The bored teenagers of Gaochun are impatient with the leisurely pace of hometown life. For them there
is no nightlife to speak of, no bright lights, no excitement and they cannot wait to grow up and leave for the
urban attractions of the big cities. But it is this laid-back lifestyle that has attracted international attention. At
least, a quiet village within Gaochun county has come under the spotlight. Yaxi village, population 20,000, is
about to be designated China"s first "slow city" by Cittaslow, the sustainable lifestyle movement that first
surfaced in Italy 11 years ago.
At home, the residents at Yaxi are unfazed and pretty much unimpressed by the honor. To them, life has
been like this for as long as they can remember. Here, growing old gracefully is natural.
Nobody living in this little county had heard of Cittaslow or the words "slow city" before this.
"The first time I heard the term was last July, when the vice- president of Cittaslow, Angelo Vassallo,
visited Yaxi village," says Zuo Niansheng, the chief editor of local newspaper Gaochun Today.
"Vassallo was deeply impressed by this village"s natural and cultural resources and said it perfectly fitted
the requirements for a slow city," says Zuo. That was how Yaxi became connected with Cittaslow.
The Slow City must also be committed to protect and maintain the natural environment as well as promote
a sustainable way of development, all of which are the current strategies adopted in Gaochun. "We"ve been
doing this for years," adds Zuo.
Cittaslow was founded in Tuscany, ltaly in 1999. It was a spin- off from the Slow Food Movement which
started, also in Italy, in 1986 as a protest against the first McDonald"s opening near the Spanish Steps in Rome.
The movement championed a return to healthy, nutritious home-grown, home-cooked foods.
Slow Food has expanded globally to more than 130 countries. Its mission has also broadened to include the
promotion of sustainable foods and local small businesses, and the localization as opposed to globalization of
food production.
Cittaslow is an expansion of the Slow Food Movement, and it actively advocates a lifestyle that is
sustainable, and that will improve quality of life, mid will preserve cultural and culinary (烹饪的) heritage.

a medicine. Today, chocolate can be a hot drink, a frozen dessert, or just a snack. Sometimes it is an
ingredient in the main course of a meal. Mexicans make a hot chocolate sauce called mole and pour it over
chicken. The Mexicans also eat chocolate with spices like chili peppers.
Chocolate is a product of the tropical cacao tree. The beans taste so bitter that even the monkeys say
"Ugh!" and run away. Workers must first dry and then roast the beans. This removes the bitter taste.
The word "chocolate" comes from a Mayan word. The Mayas were an ancient people who once lived
in Mexico. They valued the cacao tree. Some used the beans for money, while others crushed them to make
a drink.
When the Spaniards came to Mexico in the sixteenth century, they started drinking cacao too. Because
the drink was strong and bitter, they thought it was a medicine. No one had the idea of adding sugar. The
Spaniards took some beans back to Europe and opened cafes. Wealthy people drank cacao and said it was
good for the digestion.
In the 1800s, the owner of a chocolate factory in England discovered that sugar removed the bitter taste
of cacao. It quickly became a cheap and popular drink. Soon afterwards, a factory made the first solid block
of sweetened chocolate. Later on, another factory mixed milk and chocolate together. People liked the taste
of milk chocolate even better.
Besides the chocolate candy bar, one of the most popular American snacks is the chocolate chip cookie.
Favorite desserts are chocolate cream pie and of course an ice cream sundae with hot fudge sauce.

