granted, we often don"t clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number
of people, __1__
Moreover, a great many relationships come under the general term "friendship". In all cases, two
people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of closeness between
them and the reasons for their interest in each other change greatly.
At the beginning, much depends on how people meet, and on good first impressions. As we get to
know people, __2__Although these factors are not of the greatest importance, it is more difficult to
have a good relationship with people when there is a big difference in age and background.
Then, __3__Friends will stand closer together and will spend more time looking at each other than
ordinary friends. Smiles and soft voices also express friendliness, and it is because they may give the
wrong signals that shy people often have difficulty making friends. A friendly look with a wrong facial
expression can turn into an unfriendly stare, and nervousness may be wrongly understood as
unfriendliness.
Some relationships are a result of argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have
the same ideas and beliefs, the same opinion and interests. The more closely involved people become,
the more they depend on each other. And __4__ Equally, friends have to learn to make allowances for
each other, to put up with annoying habits, and to accept differences in opinion.
In contrast with marriage, __5__But the support and understanding that results from shared
experiences and affections does seem to create a close and lasting relationship.
A. we are usually friends with only a few.
B. many factors can affect friendship and relationship.
C. people want to do friends favors and hate to let them down.
D. argument and discussion can improve personal relationships.
E. we consider things like age, race, looks, economic and social status, etc.
F. we pay attention to actual behavior, facial expression, and the way a person speaks.
G. there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the relationship between two people.

have 6montholds in music classes and swimming classes. Parents fear that if other children are attending
these classes, they will be holding their own children back if they do not enroll, too.
The other extreme, simply taking a_laissezfaire_approach and letting children do-or refuse to
do-whatever they want, is not the answer either, of course.
Dr. Taylor emphasizes that parents need to push their children based on what is best for children, not
what is best for themselves. If children understand that an activity is in their best interests, then they will
accept it, he finds.
Dr. Taylor and other family experts remain pessimistic about the possibilities for widespread social
change. "The force of our popular culture, driven by money and superficial(表面上的)values, cannot
be resisted," he says. But change can take place at a "microlevel", in families and schools.
When change does occur, the rewards can benefit everyone in the family. One mother supporting this
new approach toward parenting mentions the advantages her family experienced after her children cut
back on activities. "The biggest thing is that since we have done this, we are rested," she says. "Not only
are our kids rested, because they"re not in a ton of stuff, but my husband and I are rested, because we"re
not driving them everywhere. We weren"t living in the moment when we were always busy. We were
living by the schedule. The return on our investment of spending time together has been enormous."
B. are too busy to take care of their children
C. don"t want their children to lag behind
D. want to repeat what their parents did to them
B. controlling children in a flexible way
C. developing a keen interest in children
D. letting children do whatever they want
B. to consider the matter from parents" standpoint
C. to emphasize the importance of hard work from time to time
D. to make it interesting and enjoyable to them
B. going from one extreme of pushing children too hard to the other of leaving them alone
C. involving children in activities that will probably contribute to their development
D. enrolling them in classes that are best for children
B. resisting the superficial values of pop culture
C. reducing more activities off their school schedule
D. spending more time with their children
and different relationships between their classmates,I choose to focus on my school lessons
and sports.
When I was young,my mother encouraged me to develop and keep friendship with boys
in order to build strong relationships. But she told me not to risk a good friendship with a boy
with the title of boyfriend. It"s indeed a wise choice to stay friends with those of the opposite
sex.In my opinion, even though some high school relationships might continue after graduation,
the probability of them lasting much longer is so slim that there really is not a point to it.
Firstly you have to think about such a question-whetherit is possible to hurt both of you,
or even hurt both of your future husbands or wives. My second point is that you still can date if
you hope marriage could possibly follow.Except this, there really is not any other reason for
dating. Some students desire relationships for a chance to be romantic. While these are nice to
have, there are many more important things at this point in our lives.
The titles of boyfriend and girlfriend put too much stress on a relationship between high
school students.Just staying as common friends may be the best choice for us.I strongly
recommend we should deal with it in an appropriate way and follow our teachers" advice
if necessary.

you feel when you see the glass? Will you describe your feeling as happiness or as pleasure? I believe
you will say it is a feeling of pleasure. There is a connection between these two kinds of feelings, and
sometimes one causes the other, but they are not the same. Pleasure is more dependent on the five
senses while happiness is independent of them.
When you are happy, little unpleasant events usually do not disturb you. When you are unhappy, you
feel as if everything is against you. You may compensate_for it by eating chocolate and sweets because
this gives you pleasure, yet you stay unhappy. A person may smoke cigarettes because it gives him
pleasure, yet this does not make him happier, especially if he knows the fact that it is not good for his
health.
The physical world is always in a changing state. At each moment a new thing is being created,
changed, transformed and then destroyed. This is the normal state of things and no one can change it.
If we stay still in a certain state, we are sure to experience unhappiness sooner or later. On the other
hand, if we adjust to the environment, nothing can influence our moods. Then outer events have nothing
to do with our inner joy of mind.
The room of the mind is filled with worry or fear. If you are free of thinking about them, the room has been emptied, and then you will see what is happening and experience it. When your mind stays quiet, you will see that happiness comes from the inside.
B. to let out your anger for
C. to provide with a balancing effect for
D. to solve the problems for
B. You eat chocolate and sweets when you feel as if everything is against you.
C. Smoke cigarettes even though you know the fact that it is not good for your health.
D. You are free from worry or fear when your mind stays quiet.
B. pleasure sometimes arouses happiness
C. you feel happy when nothing around you changes in a certain state
D. you feel unhappy because you have to adjust to the environment
B. Happiness Changes Us
C. Happiness Is Within Us
D. Stay a Quiet Mind
a simple flat in St Petersburg, coexisting on her £ 30amonth pension, because he has been
unemployed for many years.
The Sunday Telegraph tracked down the strange recluse(隐士) who shocked the maths world
when he solved a centuryold puzzle known as the Poincar? Conjecture.
Grigory Perelman"s trouble comes from a split with a leading Russian mathematical institute, the
Steklov, in 2003. When the Institute in St Petersburg failed to reelect him as a member, Dr Perelman
was left feeling an "absolutely ungifted and untalented person", said a friend. He became unconfident
and cut himself off.
Other friends say he cannot afford to travel to the International Mathematical Union"s congress in
Madrid, where many people want him to receive the maths equivalent(等价物) of the Nobel Prize, and
that he is too modest to ask anyone to pay for his trip.
Interviewed in St Petersburg, Dr Perelman insisted that he was unworthy of all the attention, and
was uninterested in the prize. "I do not think anything that I say can be of the slightest public interest,"
he said. "I am not saying that because I value my privacy, or that I am doing anything I want to hide.
There are no topsecret projects going on here. I just believe the public has no interest in me."
He continued: "I know that selfpromotion happens a lot and if people want to do that, good luck to
them, but I do not regard it as a positive thing. I realized this a long time ago and nobody is going to
change my mind. Newspapers should be more discerning(有洞察力的) over who they write about.
They should have more taste. As far as I am concerned, I can"t offer anything for their readers."
Dr Perelman has some small savings from his time as a lecturer, but is apparently unwilling to increase
them with the D$1 million offered by the Clay Mathematics Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts,
for solving one of the world"s seven "Millennium Problems".
B. his mother has a million dollars
C. he has been out of work for a long time
D. he is badly paid at the mathematical institute

C. he couldn"t afford to travel to Madrid
D. he showed no interest in it
B. has a strong personality
