to check your reading ability.
There are four parts in the book:
Part 1 is Messages: In this part somebody wants to send information in writing to somebody else. There is
a test on timetable and a test on text messages.
Part 2 is People: In this part all the tests are about people. For example, there is an informal letter between
friends. There is formal English in biography (传记). There is a job application as a model to help with your
writing, as well as testing your reading.
Part 3 is Places: In this part, too, many different kinds of English are shown, some informal and some
formal. There is the informal English of a holiday postcard. There is also the formal English in a letter of
complaint.
Part 4 is Things: You will find some descriptive writing in this part. There are descriptions of clothes and
of a computer.
You can do these tests in any order you like, or you can do all the tests with a formal or informal text. I
enjoyed writing this book and I hope you enjoy using it.

in China, in the United States, high school is usually divided into two periods, the first two or three years are
called "junior high school" and the other is "senior high school".
In China, children enjoy free education of nine years, but in the United States, the students enjoy free
education until they are 18 years old. As a result of the free education system (制度), American children
have little difficulty in going to senior high school.
American high school students can take part in a lot of activities outside of the classroom. The activities
are organized by the school, such as joining a music group or a sports team. Certainly, just like us students
in China, American students have to work hard in order to get good marks if they want to go to a good

If you choose to rent accommodation in private houses, the choices are lodgings, private hostels (招待所)
and bedsits (卧室兼起居室). In a lodging, your landlord/landlady lives in the same house, possibly with his /
her family, and prepares meals for you. For hostel accommodation and lodgings where meals are included,
you can expect to pay from 300 to 400 pounds per month. For bedsit, you would pay from 200 to 380 pounds
per month.

| Is learning a foreign language ever easy? Yes. If you are five and move to another country, you will quickly pick up the language. But what about for the rest of us who are no longer five, and need to be polite when traveling for business or for pleasure? I think that answer is also yes. Language learning can be easy if you don"t want or need to learn too much. The key to successful language learning in my mind is not to set the goal too high. It is rather like running. Even if you run twice a week, you don"t necessarily want to be able to run a marathon. You might just want to maintain a level of fitness. I think the same can be true for language learning. Let"s get back to the goal. If you decide to learn ten words in a foreign language before visiting the country, you know that you will manage to do this. However, if you decide to attain conversational fluency, unless you are an exceptionally talented individual, you will probably fail and give up in disgust. It is also far easier to start learning a foreign language than to finish. In other words, the better you are, the slower it can be to improve, because you will get stuck with grammar, making sentences, learning less common words, etc. If you are only trying to learn a few foreign words and phrases, you will enjoy faster progress, have more fun, and won"t have to spend too much time.
