Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS)-also called “second-hand smoke” and “passive smoking” contains over 4 000 chemicals, including over 50 known carcinogens (致癌物) and many poisonous things. No safe level of ETS exposure has been proved. Nor is there any expectation that further research will identify such a level.
Several recent reviews have confirmed the serious risks to health and life associated with passive smoking. Long time exposure to second-hand smoke has been proved as a cause of many of the same diseases caused by active smoking, including lung cancer, cardiovascular (心脏血管的) disease, and childhood disease.
Living with a smoker has been shown to increase the risk of coronary heart disease (冠心病) among non-smokers by 25-30% (a recent study indicates that this figure may actually be higher). There is also growing evidence that passive smoking is causally linked to stroke in non-smokers, although further research is needed to estimate the risk.
Second-hand smoke is especially dangerous for young children and infants, being associated with sudden infant death, pneumonia, bronchitis (支气管炎), asthma (哮喘) and respiratory symptoms as well as middle ear disease. ETS exposure in pregnant women can cause lower birth weight, foetal (胎儿的) death and preterm delivery.
Most of the adverse health outcomes brought about by ETS show that the risk increases steadily with increasing exposure. The level of individual risk is lower compared to active smoking. Nevertheless, the fact that large numbers of people are exposed results in a substantial burden of disease.
Action on smoke-free environments would not only protect people from the harm of ETS exposure but also contribute to the reduction of tobacco consumption in the whole population. The health effects of reduced passive and active smoking would include reduced illness and death from major disease types-in particular lung cancer, coronary heart disease, and stroke-and increased life expectancy.
51. Which of the following statements is true? _______
A. Although ETS contains many harmful things, it is not unsafe.
B. The fact that second-hand smoke is safe has been recently found.
C. It is expected that further research will be done to test the level of ETS.
D. By far the safe level of ETS has not been found and will not in the future.
52. Cardiovascular disease can be caused by _______.
A. long time passive smoking B. accidental active smoking
B. occasional passive smoking D. short term active smoking
53. According to the article, the statements about the risk of coronary heart disease are wrong EXCEPT that________
A. if you smoke, the risk of this disease will increase by 25-30%.
B. the non-smokers exposed to smoke will increase the risk of this disease by 25-30%.
C. for the smokers, the risk of getting this disease is higher than that of the non-smokers.
D. the non-smokers exposed to smoke will be more easily to get this disease than the smokers.
54. What does the underlined word “delivery” mean? ________.
A. Transferring to another B. Giving birth C. Throwing away D. Giving out
55. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing this passage? ______

Modern scientists have mad great development in building computers that can imitate logical thought. There are two schools of thought on artificial intelligence(人工智能)。 Supporters of “Strong AI” consider that all human thought can be broken down into a set of mathematical operations. They expect that they will one day be able to copy the human mind and create a robot able to both think and feel, with a sense of self---the stuff of classic science fiction. Supporters of “Weak AI” think a computer might seem intelligent, but it is not aware of what it is doing, with no sense of self or consciousness.
Now the development of life---like robots may be closer to reality than you think. Engineers have created robotic soccer players, and bees that act like the real thing.
Powered by a small battery on her back, humanoid robot Lola is a soccer champion. “The idea of the robot is that it can walk and see things because it has a video camera on top.” Raul Rojas, Ph.D., professor of artificial intelligence at Freie University in Berlin, Germany, told Ivanhoe. Using the camera on her head, Lola recognizes objects by color.
“Using this camera, Lola can locate objects on the floor, such as a red ball, go after the ball and try to score a goal,” said Dr. Rojas. German engineers have also created a bee robot. It can imitate the bee’s “waggle” dance which communicates the location of food and water.
“Later what we want to prove is that the robot can send the bees in any decided direction using the waggle dance,” said Dr. Rojas.
Robots like this could one day become high-tech surveillance(侦察) tools that secretly fly and record data.
64. Robotic soccer players mentioned in the text reach the level of .
A. “Strong AI” technology B. “Weak AI” technology
C. being able to think themselves D. having a sense of consciousness
65. How does Lola tell different objects according to the text?
A. By microwave B. By sound C. By smell. D. By color
66. The underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refers to “ ”.
A. a bee robot B. a robotic soccer player
C. a bee that can use the waggle dance D. a surveillance tool
67. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the text?
A. A robot able to both think and feel only exists in science fiction now.
B. Scientists have created the robots that can play soccer better than men.
C. Engineers have created robotic soccer players and bees that can replace the real thing,
D. Scientists have made great development in recording data in the past few years.
People should be warned against using mobile phones outdoors in stormy weather because they may “be struck by lightning”, according to doctors.
Three experts have described how a teenage girl was struck by lightning while using her phone in a large London park. The girl, aged 15, recovered, but a year later was still wheelchair-bound and found to be suffering complex physical and emotional problems.
The girl also had a perforate eardrum(打孔耳膜)on the side where she had been holding the mobile phone. She was having general recovery in Northwick Park Hospital, Middlesex.
Swinda Esprit, a senior house officer, said that while the brain and muscle damage was similar to that of many lightning victims—who can experience heart attacks on being struck— the ear problems were not.
She said that the damages were particularly relevant for people who might be involved in less serious lightning incidents, who might otherwise recover, but would never get their full hearing back if struck while on the phone.
“We were shocked by the damage, which is why we wanted to draw attention to it,” Dr Esprit said. “A year on and she still was suffering these difficult hearing.”
They added that three other cases had been reported in newspapers in China, South Korea, and Malaysia. In the Malaysian case, a sales executive was killed by lightning while talking on his phone during a thunderstorm near Kuala Lumpur.
“All these events resulted in death,” the doctors wrote. “This rare phenomenon is a public health issue, and education is necessary to stress the risk.”
The Australian Lightning Protection Standard recommends that metallic objects, including cordless or mobile phones, should not be carried outdoors during thunderstorms. However, “the United States National Weather Service says on its website that both are safe to use “because there is no direct path between you and the lightening”.
Paul Taylor, of “the Met Office”, said the ear injuries were a consequence of mobile phones being metal, and not related to radio waves.
Mr. Taylor said that mobile phones should be treated as another piece of metal, similar to carrying coins or wearing rings, and people need to be warned against the possible danger.
51. What do we know about the teenage girl?
A. She was struck by lightning at school.
B. She completely recovered from being struck.
C. She still suffered from mental problems.
D. She had to press her ear all day.
52. It can be inferred that damage done by lightening while using mobile phones ______.
A. is more serious than that when one is not using a mobile phone
B. can be healed quickly except for heart attacks
C. is less serious because the victims can usually recover
D. is mainly in the brain and muscle of the victims
53. Why did doctors stress the risk about using phones outside in lightening?
A. Because more people are faced with it. B. Because some deaths have been caused.
C. Because lightning is harmful for the brain. D. Because a teenage girl got killed.
54. We can infer from the last three paragraphs that ______.
A. both cordless and mobile phones are safe to use outside in lightning
B. there is no direct connection between lightning and ear injuries at all
C. opinions differ as to whether it is safe to use mobiles phones in lightning
D. ear injuries are the result of carrying coins or wearing rings in lightning
55. The purpose in writing this passage is ______.
A. to draw attention to the risk of using mobile phones in lightening
B. to focus on various damages done to lightning victims
C. to tell us the news that a teenage girl was struck by lightning
D. to stress the danger of making phone calls in lightning

