If you think American cooking means opening a package and throwing the contents into the microwave oven (微波炉), think again. On one hand, it’s true that many Americans have cold cereal  ( 谷类食品 ) for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and instant dinners. From busy homemakers to working people, many Americans enjoy the convenience of fast food that can be ready to serve in 10 minutes or less. On the other hand, many Americans realize the importance of cooking skills. Parents-especially mothers-see the importance of training their children- especially daughters. Most Americans think that there’s nothing better than a good home-cooked meal. But with cooking, as with any other skill, good results don’t happen by accident.
Probably every cook has his or her own way of cooking. But there are some basic skills that most people follow. For example, baking is a main method of preparing food in America. For that reason, Americans would find it next to impossible to live without an oven. American cooks pay special attention to the balance of foods, too. In planning a big meal they try to include meat, a few vegetables, some bread and often a dessert. They also like to make sure the meal is colouful. Having several different colors of food on the plate usually makes for a healthy meal.
For those who need guidance in their cooking, or for those who have just run out of ideas, recipes are a great help. Recipes list all the ingredients for a dish ( generally in the order used ), the amount of each to use, and a description of how to put them together.

62.The underlined word “ convenience “ in the first paragraph means _______________.

C.The high quality and low price.
D.The unusual taste of the food.
63.Many Americans have cold cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and instant dinner because ______________.
A.they like instant food very much
B.they don’t like cooking at all.
C.most American working people are busy and don’t have time to cook
D.fast food is delicious and it usually contains a lot of vitamins.
64.By saying “ But with cooking, as with any other skill, good results don’t happen by accident, the author means _____________.
A.good cooking doesn’t come easily; it needs a lot of practice

举一反三

One day when Isaac Newton was reading a book under an apple tree on the farm, an apple fell down and hit him on the head. For most people that would be the end of the story, but not for Newton. Why did the apple fall out of the tree? Does everything fall? What makes things fall? Can anything stop things from falling? Are the sun, moon, and stars falling? Why don’t they ever hit the ground?
So many questions. Newton spent many years answering these questions by thinking and doing experiments. He made up the law of gravity. According to this law everything pulls everything else to itself by a force called gravity. How strong that force is depends on how heavy the things are and how close together.
Newton’s law of gravity not only explained how things fall on earth, but now planets move around the sun and how moons move around planets. A friend of his, Edmund Halley, decided to try Newton’s theory on comets. People had been studying comets for hundreds of years without figuring them out, so he decided to study their reports and compare them to Newton’s theory.
Up till then people had thought that comets just came and went, and that nobody could know when or why. But Newton’s law of gravity gave rules that Halley could use to study the records of comets. He found some reports of a big bright comet that he was sure was the same one, coming back every 75 years. He predicted when it would come back next.
If anybody still didn’t believe Newton, then the appearance of Halley’s Comet just when Halley had predicted it using Newton’s ideas was enough to convince them. Halley’s Comet has come a few times since then, always right on schedule. You’ll be able to see it on its next trip near the sun and earth when you’re old enough to be a grandparent.
71.The passage starts with a story _____________.
A.because it was such a funny one
B.because Newton liked to eat apples
C.to show how much Newton liked reading
D/to show what started Newton’s discovering gravity
72.According to the author, Newton was especially different from others in that ____________.
A.he liked reading under apple trees
B.he liked to find out how things worked
C.he was very quiet and patient
D.he was so much interested in science
73.Newton’s law of gravity can tell us that _____________.
A.gravity has no relationship with the weight of things.
B.how things fall on earth
C.it is not of help to the study of comets
D.it can explain everything in the world
74.The underlined word “ convince” in the last paragraph probably means “______________”
A. make… believe                B. make… doubt

75. Which of the following is TRUE about Edmund Halley?

One bitterly cold day, a snowstorm blew into our area. Needing firewood, I quickly set out with my best friend, Bruce, to look for a tree to cut down. I was glad to have Bruce along. Cutting down a tree in a snowstorm can be dangerous. So it was important to have a friend who could warn me of dangers.
When I chose a big 23-meter-tall tree and prepared to cut it down, my best friend suddenly warned me, “Don’t cut down that tree! It’s too close to the power line!” I wasn’t sure about it. So I decided to disregard his warning. I wanted to finish the job quickly and go home. So I began cutting down the tree. When the tree fell, there was no longer any doubt that my friend was right.
The tree caught the power line, bringing it to the ground. I considered cutting the tree off the line. After all, electricity can’t travel through wood, so I could safely remove the tree. As I reached out my finger to touch the tree, pain ran up my arm and through my head. I had been shocked!
After I returned home and told my mother what had happened, she quickly called the power company. Workers from the power company soon arrived on the scene. One of them asked if I had touched the tree, and when I told him I had, his face turned pale.
“You should have been killed,” he said.
So why am I still alive? It was my boots that saved my life.
Within two hours, the workers removed the tree. Soon the snowstorm calmed down—but not my mother.
Even though she was glad I wasn’t hurt, my mother was well serious with me. After all, I shouldn’t have brushed off my friend’s warning.
Through this experience, I learned that it’s important to listen to people who offer a different perspective(观点). Taking the time to listen might actually save a lot of time and trouble. It certainly would have kept me from getting the “shock of my life”.

China launched its first manned spaceship at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, becoming the third country in the world to send a person into orbit after the former Soviet Union and the United States. Astronaut Yang Liwei became China’s first space man.
With a column of beautiful smoke, the Shenzhou V craft cut across a bright northwest China sky at exactly 9:00 a.m. Wednesday and went into orbit 10 minutes later.
China Central Television’s Channel One cut into its regular programming to announce the launch. The station later showed the Shenzhou V streaking(moving very fast)into the sky and disappearing, its tracer billowing (to fill with air and become larger)behind it.
Minutes after the launch, a CCTV announcer said that Shenzhou V and 38-year-old Yang Liwei, an air force pilot since 1983, had “entered orbit at 9:10.” It reported Yang was “reading a flight manual(手册) in the capsule of the Shenzhou V spacecraft and looked composed and at ease.”
The Shenzhou V launch came after four test launches of unmanned capsules that orbited the earth for nearly a week before parachuting back to China’s northern grasslands. Reports said the manned flight was expected to last about 22 hours.
President Hu Jintao watched the launch at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China’s Gansu Province.
Hu called the launch “the glory of our great motherland and a mark for the initial victory of the country’s first manned space flight and for the significant, historic step of the Chinese people in the advance of climbing over the peak of the world’s science and technology.”
He said that: “The Party and the people will never forget those who have set up the outstanding merit(贡献) in the space industry for the motherland, the people and the nation.”
“The launch of the Shenzhou V is long-awaited by the Chinese people,” Foreign Minister spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said on Tuesday. She said the flight was a key step in the “Peaceful development of space.”
