by living in the country where it is spoken. __1__ Fortunately, many aspects of a country"s culture have made their way to our lives in the form of various media and entertainment outlets. Not only do they allow a peek at life, but they make excellent study material for learning the language.
What to increase your language skills and enjoy some entertainment at the same time? Tired of going

In white shirt, blue pants, black cloth shoes and two pigtails, Jingqiu gives off an air of great "
pure beauty" in Zhang Yimou"s new movie Under the Hawthorn Tree, which tells the story of
the sad romance of Jingqiu and a handsome young man named Laosan set at the end of
the "cultural revolution" (1966-- 1976).
Before it was released, moviegoers foresaw what this "pure beauty" could be. Director
Zhang complained of how long it had taken him to find the right girl for the part of Jingqiu
a character so innocent. She believes that simply lying on the same bed as a man will make
her pregnant.
It was 18-year-old Zhou Dongyu who stood out from the crowd. According to Zhang,
Zhou has "eyes that are clear like a fountain on a mountainside". Born to an ordinary worker"s
family, the Shijiazhuang girl was in her final year of high school and working hard for a place in
an art college.
"If you have fair skin and clear eyes, as Jingqiu does, it is easy to look pure. Girls today
wear so many jewels and make-up--that"s the reason Zhang was not interested," said Du Yanlai
, 17, of Chengdu.
While some teenagers consider such "pure" beauty illusory, others believe that it speaks of
something soulful.
Purity is all about an innocence that shines through from within, thinks 16-year-old Tan Mengxi
of Nanjing. "Being pure can be simple, not having complicated thoughts and being inexperienced.
However, it doesn"t mean an ignorant or native person. So, a person is pure in his or her nature if
he or she is always enthusiastic and able to deal with difficult matters independently. This purity
doesn"t pass with time, "she said.

C. What makes a pure girl
D. Why Chinese girls want to be pure
very functional and sometimes the only source of light in a room. There are many types of lamps,
and of course they come in many styles and colors to fit anyone"s home. Lamps can be soft and
inviting or bright and useful. Floor lamps are often tall, thinly shaped lamps that bring light to a large
area by cupping the bottom of the bulbs and forcing light up. Table lamps tend to force the light
down and out to lighten up a smaller, more private space. But, that doesn"t mean that you can"t
find a lamp that fits your needs as well as your tastes. In fact, you can even have lamps made to
order to match your desired look.
But, before you decide to make that decision, check out the lamps in department stores and
specialty stores. While most home improvement stores offer a wide variety of floor lamps, hanging
lamps, and table lamps, you can find an even larger selection in a lighting store. There you will be at
a loss about all the different choices you have. There will be choices in every style imaginable. If you
still can"t find what you are looking for, check contents and even the Internet. Specialty stores
nationwide will ship lamps and accessories (配件) to you.
Adding some extra light to your home may have been your early search when trying to find a
lamp, but you will soon see that there is more to look for in a lamp. The design will fit your home
and the color should match your home. The details on the lamp or lamp shade can even be found
to match your furniture, tables, or other items in your home. Finding a great lamp is a fun adventure
into the world of lighting.

want regardless of what the other person wants. Since the potential issue has not been removed,
it will simply reappear later. Here are the necessary steps to effectively get rid of conflicts at work.
★ Realize that some conflicts are unavoidable at work. On numerous occasions, conflict
and disagreement are likely to happen. But when a conflict happens it"s not the end of the world.
On the contrary, it can be the beginning of an interesting learning process. Conflicts mean that
people care enough to disagree strongly. The trick is not to allow the conflict to go on forever.
★ Handle conflicts sooner rather than later. Solve a conflict when it starts, as it only gets
worse with time going by. Conflicts at work arise not from something that was said, but from
something that wasn"t said! Everyone"s waiting for the other to admit he"s wrong and gets more
unpleasant after the conflict has lasted a while. It"s essential to interrupt the "waiting game" before
it gets to that point.
★ Ask nicely. If somebody has done something that made you angry, or if you don"t understand
their viewpoint or actions, simply asking nicely about it can make a world of difference. Never
assume that people do what they do to annoy or hurt you. Sometimes there"s a good reason why
that person does what he or she does, and a potential conflict disappear right there. Do remember
to make an inquiry, not an accusation of any sort.
★ Appreciate. Praise the other part in the conflict. Tell them why it"s worth it to you to solve the
conflict. This can be difficult as few people find it easy to praise and appreciate a person they
disagree strongly with, but it"s a great way to move forward.
Although there are many ways in which people communicate through speech, public speaking
has probably received more study and attracted more attention than any other. Politicians winning
an election, salespeople presenting products and etc. All depend upon this form of public
communication. Even people who do not make speaking a part of their daily work are often asked
to make public speeches: students at graduation, for instance, or members of churches, clubs or
other organizations. Nearly everyone speaks in public at some time or other, and those who perform
the task well often become leaders.
There are many reasons for speaking in public. A public speaker may hope to teach an audience
about new ideas, or provide information about some topic. Creating a good feeling or entertaining
an audience may be another purpose. Public speakers, however, most often seek to persuade an
audience to accept new opinions, to take certain actions, or to see the world in a new way.
Public speakers usually know well in advance when they are scheduled to make a speech.
Consequently, they are able to prepare their message before they deliver it. Sometimes, though,
speakers must deliver the message unprepared, or off the cuff, such as when they are asked to
speak at a wedding reception or to participate in an interview.
When they do not have to speak unprepared, most speakers write their own speeches. Politicians
and business managers sometimes employ professional writers who prepare their speeches for them.
These professional writers may work alone or in small teams. Although the speaker may have some
ideas into the contents of the speech, the writers sometimes have a great influence over the opinions
expressed by their employers. Regardless of how a speech is prepared, the person who delivers it is
given credit for its effect upon its hearers.
B. most of them have been audience of such activities
C. most of them have to do it when they study at college
D. the passage does not mention the reason
B. To persuade the audience to accept an idea.
C. To enjoy the satisfaction from one"s own speech.
D. To develop public interest.
B. know very well whom the speaker is
C. know whose idea the speech really expresses
D. believe it expresses the speaker"s idea
Most drinks stating that they are fruitflavored (水果味道的) contain no fruit at all, while most
of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food
Commission.
"Shoppers need to check the labels (标签) before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual
content can be nonexistent," said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove. "Food production
is highly competitive. __1__ It will increase profits, and consumers won"t always realize they are
being tricked."
Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables,
or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Researchers analyzed the
contents of 28 strawberryflavored products sold in stores. __2__ Of the 11 products that did
contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice
box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.
__3__ Let"s take jam as an example. Some strawberryflavored jam was labeled as containing
no artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all.
__4__ Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought. Under current
UK law, food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. "Describing
a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the packet with pictures of strawberries is
misleading. __5__ Unfortunately, it is also legal and widespread," Tokelove said. "It"s time to take
measures to protect the consumers" rights."
B. Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.
C. They found that about 60 percent of them didn"t contain any fruit at all.
D. If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.
E. It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products.
F. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at all.
G. The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on the packaging.