Victor Hugo. I have just finished this book.
Reflecting on the content of the book, I am most impressed by the architecture of that time, like the
churches that represented power and luxury (奢华). It shows how great architects" appreciation of beauty
and their capacity of turning their dreams into buildings are.
When it comes to the heroine Esmerelda, I am deeply impressed by her beauty and kindness. I love her
not only for her fascinating appearance but also because of her good mind and pitiful destiny. We can see
her pure beauty from how she treats the goat, how she saves the jobless poet, and how she sacrifices for
love. In my eyes, she is a lost angel in the world. However, all this perfect girl has received is to lead a
vagrant (漂泊的) life. She lives in a slum (贫民窟) and is often made fun of by the so-called upper class
of society. She is abandoned and threatened. In the end, Esmerelda sadly makes the decision to end her life.
Different lifestyles are displayed in the novel, like foolish Phoebus and the ugly hunchback (驼背)
Quasimodo. A striking comparison is demonstrated (展示, 证明) between Phoebus and Quasimodo. They
both fall in love with the gypsy (吉普赛人) girl at the same time and both are refused. Their love is so
strong and sincere, while one wants to conquer and the other chooses to sacrifice.
I think that may be the real charm of the famous novel. It tells not only a sad story, but also reveals
human beings" pursuits (追求) of love and happiness. However, not every one receives the same treatment
in search of their love and happiness. What should we do when we are faced up with the darkness and
unfairness of society? Everyone has different answers, as the characters in the novel do.
B. The architecture was built with advanced building technology.
C. The churches represented power and luxury.
D. Esmerelda is so beautiful and friendly that the writer is deeply struck.
B. Admiring and sympathetic.
C. Disappointed and upset.
D. Regretful and sad.
B. Charming Esmerelda
C. Notre-Dame de Paris
D. Different lifestyles in the novel
or want. When they work, they usually get paid in money. Most of the money today is made of metal or paper.
2.____ one of the first kinds of money was shells.
Shells were not the only things used as money. In China, cloth and knives were used. In the Philippine
Islands, rice was used as money for a long time. Elephant tusks, monkey tails and salt were used as money in
parts of Africa. The first metal coins were made in China. They were round and had a square hole in the centre.
3.____
Different countries have used different metals and designs for their money. 4.____ Sweden and Russia used
copper (铜) to make their money. Later some countries began to make coins of gold and silver.
But even gold and silver were inconvenient if you had to buy something expensive. Again the Chinese
thought of a way to improve money. 5.____ The first paper money looked more like a note from one person to
another than the paper money used today. Money has had an interesting history from the days of shell money
until today.
B. But people used to use all kinds of things as money.
C. No one knows for certain when people began to use money.
D. People strung (串联) them together and carried them from place to place.
E. Money, as we know, is all made of paper.
F. They began to use paper money.
G. Today anyone will accept money in exchange for goods and services.

Viti Lev-Great Fiji-is the largest island. Here you"ll find the capital Suva and the international airport at
Nadi Vatoa, on the other hand, is a tiny island in the farthest part of Hiji. Then there are 331 other islands,

their practices in different cultures. They understand the importance of avoiding business decisions based on
misconceptions-mistaken ideas.
One cause of misconceptions is ethnocentrism, the belief that one"s own culture"s way of doing things is
better than the way of other cultures. It"s ethnocentrism that leads to failure in international business. To avoid
ethnocentrism, it"s necessary to study the different elements (组成部分) of culture: language, values and
attitudes, and customs and manners.
Language
A knowledge of the local language can help international business people in four ways. First, people can
communicate directly. Second, people are usually more open in their communication with someone who speaks
their language. Third, an understanding of the language allows people to infer meanings that are not said
directly. Finally, knowing the language helps people to understand the culture better.
Values are people"s basic beliefs about the difference between right and wrong, good and bad. An attitude
is a way of thinking or acting. Values and attitudes influence international business. For example, many people
in the United States believe that chocolate from Switzerland is better than chocolate from other countries, and
they buy a lot of it.
Customs and manners
Customs are common social practices. Manners are ways of acting that the society believes are polite. For
example, in the United States, it is the custom to have salad (色拉) before the main course at dinner, not after.
It"s not acceptable to talk with food in mouth at table. Failure to understand the customs and manners of other
countries will bring difficulty selling their products. Orange juice as a breakfast drink of an American company
in France doesn"t sell well because the French don"t usually drink juice with breakfast.
B. to communicate without outside help
C. to express their thoughts indirectly
D. to have a better idea of their own culture
B. values
C. attitudes
D. customs
B. Basic Beliefs in Business
C. International Business Culture
D. Successful International Business
B. how to avoid misunderstandings in business
C. how to use a local language in business
D. how to act politely and properly in business
