阅读理解     Age plays a major part in people who are infected with cold, ie, in people who suffer from cold
infection. A study done by University of Michigan, has shown information that seems to be true for the
general population. Babies are the most cold infected group, generally more than six colds in their first
year. Boys have more colds than girls up to the age of three. After three, girls are easier to get infected
with cold than boys, and teenage girls get three colds a year to boys" two. The general cold infections
continue to get less into adults. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds
every year. One interesting thing is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show
a rise in cold infection, because people in this age group are most likely to have young children.
The study has also found that economy plays an important role as well. With more and more income,
the frequency at which colds are reported in the family is getting lower and lower. Families with the lowest
income usually suffer about a third ally forces people to live in rooms more crowded than rooms owned
by richer people, and the crowding usually leads to more chances for the cold virus to travel from person
to person. Low income may also have an effect on our diet. Many scientists believe that a poorer diet
usually leads into more possibilities of cold infection.1. Which of the age groups has the highest frequency of cold infection?A. Small babies.
B. Teenage boys.
C. Adult women.
D. Elderly people.2. The purpose of writing this passage is to________.A. give the readers some tips to avoid cold infection

B. People who have lower income enjoy living in crowded rooms.
C. Rich families can have better nutrition and never get infected.
D. People with higher income have fewer chances of infection.4. From the passage we can infer that________.A. age is the only important factor that connects with colds

阅读理解     The first weeks were a bit hard.Loneliness wasn"t the problem-I was in constant contact with clients
by email and phone. But I did feel claustrophobic (患幽闭恐怖症的). With wheels on my desk chair
and the refrigerator just two feet away,I could work for twelve straight hours without ever standing up.
There was no physical separation between my living room and work table,so the only way I found to feel
like I was going "home" at the end of the day was to forbid my use of the working chair. At ninethirty at
night, when I turned my computer off,I felt a bit like the family dog reaching the high point of its day,
"Whoohoo!I get to go for a walk!" Then, around eleventhirty,I"d find myself turning on the computer again
to solve some work issue that was preoccupying me...
At the same time,I discovered that working this way had definite advantages. Not only did I save an
hour from going to work and back home,I also gained a great deal of control over my time. There were
fewer interruptions than in an office,I could schedule meetings and phone calls in blocks to increase the
productive time around them, and the easy access to my workspace late at night and on weekends could
obviously be of mixed effects. This was especially important to me since,in addition to consulting work,I
was writing fiction and planning a new business.Working at home allowed me to manage all of these
activities at once without losing significant sleep. This turned out to be well worth the claustrophobia,
which also faded as I became more used to the new routine.A short walk in the late afternoon could
reduce the shutin feeling and make me get energetic again to work through the evening.
You might think that, with all this added time flexibility,I would even find a few hours to clean my
apartment,but,unfortunately,this never happened.

A. It was convenient for her.
B. It had advantages and disadvantages.

A. She didn"t like it very much.
B. She enjoyed doing her work.

Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and animals possess,if they
are properly used.If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play it until their hands were burnt
away.Similarly,if pain existed but fear did not,a child would burn itself again and again, because fear
would not warn the child to keep away from the fire that had burnt him or her before.A really fearless
soldier-and some do exist-is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no
use to his army.Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which men and animals might soon die
out.
In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If,for example, you never go
out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car,you
are letting fear rule you too much.Even in your house you are not absolutely safe:a plane may crash on
your house,or ants may eat away some of the wood in your roof, and they later may fall on you,or you
may get cancer!
The important thing is not to let fear rule you,but instead to use fear as your servant and guide.Fear
will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.
In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a
car coming straight towards you; fear warns you,you jump out of the way,and all is OK.
In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For
example, you cannot prevent a plane from crashing into your house, and you may not want to go and live
in a desert where there are no plants. In this case, fear has given you its warning; you have examined it
and decided on your course of action,so fear of this particular danger is no longer of any use to you,and
you have to try to overcome it.

1. Children would play with fire until their hands were burnt away if________.

A. they were given no warning beforehand
B. they didn"t have any sense of pain at all
C. they had never burnt themselves
D. they felt afraid of the fire

2. A really fearless soldier________.

A. is of a little use to his army
B. is not afraid of battles at all
C. is nothing but a dead soldier
D. is easy to get killed in a battle

3. People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding dangers because________.

A. they are warned of the danger and take quick action
B. they are quick both in mind and in action
C. they are calm in face of danger
D. they have gained much experience

4.  It is implied but not stated that________.

A. fear is always something helpful
B. too much fear is harmful
C. fear should be used as a servant and guide
D. fear is something strange and particular

A British train station has put up a no kissing sign to stop lovers going full steam ahead with their
overamorous farewells.
Commuters have been told:if you want to get up to that kind of business,do it in the car park.
The sign has been put up at the dropoff point (落客处) at Warrington Bank Quay station in the town

You may picture firefighters holding a hose (水管) outside of a burning building, but the Golden Eagles   Hotshots don"t fight fires quite that way. When they go into action, you may not even see a fire truck.
The Hotshots are firefighters who battle fires in wilderness areas. But don"t think you"ll only find them in
their home state California.Wherever there is a national wildfire emergency, the Golden Eagles Hotshots
could be there.
But these firefighters don"t work the same way as firefighters in a big city. They work in areas where
there are large numbers of trees, bushes, and grass. They climb up and down steep hills to clear brush and
burnable debris (残骸). They sometimes use water, but they often fight fire with fire!
They do that by lighting what are called "backfires",which are small, controlled fires that burn up fuel in
the path of larger wildfires. That way, when the Wildfire gets there,it has nothing to burn and nowhere to
go,because all the burnable fuel has already gone up in smoke.
The Hotshots also clear away fuel using oldfashioned hard work. For example, they use a saw to cut
away trees and heavy brush that could catch fire.
Of course there are times when the Golden Eagles Hotshots do have trucks to supply water to the
fires.  But the water is limited, and these guys have to rely on hard work more than anything.Physical
fitness is very important. They have to be in great physical shape to handle steep hills and difficult terrain (地形) while carrying a 60-pound pack.

have been saved, many houses have not burned, and countless trees are still standing.

A. do much of their work in California
B. avoid climbing steep hills in their work
C. do their work equipped with advanced tools
D. carry out their work mostly in forests and mountains

2. According to the passage, why do the firefighters light "backfires"?

A. To signal for help.
B. To remove obstacles.
C. To protect trees and bushes.
D. To prevent the fire from spreading.

3. What can we learn about the Golden Eagles Hotshots ?

A. They are firefighters working in big cities.
