but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would
become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the
driver"s seat is another matter.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense. It takes the most cool-headed
drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the
other hand,a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and
fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an
atmosphere of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors
of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don"t even seem able to recognize
politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who
waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be
able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and
whenever they want to.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to
correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings.
Unfortunately, modern drivers can"t even learn to drive, let alone master the road man ship. ears
ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take
from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

not concentrated on your study. Who can you turn to if you are such an unlucky student? A great person

Add school counsellors to the list of people you can turn to when you need help. They know how to
listen and can help kids with life"s challenges(挑战). Counsellors have special training in how to help
kids solve problems, make decisions, and stand up for themselves. That doesn"t mean your counsellor

Your school counsellor is available for you and wants to make your school experience the best it can

When I was at primary school in the second grade, I used to follow my elder sister who is five
years older than me. She loved sports and was always playing basketball and softball. She was also
a runner and was good at it. She brought home some running awards, so I was motivated and started
running, too.
I started training at school and never missed even a day. Even if it was raining, I was training. At first
I was not very good; but as the years passed, I got better and better and started to win some competitions.
Breaking records
In 1994, I won the Mexican National Championships. Later, I won fourth place in the Pan-American
games that were held in Santiago de Chile. In 1996, I broke the Mexican record; and in 1997, I won
fourth place in the Central American Games. In 1997 and 1998, I again won the Mexican National
Championships and broke the Mexican records. Now I want to improve my personal record of 19
feet, 2 inches.
Plans for the future
I"m in Houston now, training with coach Tom Tellez at the University of Houston. He is the best
coach in the world. He also trained Carl Lewis, one of the best US athletes. I have the support of my
parents who always come with me to all my meets. I think that"s why I"m where I am. Next year
I have some very important competitions. One of them is in Canada in July 1999. I hope I do well.

is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here"s how.
Plan your time carefully.
When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After , you
should make a schedule of your time. First arrange your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then
decide a good, regular time for studying. Don"t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A
weekly schedule may not solve all the problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to
your time.
Find a good place to study.
Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply
a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios or TV! When you
sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class.
Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. Really listening in class means
lesswork later. Taking class notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly.
When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher
has mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material.
This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become
more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude towards the tests.
The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you to remember
your new knowledge. The world won"t end if you don"t pass a test, so don"t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many
others after you have tried these.
2.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?
Never let tests trouble you in your study.
3.Please fill in the blank in the third paragraph with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence.(Please answer within 10 words.)
4.Which suggestion do you think is the best for you ? Why?(Please answer within 30 words.)

are a few of the most important ones.
First, if you have ever seen someone flying a kite in a movie, you probably saw him or her get the kite
off the ground by running into the wind. However, this is not the way to launch a kite. Most beginners will
find a "high start" launch to be the easiest. For a high start launch, have a friend stand about one hundred
feet away, facing into the wind. Your friend should face you and hold the kite gently. Place some tension(拉力) on the flying line by pulling gently on the line. With a steady breeze behind you, tug gently on the
line, and the kite will rise.
If your kite begins to dive (俯冲), don"t panic or pull on the line. Dropping the reel (线轴) will cause it
to spin out of control, and could cause someone to be hurt. Simply let the line go slack (松弛的). This
usually will right the kite in midair.
For a kite that is pulling hard away from you, have a friend stand behind you and take up the slack line as you bring it in. Hand over hand, pull down the kite. It is very important to have gloves on to do this, or
you may burn or cut your hands. It is recommended (建议) that you always wear gloves while flying
kites.
When two kite lines get crossed, pulling may cause enough friction to cut one or both of the lines.
Instead of pulling, both fliers should walk towards one another until their lines uncross as they pass.
pass in different life problems and challenges. No one is free of life problems. Only a dead man
faces no problem. As long as you are alive, challenges are everywhere.
How do you face problems and challenges in your life? Problems and challenges are the building
blocks of your personality. They make you who you are. Besides, whether what happened in your
life builds or destructs you depends on how you look at it. If you take your problems as troubles,
they will be troubles and may cause destruction. If you take them as constructive tools, you are going
to be built up on them.
Problems are everywhere. No one can avoid them. And they are good too. They open up a
different look and opportunity if you are willing to see. When you face troubles, do not frustrate or
freak out. Just cool yourself to think in a different direction. Think in a positive way. Every problem
has its own good as well as bad sides. Focus on the good one. Look at the bright side.
Besides, there is always a good person, perhaps your mom or dad, or one of your friends, right
beside you who can turn everything into your best if you are willing to turn to them. No matter what
happens, they will be there to help you. Trust them and they will never let you down. All you need
to know is that you are loved wherever you are.
B. Stay calm.
C. Keep up.
D. Feel upset.
B. attitude is everything
C. challenges can be avoided

D. are not confident
