time is catching up with the Mona Lisa.
The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1505,is getting worse
by the year, according to the Louvre Museum where it is housed.
"The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape since
experts checked it two years ago," the museum said. Visitors have noticedchanges but
repairing the world"s most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not sure about the materials
the Italian artist used and their current chemical state.
Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every
year, many attracted by the mystery of her smile. "It is very interestingthat when you"re not
looking at her, she seems, to be smiling, andthen you look at herand she stops, "said Professor
Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University . "It"s because direct vision is excellent at picking
updetail, but less suitedto looking at shadows. Da Vinci paintedthe smile in shadows. "
However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as my stcrious as the smile. DaVinci
himself loved it so much that he always carriedit with him, until it was even-tually soldto France"s
King Francis Ⅰ in 1519.
In 1911,the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a former employee, who took it out of the
museum hidden under his coat. He said he plannedto return it to Italy. The painting was sent
back toFrance two years later. During World War Ⅱ,French hidthe painting in small towns to
keep it out of the hands ofGerman forces.

of the great performers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were born and brought up in
Russia and Eastern Europe. I asked Isaac Stern, one of the world"s greatest violinists, the reason
for this phenomenon."It is very clear," he told me. "They were all Jews (犹太人) and Jews at
the time were severely oppressed and ill-treated in that part of the world. They were not allowed
into the professional fields, but they were allowed to achieve excellence on a concert stage."
As a result, every Jewish parent"s dream was to have a child in the music school because it was
a passport to the West.
Another element in the emergence of prodigies, I found, is a society that values excellence
in a certain field and is able to nurture (培育) talent. Nowadays, the most nurturing societies
seem to be in the Far East. "In Japan, a most competitive society with stronger discipline than
ours,"says Isaac Stern,"children are ready to test their limits every day in many fields, including
music. When Western music came to Japan after World War II, that music not only became
part of their daily lives, but it became a discipline as well." The Koreans and Chinese, as we
know, are just as highly motivated as the Japanese.
That"s a good thing, because even prodigies must work hard. Next to hard work, biological
inheritance plays an important role in the making of a prodigy. J. S. Bach, for example, was the
top of several generations of musicians, and four of his sons had significant careers in music.

day that store ledgers(分类账)move into the black and companies become profitable. On that day,
retailers slash(砍) prices to get consumers to buy. It is also a time when many Americans start their
Christmas shopping. VOA"s Elizabeth Lee tells us how the economy may affect consumers on that
bargain day.
This day should be a shopper"s dream. "It"s just the deals, the sales and everything you can get for
a lesser price," said Sandy Thomas, a shopper. But it"s a nightmare for others. "I think it"s crazy. I"ve
done all of my shopping throughout the week so I don"t have to go out on Friday," she said. It"s called
Black Friday, the start of the traditional Christmas shopping season in the United States. Every year it"s
the day after the Thanksgiving holiday. Stores open before sunrise and there are deep discounts
everywhere you look.
Last year a crowd of bargain-hunters killed a Wal-mart worker in a New York suburb. This year,
many stores are increasing security while they slash prices. "This is a huge time for the retail stores,"
said Fred Joutz from George Washington University. "This is when they begin making their profits for
the year."
Economics professor Fred Joutz says how Americans spend the weekend after Thanksgiving is a
good indication of how consumers feel about the future.
With the unemployment rate above 10 percent, Joutz says Americans are saving more and spending
less. Some retailers are attracting consumers by opening on Thanksgiving Day, when shops are
traditionally closed. Other stores open their doors anywhere from midnight to four in the morning.
And shoppers will be lining up in front of the doors in order to be one of the first ones to walk
through and get a big discount. Electronics like flat screen TVs are usually the first items to go. Sandy
Thomas says it"s an annual family tradition and well worth it. "I just save maybe half of what I would
have spent on a regular, you know, shopping trip," she said.
Economists say U.S. consumers will spend money this Black Friday, but they will spend it more
carefully.

B. a travel brochure
C. an economic research report
D. a book on psychology

sensation(轰动) for its description of the destructive effects of the Great Depression(大萧条) of the
1930s. By the end of April, it was selling 2,500 copies a day-a remarkable number considering the
hard economic times. In May, the novel was a number-one best-seller, selling at a rate of 10,000
copies a week. By the end of 1939, close to a half million copies had been sold.
John Steinbeck was shocked by the tremendous response to his novel. Almost overnight, he found
himself involved in a great national debate over the migrant labor problem. Many people were shocked
by the poverty and hopelessness of the story, and others denied that such circumstances could happen in
America. Even people who had never read a book before bought a copy of The Grapes of Wrath. At $2.75 per copy, it was affordable and quickly sold out.
However it was banned and burned in Buffalo, New York; East Saint Louis, Illinois; and Kern
County, California, where much of the novel is set. In fact, the novel remains one of the most frequently
banned books in the United States. The book was criticized sharply in Congress by Representative Lyle
Boren of Oklahoma, who called the novel"s description of migrant living conditions a lie. Charges were
made that "obscenity"(淫秽) had been included in the book in large part to sell more copies. Eventually,
First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt stepped in to praise the book and defend Steinbeck against his critics. In
1940, the novel won the Pulitzer Prize.
The popularity of the novel has endured(持久). It is estimated that it has sold fifteen million copies
since its publication. For almost sixty years, Steinbeck"s novel has been a classic in American literature;
it has been translated into several languages, including French, German, and Japanese. The Grapes of
Wrath has also been a necessary part of the school curriculum in America since the end of World War II.

