Mom is usually home on Sunday but this week she was going to a big golf game and I was all alone in
the house. I was mad at Mom for divorcing Dad.
I kept looking at the telephone until I couldn"t stand it any longer. I picked up the receiver and dialed Dad"s
number over in Bakersfield. I even remembered to dial 1 first because it was long distance."You promised to
phone me this week but you didn"t," I said, feeling I had to talk to him.
"Take it easy, kid," he said. "I just didn"t get around to it. I was going to call this evening. The week isn"t
over yet."
I thought about that.
"Something on your mind?" he asked.
"I hoped you would call, so I waited and waited." Then I was sorry I said it.
"There was heavy snow in the morning," he said, "I had to chain up on highway 80 and lost time."
I know putting chains on eight big wheels in the snow is no fun. I felt a little better, as long as we were
talking. "How is Bandit?" I asked.
There was a funny silence. For a minute I thought the line was dead. Then I knew something must have
happened to my dog.
"Well, kid", he began. "My name is Leigh!" I almost yelled. "I"m not just some kid you met on the street!"
"Keep your shirt on, Leigh," he said. "When I had to stop along with some other truckers to put on chains,
I left Bandit out of the cab, I thought he would get back … I have sent out a call to CB radio, but I didn"t get
an answer yet." I was about to say I understood when there came the bad part, the really bad part. I heard a
boy"s voice say, "Hey, Bill, Mom wants to know when we"re going out to get the pizza?"

D. Leigh"s mother often went to golf games

There"s a man in the habit of hitting me on the head with an umbrella. At first I couldn"t stand it, now I"m used to it. I don"t know his name. I know he"s average in appearance, wears a gray suit, and has a common face. I met him five years ago one hot morning when I was sitting on a tree-shaded bench in Palermo Park, reading the paper. Suddenly I felt something touch my head. It was the very same man who now, as I"m writing, keeps hitting me, mechanically (机械地) and impassively, with an umbrella. On that occasion I turned around filled with anger. He just kept on hitting me. I asked him if he was crazy, he didn"t even seem to hear me. Then I threatened to call a policeman. Calmly, cool as a cucumber, he stuck with his task. After a few moments of hesitation, and seeing that he was not about to change his attitude, I stood up and hit him on the nose. The man fell down, but he immediately got back on his feet, obviously with great effort, and without a word again began hitting me on the head with the umbrella. His nose was bleeding and, at that moment, I felt sorry for him. I felt regret for having hit him so hard. After all, the man wasn"t exactly hitting me; he was merely tapping me lightly with his umbrella, not causing any pain at all. Of course, those taps were extremely bothersome. As we all know, when a fly lands on your forehead, you don"t feel any pain; what you feel is annoyance. Well then, that umbrella was one huge fly that kept landing on my head time after time. Convinced that I was dealing with a madman, I tried to escape. But the man followed me, wordlessly continuing to hit me. So I began to run (I should point out that not many people run as fast as I do). He took off after me, trying to land a blow. The man was out of breath so that I thought, if I continued to force him to run at that speed, he would drop dead right then and there. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

A mother and daughter living in my community are two of the most unfriendly people I have ever come across in my life. They are totally separated, mixing with 1 . As they drive past 2 they keep their eyes looking away and make no sign of acknowledgement. The only fame they have is making a nuisance (讨厌 的人) of themselves to the local police station by 3 music played too loud, dogs barking more than once a day and any other petty 4 gripe (把柄). On moving into this neighborhood, I was 5 of these two but decided I would make up my own mind. This proved quite a 6 to me as more than once either the mother or the daughter would knock on my door and blast (猛烈抨击) me with some 7 or other. I 8 answered politely and made sure I 9 as they went past my place and also made the effort now and then to make a kind remark about their garden or pets.
