middle school students who watch TV or play video games during the week do worse in school. The study
also says that watching TV and playing video games on weekends don"t affect school performance that much.
"They could watch a lot on weekends and it didn"t seem to connect with doing worse in school," said Dr.
Iman Sharif of Children"s Hospital at Montefiore in New York. The study appears in the October issue of
Pediatrics. Researchers drew their conclusions after surveying (调查) 4,500 students in New Hampshire and
Vermont middle schools.
To reach their findings, researchers didn"t look at grades or test scores. Instead, they asked students to
rate their own performance on a scale ranging from "excellent" to "below".
Other studies have found a connection between kids" ability to learn and the amount of TV they watch.
One study even found that kids with televisions in their bedrooms scored about eight points lower on math
and language arts tests than kids without them.
What should a kid do? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends (推荐) that kids watch TV
no more than two hours and that televisions be kept out of children"s rooms. Weekend viewing should be
kept to four hours at most each day.

or even the ability to do well in school. These are at best only indicators of something larger, deeper, and far
more important. By intelligence we mean a style of life, a way of behaving in various situations. The true test
of intelligence is not how much we know to do, but how we behave when we don"t know what to do.
The intelligent person, young or old, meeting a new situation or problem, opens himself up to it. He tries
to take in with mind and senses everything he can about it. He thinks about it,instead of about himself or what
it might cause to happen to him. He grapples (努力克服) with it boldly, imaginatively, resourcefully (善于应
变地), and if not confidently, at least hopefully; if he fails to master it, he looks without fear or shame at his
mistakes and learns what he can from them. This is intelligence. Clearly its roots lie in a certain feeling about
life, and one"s self with respect to life. Just as clearly, unintelligence is not what most psychologists seem to
suppose, the same thing as intelligence, only less of it. It is an entirely different set of attitudes.
Years of watching and comparing bright children with the not-bright, or less bright, have shown that they
are very different kinds of people. The bright child is curious about life and reality, eager to get in touch with
it, embrace (捉住机会) it, unite himself with it. There is no wall, no barrier, between himself and life. On the
other hand, the dull child is far less curious, far less interested in what goes on and what is real, more inclined
(倾向于) to live in a world of fantasy. The bright child likes to experiment, to try things out. He lives by the
maxim (格言) that there is more than one way to skin a cat. If he can"t do something one way, he"ll try another.
The dull child is usually afraid to try at all. It takes a great deal of urging to get him to try even once; if that try
fails, he is through.
Nobody starts off stupid. Hardly an adult in a thousand,or ten thousand, could in any three years of his life
learn as much. Grow as much in his understanding of the world around him,as every infant(婴儿)learns and
grows in his first three years. But what happens,as we grow older,to this extraordinary capacity for learning
and intellectual growth? What happens is that it is destroyed, and more than by any other one thing, it is
destroyed by the process that we misname education-a process that goes on in most homes and schools.

(十几岁的孩子) problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain a wonderful,
reasonable and helpful child will turn into a terrible animal.
I"ve seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son, right
from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman.
I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling (懒散地躺) himself on the sofa in full length, he made
no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick
glance at me. His mother was ashamed, "I don"t know what to do with him these days," she said. "He"s
forgotten all the manners we taught him."
He hasn"t forgotten them. He"s just decided that he"s not going to use them. She confessed (坦白) that she
would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor.
Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare
at me and say, "I don"t like your dress; it"s ugly." One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school.
The other has left home.
"Where did we go wrong?" her parents are now very sad. Probably nowhere much. At least, no more than

shadow other ways in which children can be inspired to learn." Here is a fresh method to ensure students to
make the grade.
● The School
Fairview Elementary School is located in the south side of Modesto, California, where the crime rate is
high. Fairview, with about 1,000 students from kindergarten through to sixth grade, has long suffered from
discipline problems, poor test scores, and a nearly total lack of communication with their parents. These
problems are not surprising because many of the parents-immigrants who work on farms or in factories-speak
little or no English.
● The Method
Since 2002, Fairview Elementary School has been on a five-year program: to keep America strong, children
must be trained to respect many points of view, and understand the five freedoms, such as freedom of speech.
As students learn the rights and responsibilities of a good citizen, they will develop the skills and attitudes
needed to excel in study.
The program has no set classes. Fairview students enjoy "freedoms" other kids might envy (they voted not
to wear school uniforms, for example). They accept such responsibilities as speaking up during class
discussions, and keeping the school clean and safe (Fairview is considered the cleanest of 33 schools in its
district). Different from tradition, there is no hand-raising in class. "Instead," says teacher Deborah Supnet,
"we teach them to listen until the other child stops talking." It is called an exercise in respect.
● ______
Last year, the number of students who performed well in math doubled, from 15% to 30%. Suspension
(停学) rates dropped by 50%. What is particularly encouraging to headmaster Rob Williams is that the school
now has an active parents" group: Parents with a Voice. One of those parents, Laura Malagon, believes that the
program allows her to play a more active role in her children"s school life.
B. a change in an immigrant school
C. many ways to improve students" qualities
D. a fresh idea that can improve education
B. The poor performance of their students.
C. The lack of freedom to speak.
D. The lack of contact with parents.

robot? It might sound like science fiction, but professors at the university of Tokyo have taken the first steps
toward making that scenario a reality. The team recently introduced a humanoid kitchen robot that can pour
tea and other drinks into cups and serve them to guests. When teatime is over, the robot can also wash the
dishes and put them away.
In California, another interesting kitchen robot has been developed. Called the Readybot, it can pick up
objects and either store them in cabinets or put them in the trash. It also carries a separate floor-cleaning robot
that can operate by itself. Unlike the Japanese robot, Readybot is not humanoid. Instead, it looks more like a
large box with arms and wheels.
Readybot was created by engineers and designers who established a club called the Readybot Challenge.
They believe that in the future millions of robots will be needed in homes to perform ordinary household tasks.
Readybot is just the first step in their plan to create a robot that can tackle jobs not only in kitchens but in other
rooms of homes and in offices as well.
Clearly there are technological hurdles to overcome before robots can cook a complete dinner, and there
are also many safety concerns. Not everyone (especially parents) would be comfortable with the idea of robots
in their house, manipulating hot pans and sharp knives. The European Commission recently funded a project
to study these concerns.
B. It looks more like a person than Readybot does.
C. It speaks more languages than Readybot does.
D. It costs 1ess to manufacture than Readybot does.
B. In automobiles
C. On playgrounds
D. At companies
B. They don"t have strong opinions about kitchen robots.
C. They might think that kitchen robots could be dangerous.
D. They can"t wait to buy kitchen robots for their homes.
B. It has printed manuals
C. It has hired workers
D. It has provided money
