Being on bad terms with your neighbors can make your life frustrating day after day. But taking the
time to establish a good relationship with your neighbors has a good many benefits. The community will
be friendlier, the neighborhood safer, and the area a nicer place to live in. "There are some suggestions to
develop a good relationship with your neighbors.
Whether you"re new in the neighborhood or new residents who have just moved into your block,
introduce yourself. Say hello, offer a welcoming gift and share or ask about the local area.
Sometimes, you can remedy (补救) problems before they even start; for example, if you do a lot of yard work, let them know in advance and mention that if it"s getting too loud, they shouldn"t hesitate to let you
know.
Be aware of the shared walls, if you and your neighbors share adjacent (相邻的) living spaces. and
try to put noisy household appliances such as washing machines and tumble dryers away from the shared walls.
Keep your pet dog on a leash (皮带) if it has a habit of running rampant on your neighbors" lawns,
especially if they have a pet cat or a pet dog of their own, and ensure to clean up after it.
When you park your vehicle, be sure not to block anyone"s access, or make them have to pull out of
a very tight spot. Don"t slam (砰地关上) your car doors late at night.
Weed your garden in a regular way, because the presence of weeds in your yard is not only unsightly
but can also spread to your neighbor"s yard.
Really good neighbors watch out for each other. They offer to help, especially on matters that impact
the larger neighborhood and look for opportunities to communicate. Great neighbors make for great
neighborhoods.

There are many rights to make sure that people will be treated fairly when they are suspected
or accused of a crime. Sometimes these rights are called "due process of law". In using these rights,
a person should have the help of a lawyer.
You have a right to protect against unreasonable searches and seizures. The police generally
may not search you or your home, or take things you own, without a "warrant". A warrant is a
paper which states, very exactly , the place to be searched and the things to be taken. Sometimes,
however, the police will not need a warrant to search you or your property. If an officer sees you
committing a crime, or if he has a good reason to believe you have committed a serious crime, he
may arrest you and search you and the area right around you without a warrant.
If you invite a police without a warrant to come into your house and he finds proof of crime,
the evidence may be used against you in court. If you do not want an officer to search you or your
home and he does not have a warrant, tell him that you do not give him the right to search. However,
if the officer will not listen, do not try to stop him. It is dangerous to resist and it may be illegal to do
so. Any evidence which a policeman gets during an unlawful search and seizure cannot be used against
you.
Police officers must act reasonably and fairly at all times. They should use physical force only when
it is needed to arrest someone to enforce a law. They may not use physical violence to "teach someone
a lesson".

1.According to the passage, a "warrant" is______.
A. an identification card
B. an access card
C. an official written order
D. a special license
2.In which case can the policeman use the evidence he gets against you in court?
A. He makes an unreasonable search of your home and gets the evidence.
B. He is allowed to search your home with no warrant and finds proof of crime.
C. He gets the information you do not want to give him by using physical force.
D. He obtains the information from you when you are alone with him
3. The police can use physical force only when____.
A. they want to teach the habitual thief a lesson
B. they catch the criminal on the spot
C. the suspect talks back
D. the criminal resists arrest
4. The passage centers around____.
A. the rights of citizens
B. the importance of warrants
C. the duty of the police
D. criminal cases

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start
using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would
think of questioning this fact.   1   When someone says that he has a good memory, he really
means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or
unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does
not give it enough opportunity to become strong.  2   . One of them exercises his arms and legs
by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motor car all day.
If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us
that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky,
and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault as if it was his arms or legs that were weak.
3  . But all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory
by the same means  practice.
Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than
those who can?  4   . Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things.
They cannot write them down in a little notebook and they have to remember dates, time and prices,
names, songs and stories, so their memory is the whole time being exercised.
  5  .
A. What do you think of it?
B. Yet many people do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way.
C. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever.
D. So if you want a good memory, practice remembering.
E. Someone else says that he is poor in health.
F. Why is this?
G. The position is exactly the same as that of two people.

I used to be tile messiest person alive. Over the years, through watching others and by trial and error,
I have finally found ways to come up with plans, organize them and follow through with them.
Make an outline of everything you need to have and do to make your plan happen. Make a list of
all of the steps that need to be accomplished and think about what needs to be done.
Detail everything thoroughly and read over it so you can start coming up with some mental solutions
of how to carry out your plans.
You should ensure that if for some reason way one doesn"t work, you have way two and way three to
lean back on. Therefore, different ways are needed at hand. It"s just a matter of being organized.
Chances are that there is always more than one way of doing things, and chances are that if one of
those ways doesn"t work, one of the other ones will.
Committing yourself to finishing at least part if not all of your plan at once is also necessary. It will
show that you not only have initiative to get things rolling, but that you are interested in the results
obtained with making the move to get everything done.
If you make a commitment to finish before a specific time, make sure that you carry that out, and be
sure to do everything in the way you said you would, within the time-frame you set for yourself.
Don"t try to tackle more things all at a time. All that does is delay your progress, distract you and
make you lose your interest, motivation and energy.
Carrying out an effective plan requires being as organized as possible. You will only achieve this by
sticking to the order of the plan and not deviating or trying to do more at a time.
Last but not the least, you should never abandon things mid-project. It will only annoy everyone
around you including yourself. Unfinished plans are a waste of time, energy and, in some cases, even
money.
So, don"t be afraid of organization. The older we get, the more necessary it becomes to have the skills
necessary to follow through with confidence and to be able to carry through plans in an organized and
manageable way. It pays to be organized, after all.

A "blogger" is a person who writes on an Internet computer Web site called a "blog". The word "blog"
is a short way of saying web log, or personal Web site. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.
There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas to many
people who read them. They contain links to other Web sites. And they provide a place for people to
write their ideas and react to the ideas of others.
A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3,000 Web logs. It says that blogs are
most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives.
The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.
However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the
Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs.
And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.
At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer
closed his free blog service, weblogs.com. He says the site became too costly to continue. He started the
blog four years ago, and thousands of people had written on it.
One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca"s Pocket. It involves much useful information for
readers. Rebecca Blood created the Web site in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site.
That article led to a book called "The Weblog Handbook". It has been translated into four languages so
far.
Ms Blood says Rebecca"s Pocket gets about 30,000 visitors a month. She writes about anything and
everything-politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how
to prevent people from stealing money from online bank accounts.
