“ Are you too stupid to do anything right?”These words—said by a woman to a little boy who was obviously her son—were spoken 21 he had walked away from her. They boy returned, his eyes down-cast. Not a 22 moment, perhaps, 23 small moments sometimes last a very long time. And a few words—though they mean 24 at the time to the people who say them—can have great 25 . I recently heard a story from a man named Malcolm Dalkoff. For the last 24 years he has been a professional 26 .Here is what he told me: As a boy in Rock Island, Dalkoff was terribly 27 .He had few 28 and no self-confidence.One day, his English teacher, Ruth Brach, gave the class an assignment(作业).The students had been reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Now they were to write their own chapter that would 29 the last chapter of the novel. Dalkoff wrote his chapter and turned it 30 .Today he can not recall anything 31 about the chapter he wrote, or what 32 Mrs.Branch gave him. What he does remember is the four words Mrs.Brach wrote in margin(空白处)of the paper:“This is 33 writing.” Four words. They 34 his life. “ 35 I read those words, I had no idea of who I was or 36 I was going to be.”he said.“After reading her note, I went home and wrote a short story, something I had always been 37 of doing but never believed I could do.” Over the rest of that year in school, he wrote many short stories and always brought them to school for Mrs.Brach to evaluate. She was 38 , tough and honest.“She was just what I 39 .”Dalkoff said. His confidence 40 .Dalkoff believes that none of this would have happened if that woman had not written those four words in the margin of his paper.

It has been difficult to sit on the bench the majority of my high school basketball career,to watch my team from the sideline and 36 why I am not good enough to be on the floor. 37 endless hours of work and devotion, pushing myself through drill after drill, the 38 thing I want is to be a cheerleader. The feeling of being 39 is sometimes too much and drives me to 40 on the spot. I often feel as though my efforts are wasted and my time is eaten away, devoted to 41 . It is heartbreaking to be a spectator(旁观者) for the game I love, knowing that no one has enough 42 to give me the chance to 43 on the floor. Tears well up, but I hold them back. I shouldn’t be so 44 over something so silly. Away from the game, it’s easier to put my thoughts together, 45 letting my emotions drive my reasoning. I consider 46 I am where I am. I have played football my whole life. I have a passion for the 47 and always have. There is nothing like the excitement of 48 : the swish of the net, the sweat rolling off my cheeks, even the bruises(青肿) are battle wounds worn 49 after every game. Even if I don’t play much, I participate in every 50 . I am part of a team of girls who 51 together like a family. I am there for them, 52 they are for me. Should I move on? Or should I stay with my team and pursue my passion just a little longer? The decision isn’t difficult when I consider the 53 that being a part of a team brings me --- and not just any team, 54 my team. I love basketball and my teammates. When I think about that, my view from the bench really isn’t so bad 55 .

What is the hottest topic at your school recently? In Hangzhou Yongjin Middle School, it’s money. The school held an activity called “making money” last weekend. About 200 students of Senior 1 and Senior 2 were divided into 30 teams. They went out to make money by selling things. What did they choose to sell? Some sold newspapers; some chose bottled water; some sold environmentally friendly shopping bags and bamboo(竹子) baskets. Hu Qing’s team decided to sell some useful books in front of the Children Activity Center. They thought parents would like to buy the books for their children. But unfortunately, they met urban management officers (城管). The officers asked them to leave. “We played hide-and-seek (捉迷藏) with the officers for the whole morning” said Hu. “Finally we had to give up.” Wang Bing and her team sold ice cream in a square. They didn’t meet any officers. But few people were interested in what they were selling. The team then put up a board saying “For Country Kids”. It worked. More people came to their stall (小摊). A foreigner even gave them 100 yuan. “He didn’t want any change. He said he wanted to help the children,” said Wang. “We were touched.” Later that day they gave the 100 yuan and more to the “Project Hope” office. Meng Zhaoxiang and his team were luckier. They sold all their cakes in four hours, spending 39.5 yuan and getting back 80 yuan. They made 40.5 yuan. “It was not easy to make the money,” said Meng. “Some people just looked. Others just tasted but didn’t buy. Now I know how hard it is for our parents to make money.” 86. 小题1:In Hangzhou Yongjin Middle School, what the students talk more about is ________.A.the officers | B.the kind foreigner | C.the activity called “making money” | D.the money they made last weekend | 87. 小题2:________ took part in the activity.A.All the students | B.Some teachers | C.About 200 students of the three grades | D.Part of Junior 1 and Junior 2 students | 88. 小题3: Hu Qing’s team finally gave up because ________.A.the parents didn’t like to buy the books | B.the Children Activity Center was too crowded | C.the officers didn’t allow them to sell anything there | D.the team played the game of the hide-and-seek the whole morning | 89. 小题4:Why did more people come to Wang Bing’s stall at last?A.The team put up a magic board. | B.A foreigner came up and helped them. | C.The people liked to help country kids. | D.The people were interested in their ice cream. | 90. 小题5: According to the passage the students learn ________.A.it’s impossible for them to make money | B.it’s not easy for their parents to make money | C.it’s very important for them to make a living | D.it’s necessary for school to hold more activities in the future |

