The Ms. Foundation, an organization for women, started the program about ten years ago. In the US, many women work outside the home. The Ms. Foundation wanted girls to find out about many different kinds of jobs. Then, when the girls grow up, they can choose a job they like.
Cara’s father is a film director. Cara says, “It was very exciting for me to go to the studio with my dad. I saw a lot of people doing different jobs.” Many businesses have special activities for girls on this day. Last year, Cara went to work with her aunt at the University of Massachusetts. In the engineering department, the girls learned to build a bridge with toothpicks and candy. In the chemistry department, they learned to use scales. They learned about many other kinds of jobs, too.
Right now, Cara does not know what jobs she will have when she grows up. But because of Take Our Daughters to Work Day, she knows she has many choices.

答案
小题1:C
小题2:B
小题3:B
小题4:B
解析
然后文章具体讲了谁能享受这个日子,都具体做什么,为什么会出现这样一个日子。之后再回到Cara这个典型的例子,更具体地体现出这个日子对女孩子带来什么样的影响。这样就可总结出文章的中心是Take Our Daughters to Work Day。用具体的人物做例子来介绍事件是新闻常见的手法,从而使新闻事件有人情味、更具体、更具趣味性。这样的新闻容易被误认为记叙文,但和记叙文不同的是,新闻强调事实性、客观性。
小题1:细节题。原文是Cara’s father is a film director。
小题2: 本题涵盖了对细节和主旨的考查,所以还要求一定的概括与推断。像原文中设此日子的目的The Ms. Foundation wanted girls to find out about many different kinds of jobs. 说明了C正确。她们在这天只是体会并不会得到工作。
小题3:这天的意义在于女孩子可接触到很多不同的工作,本题就是考查这点的理解。答案为B,因为她在studio里只是看别人工作。
小题4:选择合适的标题,其实就是考查主旨,很容易就可以确定是B。而Cara Lang是作为参与者的例子。

首先,请阅读下面有关购车的五条建议:
5 steps to getting the best price in buying a new car.
Ideally, a dealership should help you find the right vehicle at a fair price. But some dealers place more emphasis on their profit margins than on satisfying their customers.
Read the following situations and match the advice with them.
56. Many dealerships prey on the unprepared. Going into a showroom “cold”--without having gathered key facts and preliminary(初步的) pricing figures--gives the salesperson too much control over the buying process.
57. The dealer invoice price is commonly available on Web sites and in pricing guides. But the invoice price isn"t necessarily what the dealer paid. There are often behind-the-scenes bonuses(幕后红利), such as dealer incentives and holdbacks, that give the dealer more profit margin.
58. Salespeople like to mix financing, leasing, and trade-in negotiations together, often asking you to negotiate around a monthly payment figure. This tactic(策略) gives the dealer more latitude to offer you a favorable figure in one area while inflating figures in another.
59. The salesperson may try to sign you up for a higher rate than you could get elsewhere.
60. Dealers often try to sell you extras such as rust proofing, fabric protection, and paint protectant, or push etching your Vehicle Identification Number on windows to deter thieves.
请结合以上情形,与下面的建议进行匹配。
When buying a car, keep your interests front and center--and avoid common pitfalls(缺陷) that can cost you extra money--by following these tips:
A.Don"t assume that the sticker price(标价) is the purchase price(买价). To get the lowest price, go in with a starting price that"s based not on the sticker price but on how much the dealer paid for the vehicle. A reasonable price to start negotiations is either 4 to 8 percent over what the dealer paid or the CR Wholesale Price, depending on the demand for the model. |
B.Do your homework. Thoroughly research your choices. Read a variety of reviews. Check the reliability, safety, fuel economy, and pricing of any models you"re considering. And don"t wait until the day you plan to buy to test drive the vehicles. If you have a trade-in, know its approximate worth. That will depend on the vehicle"s age, condition, mileage, and equipment, as well as where you trade it in. |
C.Negotiate one thing at one time. Make clear that you want the lowest possible mark-up over your starting price. Add that you intend to visit other dealerships selling the same vehicle and will buy from the dealer with the best price. Only after you"ve settled on the price should you discuss financing, leasing, or a trade-in, as necessary. Negotiate each item individually. Remember, you"re in charge and can leave at any time. Heading for the door can sometimes jump-start a slow-moving negotiation or bring a lower offer. |
