阅读理解。                                                      Prayer for My Mother
Dear God,
Now that I am no longer young, I have friends whose mothers have passed away.I have heard
these sons and daughters say they never fully appreciated their mothers until it was too late to tell
them.
I am blessed with the dear mother who is still alive.I appreciate her more each day. My mother
does not change, but I do.As I grow older and wiser, I realize what an extraordinary person she is.
How sad that I am unable to speak these words in her presence, but they flow easily from my pen.
How does a daughter begin to thank her mother for life itself? For the love, patience and just plain
hard work that go into raising a child? For running after a toddler (学步儿童), for understanding a
moody teenager, for tolerating a college student who knows everything? For waiting for the day when
a daughter realizes what her mother really is?
How does a grown woman thank for a mother for continuing to be a mother? For being ready
with advice when asked or remaining silent when it is most appreciated? For not saying:"! told you
so", when she could have voiced these words dozens of times? For being essentially herself-loving,
thoughtful, patient, and forgiving?
I don"t know how, dear God, except to bless her as richly as she deserves(应得) and to help me
live up to the example she has set.I pray that I will look as good in the eyes of my children as my
mother looks in mine

mall. "Why need a shopping mall if you have Taobao? I am a Taobaoer," says Shi, 28, a writer in
Beijing.
A growing number of Chinese Internet users like Shi have discovered the joys of online shopping.
The China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) announced in December that more than 87
million Chinese made purchases on the Internet in the first half year, which means one out of four

                                                   American Way of Life
Throughout their history, Americans have been people on the move. The early immigrants had
to travel to get to the New World. Once they arrived, they settled along the East Coast. But they
weren"t content to stay there.   1   Later, settlers moved west to develop these new areas. As a result
of this westward migration, Americans eventually occupied the whole continent from the Atlantic to
the Pacific. Even today, Americans seem unable to stay in one place. Research says that the average
American moves every five years.

work daily in long-distance places. __2__ Most companies provide an annual vacation for their
employees, and people often use that time to travel. Some people just visit friends or relatives in
distant states. Others go on low-budget weekend outings and stay in economy motels. Those with
more expensive tastes choose fancy resorts and hotels.   3   Some travel in vehicles to camp out in
comfort while others "rough it" by sleeping in tents.
4   Why? For one thing, it"s cheaper than traveling abroad and there"s no language problem.
Besides, America offers plenty of tourist attractions. _5_ Nature lovers can enjoy beaches, mountains,
canyons, lakes and a wealth of natural wonders. As it is, the convenience of modern freeways, railways
and airplanes makes travel in America as easy as pie.

by climbing to the summit(山顶) of Pacaya for a close-up view. There are guided tours
every day up thishighly active volcano from Antigua. Giving travelers a chance to see
Mother Nature at her most powerful.
Pacaya is an easy drive from Antigua,a beautiful city with many colorful houses along its
old streets that are turned into art-works during its Holy Week festival. No matter when
you come to Antigua, you won"t miss the Pacaya-tour companies.
But climbing Pacaya is no easy job : it is 2,560metreshigh, and reaching the summit
takes two to three hours of seemingly one-step-forward and two-step-back movements.
As you climb, you hear the dull sounds of eruptions high above. Steaming, hot remains
from recent eruptions begin to line the path as you near the active summit :the
McKenney Cone (火山锥). Just as though you were going to walk over to the edge of the
cone , the road turns to the left and up to the relative safety of the old, inactive summit.
Many tours are timed so that you arrive at the cone of the volcano in plenty of time
for sunset and the full contrast between the erupting red lava(熔岩)and the daikening sky.
On a good day the view from the summit is extremely exciting. The active mouth boils ,
sending red lava over its sides, and once in a while shoots hot streams up t0 100 metres
into the air. There is a strong bad smell in the air even if you take care to be upwind of the
cone. As evening turns deeper into the night, the burning lava quietly falls down the side
of the volcano. For you , too , it is time to get down.1. What is the main purpose of this passage?_____A. To attract tourists to Pacaya.
B. rro describe the beauty of Pacaya.

