They found that when people listened to their favorite music, their blood vessels (血管) dilated in much
the same way as when they are laughing, or taking blood medications (药物).
"We have a pretty impressive effect," said Dr Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology (心脏病学)
at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
"Blood vessel diameter improved," he said. "The vessel opened up pretty significantly. You can see the
vessels opening up with other activities such as exercise." A similar effect is seen with drugs such as statins.
When blood vessels open up more, blood flows more smoothly and is less likely to form the clots (凝块)
that cause heart attacks and strokes. "We are not saying to stop your stations or not to exercise but rather to
add this to an overall program of heart health," said Miller, who presented his findings to a meeting of the
American Heart Association in New Orleans.
Miller"s team tested 10 healthy, non-smoking men and women, who were told to bring their favorite music.
They spent half an hour listening to the recordings and half an hour listening to music they said made them feel
anxious while the researchers did ultrasound (超声波) tests designed to show blood vessel function.
Compared to their normal baseline measurements, blood vessel diameter increased 26 percent on average
when the volunteers heard their joyful music. Listening to music they disliked-in most cases in this group heavy
metal-blood vessels narrowed by six percent, Miller said.
Miller said he came up with the idea after discovering that laughter caused blood to literally flow more
smoothly. "I asked myself what other things make us feel real good, besides calories from dark chocolate of
course. Music came to mind.... It makes me feel really good," he said.
Most of the volunteers chose country music but Miller said the style is not so important rather than what
pleases each individual.

1) If a country wants one of its places to be on the World Heritage List, it has to ask JUESCO (联合国教
科文组织).The place must be important and special. UNESCO put the Great Wall on the list in 1987 because it
said it was great part of Chinese culture and beautifully made to go with the land. When a country asks, it must
also make a plan for taking care of the place.

on the list. The committee meet every June. Many experts help the committee to decide.

education. Some efforts begin in high school. But more and more information is available on the Internet,
not only for young people but also for adults. The goal is to teach about saving, investing (投资) and using
money.
The United States Financial Literacy and Education Commission was established in 2003. This
government group takes charge of financial education efforts through nineteen federal agencies. Information
on financial education can be found at its Web site. The address is MyMoney.gov. It includes links to
agencies that deal with banking, buying a home, investing and other areas.
The National Council on Economic Education has found that seventeen states now require high school
students to take a class in economics. This number has grown from thirteen in 1998. As of three years ago,
half of all states required students to take a class in personal finance. Yet that number has fallen, from
twenty-five to twenty-two. The National Council on Economic Education sells textbooks for grades four
through twelve. It also offers free materials for teachers. The information is available at ncee.net.
Teachers say parents also need to play a larger part in educating their children about money. A recent
study found that seventy percent of college students said they received financial advice mainly from their
parents. Investment companies also offer information. Charles Schwab, for example, has a Web site to help
parents teach their kids about money and investing. The address is SchwabMoneyWise.com.
One of the first tastes of financial independence that many young people get is through summer jobs.

to beaches, mountains to flatlands. These conditions help create all sorts of weather: mild, moderate and
extreme. Sometimes all in one day! In the summer, some areas get very hot and the air is very wet. But others
have dry air, so the heat does not feel so bad.
In the winter, parts of the country get cold and snowy while others stay warm and sunny. This is the
difference between, for example, New York City on the East Coast and Los Angeles on the West Coast. Yet
even the East Coast has its warm places in winter, like Florida.
The oceans affect weather along the coasts. The Pacific coast has smaller temperature changes and calmer
conditions than along the Atlantic.
Alaska and Hawaii are the only states not connected to the forty-eight mainland states. Alaska is in the
Arctic area, so it gets very cold. Hawaii, out in the Pacific, is warm all year long.
Weather in the central and northeastern parts of the country is affected by cold air from Canada and warm
air from the Caribbean. Conditions can change quickly.
Hurricanes are ocean storms that strike mainly in the Southeast. The hurricane season is, officially, June
through November. Tornadoes are a risk across the country. These are locally severe windstorms. They
generally happen in spring and summer.
In fact, March eighteenth happens to be the eightieth anniversary of the most deadly tornado in United
States history. The nineteen twenty-five"Tri-State Tornado" hit parts of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The
National Weather Service says the horrible twister killed nearly seven hundred people.

Just 33,526 of London"s estimated 3.5 million workers signed up with St John"s Ambulance and the British
Red Cross to learn simple first aid last year. The figures coming from a new report show that nine out of 10
people would not know what to do if a colleague was badly hurt, while 72 percent have never attended a
first-aid course.
Doctors describe the situation as appalling and have called for urgent training in schools and the workplace.
Training in first aid should start at an early age and should be taught to everybody at school. First aid is very
important because at best it can save lives and at worst it reduces pressure on hospital rooms. Employers get
anxious when a worker has had some sort of accident in the office or factory and rush them to the
hospital-even if all they require is a bandage.
Last year 20,000 Londoners were trained in first aid by St John"s Ambulance, the leading provider in
life-saving courses, and 13,526 were trained by the Red Cross. According to St John"s Ambulance, four out of
five parents do not know how to carry out mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (苏醒).
Nick Suggitt, training manager with St John Ambulance, said,"We are training just a tiny part of the number
necessary, and only touching the tip of the iceberg."
"Not enough people know how to save a life, and since many emergencies occur at home or at work, these
skills are often needed to save the life of a friend or a family member."
B. terrible
C. rising
D. challenging
B. many people are unwilling to take the training
C. most people know nothing or very little about first aid
D. 90 percent of people never attend first-aid courses
B. many people are rushed to the hospital with only slight injuries
C. mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is quite important for parents at home
D. a number of people are trained