D.Don"t pay for extras you don"t need. |
E. Other costs.
In addition to the vehicle price, you need to consider other costs, including: Sales tax ; Registration fees ; Insurance premiums
Taxes and registration fees can increase your out-of-pocket cost by as much as 10 percent or more, and driving a car that’s worth more than your current one will cost more to insure. Be sure to check with your insurance agent or get insurance quotes online so you understand what you’re getting into.
F. Arrange financing in advance.
Compare interest rates at several banks, credit unions, and loan organizations before checking the dealer"s rates. If pre-approved for a loan, you can keep financial arrangements out of the negotiations. Automakers may offer attractive financing terms, but make sure you qualify for them.
1. I am a reader of CR. Recently I found students translate some articles of CR. I appreciate your offering an opportunity to us beginners to practise using English. So I want to ask how they can obtain these articles and translated them for you, and what qualities you require. Thank you.
2. I love your Crazy English Reader magazine! It provides valuable data for work in our English teaching. My wife and I are teaching Conversational English so I’ve been giving you a bit of a plug at our middle school. I told the students to “get a copy!” It’s good stuff! Fantastic!
3. I’m one of Yao’s fans from Guangzhou. I have read the Yao Ming articles in No.7 Crazy English Reader. I want to know his correspondence address and the official website. Could you please tell me? Thank you very much indeed.
4. First of all, I must say thank you very much to all the CE Reader editors who gave us a really good English magazine. Secondly, I want to give you a piece of advice. In each passage, you gave us some new words with their Chinese translation. However, as far as my knowledge, I think you should give us not only the Chinese meaning but also the English meaning so as to know the words more accurately. Thank you!
5. I am an editor of the English Monthly of our school. I have a question that is how to say the position of the paper e.g., 总编责任编辑 and so on. I hope you can help me to tell me the word in English. The more the better. Thank you so much! I love the book very much. Now, I do this work, I need study more information about this work, if you have time, please email me. Thank you.
Thank you for your suggestion. We may try that in some future issues of CR. I think the best way to improve your reading vocabulary is to be able to guess the meaning of the word from the other words around it. Also, if you have an English dictionary, it’s good to look up the words and then mark them down in a notebook and review them later on. Then if you really want to learn how to use the words, try using them in conversation or in writing. Hope this helps.
The best way for you to learn the different positions in a newspaper or magazine is to get a copy of an all-English magazine or newspaper and then copy down the different positions. There are also titles such as Managing Editor, reporter, Copy Editor, Photo Editor and Layout Editor. I hope this helps. If you have some more specific questions, you can send them to me and I’ll try to answer.
C.The best way to reach Yao directly is through his home team, the Shanghai Sharks. You can write him at 2570 Xietu Road, Shanghai. For more information on Yao, you can look at the sports section in sina. com. I hope this helps. Another idea is that you can try to write Yao while he’s living and playing in Houston. You can try to reach Yao in the US at: Yao Ming Compaq Centre 10 Houston, TX 77046
Thank you for being such a careful reader of CR. Yes, you’re right we made a mistake in the writing of that Chinese word. Each issue we try to read very carefully each article and its translation to make sure there are no mistakes, but unfortunately a few mistakes always get by. But you encourage us to keep improving, so thank you.
Yes, we do have several students who help us translate some of the articles in our magazine. We contact these translators directly after interviewing their translation work. Afterwards we assign the articles to them for translation. If you are interested in being one of our translators you can send us some information about yourself and a sample of your translation work.
Thank you for helping us to promote CR. We’re glad it’s helpful to your students. We always try to include articles that reflect real life. It’s our hope that CR will not only improve student’s English but also open up a different worldview.