D. see a path lined with remains of earlier eruptions4. Many tours are timed for people to ________.A. get down the mountain in time when night falls
B. avoid the smell from the upwind direction of the cone
C. enjoy the fantastic eruption against the darkening sky
D. appreciate the scenery of the 2 ,560-metre-high mountain

How can you help kids cope with (应对) stress? Proper rest and good nutrition can boost coping
skills, so can good parenting. Make time for your kids each day. Whether they need to talk or just be
in the same room with you, make yourself available.
Even as kids get older, quality time is important. It’s really hard for some people to come home after
work, get down on the floor, and play with their kids or just talk to them about their day - especially if
they’ve had a stressful day themselves. But expressing interest in you kids shows that they’ve important
to you.
Help your child cope with stress by talking about what may be causing it. Together, you can come up
with a few solutions. For example, he should cut back on after-school activities, spending more time
talking with parents or teachers, developing an exercise plan or keeping a journal.
You can also help by predicting potentially stressful situations and preparing kids for them. For
example, let a child know ahead of time (but not too far ahead of time) that a doctor’s appointment is
coming up and talk about what will happen there. Keep in mind, though, that younger kids probably
won’t need too much advance preparation. Too much information can cause more stress.
Remember that some level of stress is normal; let kids know that it’s OK to feel angry, scared,
lonely, or anxious and that other people share those feelings.
When kids can’t or won’t discuss these issues, try talking about your own concerns. This shows
that you’re willing to handle tough topics and are available to talk with when they’re ready. If a child
shows symptoms (症状) that concern you and is unwilling to talk, consult a counselor or other mental
health experts.
Most parents have the skills to deal with their children’s stress. The time to seek professional attention
is when any change in behavior persists, when stress is causing serious anxiety, or when the behavior is
causing significant problems in functioning at school or at home.

1. What is the purpose of the text?A. To share the author’s ideas on proper parenting.
B. To persuade parents to spend more time with kids.
C. To advise parents how to help kids deal with stress.
D. To seek different ways to help solve kids’ problems.2. What makes it difficult for parents to spare quality time for kids?A. Kids growing so fast.
B. Parents being tired out.
C. Kids losing interest in parents.
D. There being too much homework.3. You are advised not to talk too much about a stressful situation in advance because _______.A. it does no good to your kids
B. it doesn’t work in practice
C. your kinds may lose interest
D. your kids don’t want to listen4. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?A. Normal people share the same feelings.
B. It is normal for kids to have some stress.
C. Kids should get rid of the negative feelings.
D. Everybody feels angry, scared, lonely or anxious.

阅读理解     Small discoveries in Indonesia are causing a stir(轰动 )  in the science world. Researchers have
unearthed (挖掘)  tiny bones that they believe belong to an entirely new human species. If that" s true,
it will change how we think about our ancestors.
Clues that the little people may have lived long ago were first revealed last year in the scientific joumal Nature. Scientists said that they had found the bones of a three-foot-tall female on the island of Flores,in
Indonesia. When they looked more closely, they saw that the nearly complete skeleton(骨骼) belonged
to a full-grown adult. Researchers named her Hobbit, after the tiny heroes of the Lord of the Rings books.
Now the team is saying it has unearthed even more pieces of the puzzle, including a jawbone  and
parts  of arms , legs  and  hands  from several individuals , as well as stone tools. They reported their find
in Nature this month. " The new evidence makes it very clear that these people are a new species, distinct
from modem humans," Peter Brown, a scientist on the team, said. They named these ancient humans
Homo floresiensis.
Brown says that these little people lived as recently as 12,000 years ago. If Homo floresiensis was a
different species from modern humans, that would make our family tree bigger than we knew. It means ,
says Brown ,that  " until recently , a relative shared  the planet
with us. "
Many scientists think a new species is unlikely. Some argue that the bones must have belonged to
modern humans whose small size was the result of a genetic problem.
Daniel  E.   Lieberman , a scientist  at  Harvard  University, thinks that the debate over the discovery
is healthy. He believes that the questions and arguments raised by critics will help us learn more about
these unusual skeletons. " Disagreement is an important part of the scientific process" , Lieberman said.
" As far as I"m concerned, the story"s only just begun. "1. Researchers name the skeleton Hobbit because_________.  A. it proves to be a full-grown adult
B. it belongs to an ancient human species
C. it resembles the tiny heroes in a set of book
D. it is a figure described in the Lord of the Rings2. Small discoveries in Indonesia are important because__________.   A. they are about ancestors of modern humans
B. they are revealed in the scientific journal Nature
C. they are made by Peter Brown,a famous scientist
D. they might provide new evidence for human study3. According to Daniel E. Lieberman_____________.   A. the investigation hasn"t begun yet
B. disagreement leads to further research
C. Homo floresiensis doesn"t exist on earth
D. our family tree is bigger than we knew4. What does the underlined word " a relative"  in Paragraph 4 refer to?   A. Another human species.
B. The little people in fictions.
C. Our ancestors like monkeys.
D. One of Peter Brown"s relatives.5. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?  A. History of Indonesian People
B. Arguments Over Human Origin
C. Comparison Between Different Peoples
D. Discovery of a Possible New Human Species