“Birds are not as loyal to their partners as you might think, with divorce, child abandonment and remarriage a common part of birds’ life,” a new book has shown. Author and biology professor Bridge Stutchbury, dispels the love-bird belief that birds pair up for life. “In terms of the top 10 beliefs about birds, the lasting pair bonds that we think about, do occur in some birds, but in most of the little songbirds that we studied, no,” the professor from York University in Toronto said. The divorce rate among greater flamingos is 99 percent. Stutchbury’s book, The Private Lives of Birds, based on 20 years of research from radio filming and DNA testing shows male Acadian flycatchers fertilize(使受孕) females far away from their home nests, “ The main discovery is that so many birds do divorce for what humans would describe as selfish reasons,” Professor Stutchbury said. She noted that females may seek out males that are more colorful and better singers, or look to “step up in the world” and move to areas that are safer and have more food. “Females are looking for the highest quality male so that their children will be of high quality,” she added. Professor Stutchbury said shorter summers may drive females to leave their nests before their young are fully grown up so they can quickly find new mates(配偶) and lay more eggs, leaving the males to feed the hungry chicks on their own. Males can double their success in producing children by fertilizing neighboring females, but only “mates” care for the young, and some are none the wiser. “ They can’t tell when the egg comes out and whether it’s theirs or not,” She said. “They have no way to know.” Divorce is surprisingly common among birds, and most live with one partner for only a few months or years. Divorce rates range from 99 percent in the greater flamingo to zero in the wandering albatross(信天翁). 小题1:What does the underline word “dispels” mean?A.States | B.Doubts | C.Confirms | D.Removes | 小题2:The book The Private Lives of Birds_____.A.shows the kind of male birds females seek out. | B.indicates the wandering albatross is the most faithful. | C.is based on Professor Stutchbury’s 20 years’ research. | D.suggests that female birds select males near their home. | 小题3:According to the passage, we can infer that________.A.young birds’ quality depends on their feather. | B.some male birds care for others’ young as their own. | C.female birds go to find males as soon as autumn comes. | D.female birds are responsible for feeding the hungry babies. | 小题4: What is the passage mainly about?A.A book about love-birds. | B.Birds’ living habits and love life | C.The fact that birds don’t love their mates forever. | D.The factors that influence birds to look for another mate. |

Sitting is art that isn’t getting passed along. People these days feel as though they have to be doing something. If they are not working, they are jogging, or playing tennis or golf, or taking courses to improve their minds or bodies –or they are parked in front of the TV. Sitting in front of the TV isn’t sitting – it’s watching. People used to sit a lot. You would walk down the street or drive down the road, and there they would be, out on the doorsteps, sitting. You could go down to the store and sit on the bench out front in the summer or around the fire in the winter. There were sitting benches out in the town square. At the garage, there were straight-backed chairs. There among the oilcans and tries and spare parts, you could kick back and sit. Houses used to have sitting rooms, where the grown ups would go after Sunday dinner. Mom and Dad, Grandpa and Aunt Ruby would sit and digest (消化) the fried chicken and talk about Aunt Ethel’s illness, and how well the minister did today. Outside, the children would play, and the afternoon would pass by in a comfortable haze (悠闲的氛围). That sort of thing looks like doing nothing. A recharging battery (正在充电的电池) doesn’t look as if it’s doing anything either. Sitting restores your soul if you want to enjoy a truly full life, don’t just do something –sit there. 小题1:What message does the author try to get through to us ? A.People should make better use of their sitting room. | B.People should spend less time watching TV. | C.People should pass down their good habits. | D.People should take things easy for their own good. | 小题2:We can learn from the second paragraph that _____________ A.people lived a more restful life in the past | B.towns were built to make living convenient | C.small town garages had a lot to offer | D.people enjoyed going out for a drive | 小题3:The sitting room mentioned in the text used to be a place for______________.A.eating food . | B.watching TV . | C.gathering together. | D.playing with children. | 小题4: From the text we know the writer believes_______________A.sitting has a good spiritual effect | B.sitting helps people remember the past | C.sitting rooms may have different purposes | D.a sitting room is important for the old. |

Dear Alice, You really have two different questions here, so we’ll discuss them one at a time. Your problems at school may be a result of a number of things . You don’t say much about how these classmates get along with each other. It’s possible that all the students are feeling a little cautious(谨慎的) in the first term. It’s also possible that the others are unkind. If this is so, you have to find out why you are the class “outsider”. In your letter you say you often offer to help others with their work. Is it possible that your classmates don’t understand your offers? Could it seem that you were trying to “ buy” friends with these offers? Is it possible that you took no notice of your classmates when you had your good friends near you ? They may have felt hurt at that time. It may take a time for them to believe in you if so. Try to ask one classmate directly what the problem is. If you hear a negative answer, at least you’ll know what to do. Yours truly, Shelia 小题1:From the letter we know that Alice was very _______.A.lucky | B.unkind | C.clever | D.unhappy | 小题2: From the letter, we can conclude that ______.A.Alice wasn’t pleased with her teachers . | B.Alice’s parents made her study too hard. | C.Alice didn’t get along well with her classmates | D.Alice didn’t want to go to school any more | 小题3:Which of the following is NOT true according to the letter?A.Alice felt her classmates weren’t kind to her. | B.Alice was very warm-hearted to help her classmates | C.Alice didn’t want to get along well with her classmates. | D.Alice asked two questions in her letter |
