchange. Many high technology companies are listed on it.
Day trading companies provide a desk and a computer system to an investor who wants to trade.
Individuals must provide fifty thousand dollars or more to the trading company to pay for the stocks they
buy. Thousands of other investors do day trading from computers in their homes.
A day trader watches stock prices carefully. When he sees a stock rise in price, he uses the computer
to buy shares of the stock. If the stock continues to rise in price in the next few minutes, the day trader
sells the shares quickly to make a small profit. Then he looks for another stock to buy. If a stock goes
down instead of up, he sells it and accepts the loss.
The idea is to make a small profit many times during the day. Day traders may buy and sell stocks
hundreds of times each day.

e-mail, the Internet and other things throughout the day? According to the survey made by a famous
university in the USA, most people have the experience.
"People often lose their concentration when they are bored, of course, but also when they are engaged
in challenging tasks," says Peter Bregman, the head of the survey. "They sometimes have a feeling to
escape from what"s difficult or boring, so they jump out," he says. The part of the brain devoted to
attention is connected to the brain"s emotional center. Any strong emotion -quarrels with colleagues,
roblems at home -can interrupt our attention. Studies over the last decade have shown that too much
work to do at a time can easily lead to distraction.
Refocusing is hard for many people. Robert Epstein suggests the following, "Stop and listen to some
soft music for a few minutes. Find a good friend or a teacher and say out your matter on your mind. Go
for a short walk or take a deep breath, where you breathe in deeply, count to five slowly, hold it and
breathe out very slowly." This can "blow out all the tension and the unwanted in your mind to restore your
focus."
Take more control by structuring your time and becoming more aware of your behaviors. "Setting the
phone alarm to go off every hour is my way of creating awareness," Mr. Bregman says. "You have to
inform yourself that you"ve lost focus in order to do something about it." Starting the day with a to-do list
is also important, such as when to eat, when to go to the gym or take a walk. But if it"s overly ambitious,
you will put yourself in a state of anxiety, which makes it hard for the brain to concentrate. "Choosing
three or four things as your priority (优先) for the day allows your brain to settle down and focus," he
says.

I am a very conservative woman. I don"t drink, dance, wear makeups or pants. I enjoy the company
of friends despite (尽管) our differences and thought they enjoyed mine.
On our most recent outing, however, they laughed at my religious jewelry, commented on my "lack of
fashion," and made me feel guilty for not wanting to stay out late.
Despite this, they are great friends and would help me at the drop of a hat. I don"t bring up their being
overweight, or that I think some of the clothes they wear are ugly. I don"t criticize them for sleeping around. I wish they would accept me for who I am.
I am considering not going out with them the next time they ask, but I don"t really want it to come to
that. Any suggestions?

Dear Old-Fashioned Girl,
Just this: It"s time for you to start cultivating relationships with people whose values are more like your own. 1.
Good communication is vital in modern society. We know that much of the communication is
unspoken. Consciously or unconsciously, we show our true feelings with our eyes, faces, bodies and
attitudes. Your good qualities can make good communication. The personal qualities include physical
appearance, energy, rate of speech, pitch and tone of voice, gestures, expressiveness of eyes, and the
ability to hold the interest of others. What should we do so that our communication will be effective?
Here are my suggestions.
2.
Firstly, the trick is to be consistently you, at your best. The most effective people never change
character from one situation to another. They"re the same whether they"re having a conversation with
their close friends, addressing their garden club or being interviewed for a job. They communicate with
their whole being.
3.
Secondly, whether you"re talking to one person or one hundred, always remember to look at them.
Don"t break eye contact while talking. As you enter a room, move your eyes comfortably, then look
directly at those in the room and smile. This shows clearly that you are at ease. Smiling is important. The
best type of smile and eye contact is gentle and comfortable, not forced.
4.
You should also absorb other people before showing yourself. You can"t learn anything when you
talk. When you attend a meeting, a party or an interview, don"t immediately start throwing your opinions.
Stop for a second. Absorb what"s going on. What"s the mood of the others - are they down, up, happy,
expectant? Are they eager to learn from you, or do they show resistance? If you can sense what"s
happening with others, you will be better able to reach them. So, listen before you talk.
5.
How do you get your energy up? Before the meeting, collect your thoughts about the goal of the
meeting - yours and the other"s. Once you go through the doorway, no longer think about yourself.
Focus on the person you are meeting to find out what he is interested in. Properly collected energy
comes across when we sincerely believe something. When you speak with energy, you are involved
with your audience and your message. You create an air of certainty. The audience may disagree with
you, but they can"t question your belief.
hockey players as he watched them play during the tryouts for the 1980 national team. He decided to

anxious. Over some of these, we have little or no control. On the other hand, there are steps we can take
to eliminate much of 1 . We might say, then, that survival in the information age is a challenging yet 2
task.
To some extent, we are all receivers and givers of information. Our brain, however, receives and
processes information in different ways. One way involves the amazing capacity of the brain to process
information subconsciously.
Another way involves 3 processing of information such as during conversation. We have a great
deal of control over this type of information processing -both as givers and receivers. If we indulge (任凭)
ourselves talking about tiny things or even harmful information, valuable time and 4 can be wasted.
Meanwhile this can make us and others anxious. You may lose opportunities to absorb and distribute
information that is truly useful for 5 in this troubled world.
Information gathered by reading is processed consciously and 6 takes longest. The written word is
still the most powerful way of 7 imagination and conveying information, ideas, and concept.
How can we 8 so much information from various sources, such as reading material, TV program,
computer games, and other 9 activities? The answer is screening. Screening, sorting out or prioritizing
what we need to hear, see, say or read may 10 much information anxiety.
To cut through confusing information, 11 this basic rule: Keep it simple! The secret to processing
information is narrowing your 12 of information. Simplicity is 13 in many Asian cultures and is even
recognized in Western cultures as a superior way of living. Writer Duane Elgin 14 , "To live more simply
is to live more purposefully and with a 15 of needless distraction."
