I arrived at my mother"s home for our Monday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from the
kitchen. Mother was pulling out quilt (被子) after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. She was preparing for a quilt show at the Elmhurst Church. When we began to fold and put them back
into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box. I pulled it out. "What is this?" I asked.
"Oh?" Mom said, "That"s Mama"s quilt." I spread the quilt. It looked as if a group of school children
had pieced it together; irregular designs, childish pictures, a crooked line on the right.
"Grandmother made this?" I said, surprised. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This
certainly didn"t look like any of the quilts she had made.
"Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes," she said.
"I"m still working on it. See, this is what I"ve done so far."
I looked at it more closely. She had made straight a crooked line. At the center of the quilt, she had
stitched (缝)a piece of cloth with these words: "My mother made many quilts. She didn"t get all lines
straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt."
"Oh, this is so nice, Mom, "I said. It occurred to me that by completing my grandmother"s quilt, my
mother was honoring her own mother. I realized, too, that I held in my hands a family treasure. It started
with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another.    1. Why did the author go to her mother"s home?         A. To see her mother"s quilts.

Tom was a clever boy, but his parents were poor, so he had to work in his spare time and during his
holidays to pay for his education. In spite of this, he managed to get to the university, but it was so
expensive to study there that during the holiday he found it necessary to get two jobs at the same time so

was , of course , allowed to do the simplist jobs, like helping to lift people and to carry them from one
part of the hospital to another. Both at the butcher"s shop and at the hospital, Tom had to wear white
clothes.
One evening at the hospital, Tom had to carry a woman from her bed to the place where she was to
have an operation. The woman was already feeling frightened at the thought of the operation before he
came to get her, but when she saw Tom, that finished her.
"No! No!" she cried. "Not my butcher! I won"t be operated on by my butcher!" and fainted away

Jim suffered heart problems. In conversation he expressed little joy and it seemed that his life was
drawing to a close.
When his heart problems led to operation, Jim went through it successfully, and a full recovery was
expected. Within days, however, his heart was not beating properly. Jim was rushed back to operation,
but nothing was found to explain the cause of his illness. He died on the operating table on the day before
his 48th birthday.
Dr. Bruce Smoller, a psychologist (心理学家), had had many conversations with him, and the more
he learned, the stranger he realized Jim"s case was. When Jim was a child, his father,a teacher, suffered a
heart attack and stayed home to recover. One morning Jim asked his father to look over his homework,
promising to come home from school at noon to pick it up. His father agreed, but when Jim returned his
father had died. Jim"s father was 48.
"I think all his life Jim believed he killed his father, "Dr. Smoller says. "He felt that if he had not asked
him to look at his homework, his father would have lived. Jim had been troubled by the idea. The
operation was the trial(判决) he had expected for forty years. "Smoller believes that Jim willed himself
not to live to the age of 48.
Jim"s case shows the powerful role that attitude (态度) plays in physical health, and that childhood
experiences produce far-reaching effect on the health of grownups. Although most cases are less direct
than Jim"s, studies show that childhood events, besides genes, may well cause such midlife diseases as
cancer, heart disease and mental illness.
1. Jim was sent back to operation because                   .
A. his heart didn"t work well
B. he expected a full recovery
C. his life was drawing to a close
D. the first one wasn"t well performed
2. What made Dr. Smoller feel strange about Jim"s case?
A. Jim died at a young age.
B. Jim died on the operating table.
C. Both Jim and his father died of the same disease.
D. Jim"s death is closely connected with his father"s
3. From Smoller"s words, we can infer that                      .
A. Jim"s father cared little about his study
B. Smoller agreed that Jim did kill his father
C. Jim thought he would be punished some day
D. Smoller believed Jim wouldn"t live to the age of 48
4. Which of the following could have strong effect on one"s physical health according to the text?
