阅读理解。     Scientists say illegal logging is threatening one of Mexico"s most famous insects. Satellite pictures show
large wooded areas have been cleared from the central Mexican state of Michoacan. The forests are the winter
home for millions of monarch butterflies. The butterflies go there each year to reproduce. After reproducing,
the adult butterflies die, but their young return to the home of their parents each spring.
The American space agency released the relevant satellite pictures last month. The images show the Monarch
Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. A Mexican law protects trees growing in the area. The images show that about
four hundred and forty-five hectares have been cleared since 2004. Scientists say that, if the clearing continues,
monarch butterflies are unlikely to continue using the Reserve as their winter home.
For thousands of years, the butterflies have been flying to the same forests. Their trip begins along the border
of Canada and the northeastern United States. The insects fly about eighty kilometers a day. They reach central
Mexico after about sixty days. No one is sure why the brightly coloured orange and black butterflies chose these
forests. However, scientists believe the area might offer the right mix of wetness and cool weather to keep the
insects alive through the winter.
Lincoln Brower is a professor of biology at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. He has been studying monarch
butterflies for fifty-two years. He says they have been migrating along the same path for about ten thousand
years. People in Mexico have compared the arrival of the butterflies to dark cloud-like formations (阵式) filling
the air. The monarchs arrive in such large numbers that they sometimes cover whole trees.
Mexico"s President ordered special protection for the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve eight years ago.
The Mexican government has struggled to enforce (强制) the order. Although illegal logging has become one
way for poor people to earn money, other Mexicans are fighting to protect the butterflies" home. 1. What would be the BEST title for the text? A. Illegal Clearing of Forests Threatens Winter Home of Monarch Butterflies
B. The Forests are the Winter Home for Monarch Butterflies
C. Monarch Butterflies Like the Winter Home in the Forests
D. Protecting the Forests Can Protect Monarch Butterflies 2. Why are the forests called the winter home for millions of monarch butterflies? Because each winter
the butterflies travel there to _____. A. avoid cold
B. look for food
C. sleep
D. produce young 3. Why did monarch butterflies choose the forest as their winter home? A. It has many trees.
B. It has the appropriate environment for them.

B. travelling regularly from one part of the world to another
C. changing from one place or position to another
D. starting using an area again as a place to live 5. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?  A. Mexico has nothing but forests.

格1个单词。      Quality after-school programs are designed to improve academic performance, decrease youth crimes and
other high-risk behaviors, and help young people grow into healthy, successful adults.
The effect of quality after-school programs on academic performance is clear. Studies show that students
who take part in such programs show better work habits, higher rates of homework completion, improved
grades, and higher scores on achievement tests. They also have fewer absences and are less likely to blame.
After-school programs also influence high-risk teen behavior. Various studies show decreased rates of crime,
drug use, and teen sex among youth who join in well-run after-school programs when compared to similar
youth who do not. Finally, after-school programs play an important role in supporting the following fields of
development: physical development, mental development and social development. Thus, one can safely say that
after-school programming is an effective method to help young people become contributing members of society.
Although there is enough proof from both small and large assessments that after-school programs can make
a positive difference, it is important to note that not all programs are equal. First, dosage (时量) matters-young
people who attend the most hours over the most years benefit more than members who attend less often or
over a shorter period of time. Next, after-school programs make bigger difference for those students who need
help most and have the fewest choices. Finally, program qualities matter. After-school programs work best
when they create unique opportunities for youth. They should provide opportunities for positive relationships,
skill building, meaningful involvement (参与), expression, suggestion, service, and work. Staff characteristics
make an important difference in the quality of a program. The adults should treat youth as partners, create safe
and fair environments, encourage personalized (个性化的) involvement, and actively create learning
opportunities. In short, although after-school programs have promising future, how they are designed and run
matters.

1个单词。      Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not
necessary so, however, Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here"s how.
     1) Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have
to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping,
dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don"t forget to set aside enough time for
entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is
happening to your time.
      2) Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which
may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios,
or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
      3) Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers
say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher
says.
     4) Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points
that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read
that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
     5) Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a
subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won"t end if you don"t pass a test, so
don"t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many
others after you have tried these.

More teachers are starting off the school year with letters to parents and students to introduce themselves
and set a tone (基调)for the year. The letters are a good way to start positive communication with parents,
several teachers told Education World.
"I think it"s professional (专业的)," said Dorothy Peselli, an English teacher at Sparta
High School in Sparta, New Jersay, Peselli, who gives out the letters the first day of school,
told Education World."It gives parents an image of you as a professional. If you start
communication off in a positive manner, you will have the parents on your side when you need them."
In her letter to parents, Peselli encourages them to call or e-mail her with specific concerns about their
children."I want to work as a team to make sure that your child becomes an independent lifelong learner,"
Peselli wrote to parents last September. She also telephones the parents of all her students at the beginning of
the year.
Peselli includes with the letter a classroom handbook (手册) listing plans and rules. And she requires that
both parents and students read and sign statements (included in the letter!) that they read the handbook. The
student letter also lists needed supplies and gives encouragement."Please come to class ready to work and learn.
This will be an exciting year for all of us," it  says.

she had so much contact with them,"I received roses and a thank-you note from one boy and his mother".
Peselli said. She wished her own children"s teachers would take the time to write notes as well."I never got a

They found that when people listened to their favorite music, their blood vessels (血管) dilated in much
the same way as when they are laughing, or taking blood medications (药物).
"We have a pretty impressive effect," said Dr Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology (心脏病学)
at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
"Blood vessel diameter improved," he said. "The vessel opened up pretty significantly. You can see the
vessels opening up with other activities such as exercise." A similar effect is seen with drugs such as statins.
When blood vessels open up more, blood flows more smoothly and is less likely to form the clots (凝块)
that cause heart attacks and strokes. "We are not saying to stop your stations or not to exercise but rather to
add this to an overall program of heart health," said Miller, who presented his findings to a meeting of the
American Heart Association in New Orleans.
Miller"s team tested 10 healthy, non-smoking men and women, who were told to bring their favorite music.
They spent half an hour listening to the recordings and half an hour listening to music they said made them feel
anxious while the researchers did ultrasound (超声波) tests designed to show blood vessel function.
Compared to their normal baseline measurements, blood vessel diameter increased 26 percent on average
when the volunteers heard their joyful music. Listening to music they disliked-in most cases in this group heavy
metal-blood vessels narrowed by six percent, Miller said.
Miller said he came up with the idea after discovering that laughter caused blood to literally flow more
smoothly. "I asked myself what other things make us feel real good, besides calories from dark chocolate of
course. Music came to mind.... It makes me feel really good," he said.
Most of the volunteers chose country music but Miller said the style is not so important rather than what
pleases each individual. 1. The underlined word dilate (in paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to "_____". A. widen
B. move
C. change
D. increase 2. According to the passage, which of the following will NOT cause blood vessels to open up? A. Taking exercise.
B. Listening to unpleasant music.
C. Bursting into laughter.
D. Taking drugs like statins. 3. It can be inferred from the passage that _____. A. blood clots are caused by heart attacks and strokes
B. music is better than chocolate for your health
C. the style of music has different effects on different people
D. a person"s overall health is more influenced by how much exercise he gets 4. What"s the best title of the passage? A. Pleasant Music Cures
B. Research into Blood Vessel
C. Music and Heart Attack
D. Music and Happiness