The latest reform in testing is the computerized test. Test questions and answer choices are presented on the 21 and students can answer with a tap of the keyboard or a click of the mouse. Before the actual test begins, there usually is an instruction showing how to use the computer to 22 the questions. Scores are displayed on the screen at the end of the test so that a student has immediate feedback 23 having to return several days later for results.
Some computerized tests are “adaptive”. This means that a test question is selected from a large pool of items based on how the test taker has responded to the 24 questions. The first question presented is of medium difficulty. If the test taker answers 25 , the next item will be more difficult. If he or she answers incorrectly, the next question will be easier. The computer 26 questions by level of difficulty and many other factors such as sex, race and age references, subject area the question is drawn from, and form of question, before presenting it on the screen. In this way, the questions are “adapted” to find the true skill 27 of the test taker.
Among all the conveniences of computerized testing, there are some 28 . No longer can you have a quick look at the 29 test, answer the easy questions first, and come back later to finish the difficult ones. Test items are presented one at a time, and you must choose an answer in order to move on to the next question. Once you have confirmed your answer, you cannot go back to 30 it if,later on, you realize that your answer was wrong.

When his friends noticed how much better life had become for him, and asked why, Dr. Johnson shared his "Cheese" story. Many later said how greatly the story had helped them to keep their sense of humor, to change, and to gain something better, too.
Twenty years after the story was created, "Who Moved My Cheese?" was finally published. It soon became a No.1 international best seller, with one million hardcover copies in print within the first sixteen months and over ten million copies within the next two years.
Some critics (批评家) do not understand why so many people find the book so valuable. They say the story is simple enough for a child to understand, and it insults (侮辱) their intelligence. Some even fear it suggests that people should mindlessly accept unnecessary changes forced upon them by others, although that is not in the story.
The author said that both the fans and the critics are "right" in their own way. It is not what is in the story of "Who Moved My Cheese?" but how you understand it and apply it to your own situation that gives it value.
Hopefully the way you understand the story of "Who Moved My Cheese?" and the way you put it into action in your life will help you find and enjoy the "New Cheese" you deserve (应得).
60. Why did the book "Who Moved My Cheese?" become a best seller as soon as it was published?

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.
Most people know this joke. But recently, some people have been much more worried about how the grizzly bear(灰熊)and mountain lion can cross the road.
"Millions of animals die each year on US roads," the Federal Highway Administration reports. In fact, only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat, exist in the US today. The main reason? Road kill.
"Ecopassages (生态通道 ) " may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. They are paths both over and under roads. "These ecopassages can be extremely useful, so that wildlife can avoid road accidents," said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Protection Society.
But do animals actually use the ecopassages? The answer is yes. Paul Beier of Northern Arizona University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an ecopassage that went under a highway. This showed that the lions used the passage.
Builders of ecopassages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees on and around them. Animals seem to be catching on. Animals as different as salamanders(火蜥蜴) and grizzly bears are using the bridges and underpasses.
The next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around. You might see an animal overpass!

B.animals begin to learn to use ecopassages |
C.animals are crossing the road in groups |
D.animals are increasing in number |
A.wild animals may attack cars | B.wild animals may jam the road |
C.they may see wild animals in the park | D.they may see wild animals on ecopassages |
