How does it happen that children learn their mother tongue SO well? When we compare them
With adults learning a foreign language,we often find this interesting fact.A little child without
knowledge or experience often succeeds in a complete mastery of the language.A grown—up person with fully developed mental powers,in most cases, may end up with a faulty and inexact corflllland. What accounts for tllis difference?
Despite other explanations。tlle real answer in my opinion hes partly in the child himself, partly in the behaviour of the people around him.In the first place, the time of learning the mother tongue in the most favorable of all, namely, the first years of hfe.A child hears it spoken from morning till night and, what is more important, always in its genuine form, with the right pronunciation, rightIntonation, right use of words and right structure. He drinksin all the words and expressions which come to him in a hsh.ever—bubbhng spring. There is no resistance:there is perfect assimilation.
Then the child has,as it were, private lessons all the year round, while an adult language—
student has each week a limited number of hours which he generally shares with others. The child
has another advantage:he hears the language in all possible situations, always accompanied by the
right kind of gestures and facial expressions. Here there is nothing unnatural, such as is often found
In language lessons in schools, when one talks about ice and snow in June or scorching heat in January And what a child hears is generally what immediately interests him.Again and again, when his attempts at speech a聪successful, his desires are understood and fulfilled.
Finally, though a child’S“teachers”may not have been trained in language teaching, their re-
lations with him are always close and personal.ney take great pains to Inske their lessons easy.
60.’rhe main idea of the passage is——.
A.to tell why the native language is learnt SO well by children

Antarctica, with its seemingly endless icy beauty, is one place where one look is worth a thousand words. My own dream to see it came true last January when I joined the sixth exploration crew(考查队) of the China National Marine Bureau. We spent 10 days connecting flights to reach our goal, but finally arrived at the Great Wall Station on Antarctica on the eve of Chinese New Year. There are only two seasons in Antarctica: winter and summer. You get polar nights in winter and polar days in summer. Day is longer than night in summer, and the temperature often reaches below zero. Luckily, there are no snowstorms in summer, which makes it the best season to travel. What I imagined before starting for Antarctica was a world of ice, storms, endless cold and loneliness. When I stopped on Antarctica for the first time, however, I saw rich, energetic and beautiful scenery that was beyond anything I had imagined.
We only spent 11 days at the South Pole, but every minute was spent taking pictures and losing our heart to the wonderland. Beauty enveloped us as we watched the world around us. The mountains, oceans, ice, snow, sky, earth and people all seemed to have their own stories.
Rocks from Antarctica are considered valuable. Unfortunately, I didn’t bring one back. However, my heavy bags full of films are certainly worth that. It is in these pictures that the true Antarctica comes alive.

The largest television network in America is not ABC, CBS, or Fox. Nor is it one of the cable net—works such as CNN, which carries only news and news stories. It is not ESPN, the all-sports cable net-work, or even MTV, which is famous for its music videos. Rather it is PBS, Public Broadcasting System, a non-profit public broadcasting TV service. PBS has 349 member television stations in the U. S. and some member stations by cable in Canada.
PBS only attracts a minority of all TV viewers, about 2 percent. The industry leader, NBC, however, attracts 11 percent of viewers. But the growth of public television in the past two decades has been dramatic. This is especially noteworthy when one considers that public television stations must often survive on very limited budgets, on viewers’ donations, and on private foundations and some governmental funding.
The level of quality of PBS programs, whether in national and international news, entertainment, or education, is excellent. Almost a whole generation of children throughout the world is familiar with Sesame Street and the characters of The Muppet Show. PBS is especially well known for the quality of its many educational TV programs. Over 95 percent of all public television stations have tele-courses. These courses are accepted and supported by more than 1,800 colleges and universities throughout the US. Each year, over a quarter of a million students take courses this way.

B. Ninety—five percent of their programs are tele—courses.
C. They are shrinking in number because they make no profits.
D. Their courses are accepted by many universities in America.

Tennis rates high on the list, too.