C. It has won many important prizes in America.
D. It survives the time and remains a classic.
The Diary of a Young Girl is a book based on the writings from a diary written by Anne Frank
while she was in hiding for two years with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.
Anne Frank began to keep a diary on her thirteenth birthday, 12 June 1942, three weeks before
going into hiding with her mother Edith, father Otto sister Margot and four other people. With the
assistance of a group of Otto Frank "s trusted colleagues they remained hidden for two years and one
month. They were arrested in 1944 and sent to separate Nazi concentration camps. Anne Frank finally
died of typhus(斑疹伤寒) in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp shortly (about two weeks) before
liberation by British
troops in April 1945. Of the group of eight, only Otto Frank, Anne"s father, survived the war. After the
war, he got back the diary that was saved and kept by his friend.
When Otto Frank read his daughter"s diary, he was astonished. "I never knew my little Anne was so
deep". Anne Frank"s story has become an example of Jewish suffering under Adolf Hitler, and a warning
of the consequences of racism and persecution(迫害).
There has been guess about the identity of Kitty, who in Anne"s revised diary is the only receiver of
her letters. It was once thought that the name referred to Kitty Egyedi, a prewar friend of Frank"s.
However, Kitty Egyedi said in an interview that she was flattered by the assumption but doubted the
diary was addressed to her: "Kitty became so idealized and started to lead her own life in the diary.
The name ... is not meant to be me."
The character"s fictional(虚构的) origin was proved undoubtedly later. Anne had expressed the
desire in the introduction of her diary for one person that she could call her truest friend, that is, a person
to whom she could confide her deepest thoughts and feelings. She observed that she had many "friends",
but (by her own definition) no true, dear friend with whom she could share her innermost thoughts.
In fact, the closest friend Anne had during her tragically short life was her diary, "Kitty", for it was only to "Kitty" that she entrusted her innermost thoughts.

C. Anne was arrested in August 1944
D. Anne died shortly after her 16th birthday
B. Anne kept on writing the diary in the hiding place and the camp.
C. British troops liberated Nazi concentration camps and saved Otto.
D. Anne and her mother and sister died in the Bergen-Belsen camp.
B. Kitty Egyedi could share her deepest thoughts.
C. she didn"t trust her family and other friends

want. But as Pamela McDonald explains diet is not merely a method for controlling weight, but has a
significant influence on health and quality of life.
I can hardly imagine that living on fried bacon would be a good way to lose weight and promote good
overall health. Likewise a steady diet of cabbage soup would likely become somewhat monotonous(单调乏味的) after a couple of days.
Pamela McDonald takes a different approach, there is no one-size-fits-all diet, different people need
different things. Although all humans are intrinsically(本质地) composed of the same material, the building blocks, our genes, are subtlety different.
The author maintains that one particular part of a person"s DNA, something called the APO E gene,
has much to do with how our body tolerates foods of different types. This gene comes in 8 varieties and
depending on the variety the food requirements are different. This has little to do with weight loss, and has more to do with overall good health. Weight gain is not a "problem" but rather a symptom. A diet alone
will not resolve the entire problem, it is merely one part of the larger picture.
I have to admit that parts of The APO E Gene Diet were a little heavy going, I appreciate that the
author felt the requirement to back up her claims with some scientific data, but for the lay(外行的) man
it makes for some rather difficult reading.
The second half of the book, is recipes, now this is something I do understand! She has created some
very innovative dishes, and certainly more than one that had me feeling hungry just reading them. My
favorite of them is a very traditional English dish the Cornish Pasty.
An interesting book and one that people should read, you can get your copy from Amazon.
B.To share her reviews of a book about diets.
C.To advertise for the Amazon online bookstore.
D.To introduce a new way of losing weight.
B. Humans are completely made up of the same genes.
C. Different APO E gene decides if you are healthy.
D. Diets alone can successfully help fat people lose weight.
B. It supports its arguments with convincing scientific explanation.
C. Parts of it are difficult for common readers to understand well.
D. It is a heavy book that is too long for many readers to finish.
B. Gaining weight indicates there may be something wrong with your health.
C. The writer is deeply attracted by the dishes introduced in the book.
D. You can learn how to make the Cornish Pasty from the book.
