When first entered, Vanak Restaurant does not look like much of a restaurant, but once the pleasant
smells of kabob(烤肉串)hit the senses, you are incapable of calling it anything less.
Owned by a local couple, this Persian restaurant has an inviting, homelike atmosphere that many
restaurants lack.
The space is small with only a few dining tables and nearly no decoration, but the environment is truly
charming.
Lying in a hardly noticeable street corner, the restaurant still attracts all customers, especially those
experienced in the delights of Middle Eastern cooking.
A common sight is that of old Persian men sitting in the corner talking loudly about world topics,
watching news events on TV,drinking a black tea known as Persian chai, and reading local Persian
newspapers all the while trying to finish off their plates piled with food.
The variety of food at the restaurant is limited, but the amount of each dish is fairly large. Most of the
meals can serve two people and are under $10,so not only is it affordable but practical as well.
The food especially appeals to healthconscious eaters because each dish is very healthy, made with
limited fat and oil and served straight off the grill (烤肉架).
The main dish that the restaurant is popular for is its kabobs, which are different styles of grilled meat.
One delicious and extremely healthy dish is the Joojeh Kabob, which is made of grilled chicken pieces
served with either rice or bread.Another great kabob is the Chelo Kabob, a kabob consisting of grilled
beef.

be overlooked.

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词.
注意:每个空格只填1 个单词.
When we think of leadership, we often think of strength and power. But what are these really and
how do they operate?
Leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. Even if this is possible, it is shortterm, and
tends to backfire( 产生事与愿违的后果). If you order someone to do something against their will, they may do it because they feel they must, but the anger they feel will do more harm in the longterm. They will also experience fear.
Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or her best.
If they associate you with this emotion of fear, they will become less functional around you, and you will
have succeeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a very good employee or
partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place in leadership.
The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and our understanding and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, which may be part of the work day or we can
employ them at the emotional level, so they became fully devoted to the projects and provide some of
their own motivations. Today"s work place is all about relationships. Anyone works harder in a positive
environment in which they"re recognized and valued as a human being as well as a worker. Everyone
produces just a bit more for someone they like. Leaders understand the way things work. They know the
paycheck is not the single most motivating factor in the work life of most people.
The true strength of leadership is an inner strength that comes from the confidence of emotional
intelligence-knowing your own emotions, and how to handle them, and those of others. Developing your
emotional intelligence is the single best thing you can do if you want to develop your relationships with
people around you, which is the key to the leadership skills.

What does it mean to say that we live in a world of persuasion? It means that we live among
competing interests.Your roommate"s need to study for an exam may take priority(优先) over pizza.
Your instructor may have good reasons not to change your grade. And the object of your romantic
interest may have other options.
In such a world, persuasion is the art of getting others to give fair and favorable consideration to our
point of view. When we persuade, we want to influence how others believe and behave. We may not
always prevail-other points of view may be more persuasive, depending on the listener, the situation, and
the merit of the case. But when we practice the art of persuasion, we try to ensure that our position
receives the attention it deserves.
Some people, however, object to the very idea of persuasion. They may regard it as an unwelcome
interruption into their lives. Just the opposite, we believe that persuasion is unavoidable-to live is to
persuade. Persuasion may be ethical(合乎道义的) or unethical, selfless or selfish, inspiring or
degrading. Ethical persuasion, however, calls for sound reasoning and is sensitive to the feelings and
needs of listeners. Such persuasion can help us apply the wisdom of the past to the decisions we now
must make.
Therefore, the most basic part of education is learning to resist the one kind of persuasion and to
encourage and practise the other.
Beyond its personal importance to us, persuasion is indispensable to society. The right to persuade
and be persuaded is the bedrock of the American political system, guaranteed by the First Amendment
to the Constitution(美国宪法).

A. how people persuade
B. why people persuade

[1]Although the beginning of thc school year may be an exciting time for many students, others may
be anxious about entering a new classroom. Fortunately, there are several steps parerlt can take to
help ease their children"s anxiety about the upcoming school year:
[2]Communicate to your child that you care. Children who know their parents care about their
experiences at school are more likely to seek guidance from their parents about challenging situations
they encounter at the beginning of school and throughout the year.
[3] Try not to overreact. Transirions may be difficult, and it is important to reassure children that the
first few days of the school year are often challenging but their new class room will soon become familiar.
[4] Be calm and positive. Children are often able to detect their parents" emotions,so it is helpful to
model calmness and positivity.
[5] Work with your child to develop coping strategies. Providing your child with a few strategies for
managing tricky situations [e. g. what to do if called a mean name by a peer(同龄人)] may help them
deal with the challenges. However,if problems petsist,it is important to communicate with school
personnel.
[6]      . Although it is not always possible, volunteering at your child"s school allows you to observe
the environment firsthand and to meet school personnel. Your involvement in school also shows children
how family and school are connected.
[7]Helping your child experience a positive start to the school year is important as the transition back to
school affects children"s attitudes, confidence, and academic and social performance. If your child
continues to be anxious about school or faces major obstacles, consider contacting your child"s school.
Teachers and school counselors can offer additional support to your child as he or she transitions to life
in a new classroom.
