阅读理解。     Money spent on advertising is money spent as well as any I know of. It serves directly to assist
a rapid distribution of goods at reasonable prices, thereby establishing a firm home market and so
making it possible to provide for export at competitive prices. By drawing attention to new ideas it
helps enormously to raise standards of living. By helping to increase demand it ensures an increased
need of many services: Without advertisements your daily newspaper would cost four times as much,
the price of your television license would need to be doubled, and travel by bus or tube would cost
more.
And perhaps most important of all, advertising provides a guarantee of reasonable value in the
products and services you buy. Apart from the fact the twenty-seven Acts of Parliament govern the
terms of advertising,no regular advertiser dare promote a product that fails to live up to the promise
of his advertisements. He might fool some people for a little while through misleading advertising. He
will not do so for long, for mercifully the public has the good sense not to buy the inferior article more
than once. If you see an article consistently advertised, it is the surest proof I know that the article
does what is claimed for it, and that it represents good value.
Advertising does more for the material benefit of the community than any other force I can think
of.
There is one more point I feel I ought to touch on. Recently I heard a well-known television
personality declare that he was against advertising because it persuades rather than informs. He
was drawing excessively fine distinctions. Of course advertising seeks to persuade.
If its message were confined merely to information-and that in itself would be difficult if not
impossible to achieve, for even a detail such as the choice of the colour of a shirt is subtly
persuasive-advertising would be so boring that no one would pay any attention. But perhaps that is
what the well-known television personality wants.1.By the first sentence of the passage the author means that____.A. he is fairly familiar with the cost of advertising
B. everybody knows well that advertising is money consuming
C. advertising costs money like everything else
D. it is worthwhile to spend money on advertising2.In the passage, which of the following is NOT included in the advantages of advertising?A. Securing greater fame.
B. Providing more jobs.
C. Enhancing living standards.
D. Reducing newspaper cost. 3.The author thinks that the well-known TV personality is____.A. very precise in passing his judgment on advertising
B interested in nothing but the buyer"s attention
C. correct in telling the difference between persuasion and information
D. obviously partial in his views on advertising 4.In the author"s opinion,______.A. advertising can seldom bring material benefit to man by providing information
B. advertising informs people of new ideas rather than wins them over
C. there is nothing wrong with advertising in persuading the buyer
D. the buyer is not interested in getting information from an advertisement5.What attitude does the author hold for advertising?A. Negative.
B. Positive.
C. Ridiculous.
D. Not stated.

阅读理解       As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by
society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it"s not easy to
change later in life. Financial experts say that every one also has their own belief of how to manage their
money. According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are: the ant, the cricket
and the snail.
◆The ant - works first
Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don"t
care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy
life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks(股票) with low risk.
◆The cricket - fun first
The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn"t think too much about the future. They even
borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These
people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance(保险).
◆The snail - lives under pressure
The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans(贷款)
from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though
they are not sure they can afford it. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.1. One"s values may_____.A. be his ways of managing money
B. be his beliefs about society
C. determine his family and education
D. influence his behavior 2. Mr. Smith always enjoys spending a weekend with his friends, fishing, hunting and playing cards.
Moreover, he spends money in a very luxurious way. So, _____.A. Mr. Smith belongs to the ant type
B. Mr. Smith belongs to the cricket type
C. Mr. Smith belongs to the snail type
D. it"s hard to tell which kind of person Mr. Smith is3. The writer of the passage seems to be in favor of _____.A. the ant

阅读理解。     High-quality customer service is preached(宣扬) by many, but actually keeping customers happy is easier said than done.
Shoppers seldom complain to the manager or owner of retail store, but instead will alert their friends, relatives, co-workers, strangers and anyone who will listen.
Store managers are often the last to hear complaints, and often find out only when their regular customers decide to frequent their competitors, according to a study jointly conducted by Verde group and Wharton school.
"Storytelling hurts retailers and entertains consumers." Said Paula Courtney, president of the Verde group. "The store loses the customer, but the shopper must also find a replacement."
On average, every unhappy customer will complain to at least four other, and will no longer visit the specific store for every dissatisfied customer, a store will lose up to three more due to negative reviews. The
resulting "snowball effect" can be disastrous to retailers.
According to the research, shoppers who purchased clothing encountered the most problems. Ranked second and third were grocery and electronics customers.
The most common complaints include filled parking lots, cluttered(塞满了的) shelves, overloaded racks, out-of-stock items, long check-out lines, and rude salespeople.
During peak shopping hours, some retailers solved the parking problems by getting moonlighting local police to work as parking attendants. Some hired flag wavers to direct customers to empty peaking spaces. This guidance got rid of the need for customers to circle the parking lot endlessly, and avoided confrontation between those eyeing the same parking space.
Retailers can relieve the headaches by redesigning store layouts, pre-stocking sales items, hiring speedy and experienced cashiers, and having sales representatives on hand to answer questions. Most importantly, salespeople should be diplomatic and polite with angry customers.
"Retailers who"re responsive and friendly are more likely to smooth over issues than those who aren"t
so friendly." Said professor Stephen Hoch. "Maybe something as simple as a greeter at the store entrance would help."
Customers can also improve future shopping experiences by filing complaints to the retailer, instead of
complaining to the rest of the world. Retailers are hard-pressed to improve when they have no idea what is wrong.1. Why are store managers often the last to hear complaints?A. Few customers believe the service will be improved.
B. Customers would rather relate their unhappy experiences to people around them.
C. Customers have no easy access to store managers.
D. Most customers won"t bother to complain even if they have had unhappy experiences.2. Shop owners often hire moonlighting police as parking attendants so that hoppers         .A. can find their cars easily after shopping
B. won"t have trouble parking their cars
C. can stay longer browsing in the store
D. won"t have any worries about security3.What contributes most to smoothing over issues with customers?A. Design of the store layout.
B. Hiring of efficient employees.
C. Manners of the salespeople.
D. Huge supply of goods for sale.4.To achieve better shopping experiences, customers are advised to        .A. voice their dissatisfaction to store managers directly
B. shop around and make comparisons between stores
C. settle their disputes with stores in a diplomatic way
D. put pressure on stores to improve their service
