完形填空。
Will you be happy if you have a new Nike T-shirt on? Probably you will. But what if you see
a friend    1    a more fashionable (时髦的) and more beautiful one? You may not feel as satisfied
2    you expect to and the feeling of happiness may disappear in a minute.
Why are we not so happy as we should be? The secret is: we focus on (专注) what we want
instead of what we have. We keep making our list of  desires(愿望) longer and longer. As a result,
we are not pleased with what we have    3    owned. We say to ourselves, "I"ll be happy when this
desire is satisfied. " However, another desire appears when this one is met. So we still don"t feel happy
though we have got what we want. Happiness    4     when we always have new dcsires hard to satisfy.
Luckily, there is a way to be happy. Think more about what we have than what we want. Rather
than wish you were     5     to have an enjoyable vacation on the beach, think of    6    fun you have
had near home. Similarly, instead of hating to do much homework,    7    teachers for making you have
the chance to practice more. The list of what you have can also be endless. Each time you find yourself
falling into a "I wish life were different" trap (陷阱), take a deep breath and think of    8    you have ever
had.
Pay more attention to what you have, and you"ll probably get more of what you want.    9    example,
your good attitude toward doing homework can bring excellent grades in exams because   10     makes
perfect. Start to focus on what we have! The more we feel satisfied, the more happily we"ll live.

I am a writing teacher at a middle school.
At the end of a writing class, I asked the students to share what they had written. We had a new
student at the school, Al. Al had been with us for only a short while and was still trying to fit in (适应),
so I was a little surprised when he volunteered to read. I asked him to read, but inside I wished that the
other students would not laugh at him.
Al began to read, "If I had one wish, it would be to meet my dad..." He started out loud and clear.
He told how he had never seen his father. He told how he tried to be the only man in the house at such
a young age.
I took a look at the students. I knew some kids liked to laugh at others. However, all of my students
were listening. They were letting him do this, I thought. They were allowing him to share something.
"If I had one wish, it would be to meet my dad, so I wouldn"t have to close my eyes every night just
wondering what he looks like," Al finished. The class stood up and applauded (鼓掌). They all ran to Al
with hugs. My eyes got wet.
This is why I teach. I teach because I can watch kids grow and laugh and learn and love.

My mother used to ask me what is the most important part of the body. Through the years I would
guess at what I thought was the correct answer.
When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said, "My ears,
Mommy." She said, "No. Many people are deaf. But you keep thinking about it and I will ask you again
soon."
Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had contemplated the
correct answer. So this time I told her, "Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our
eyes." She looked at me and told me, "You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are
many people who are blind."
Over the years, Mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was, "No, but you are
getting smarter every year, my child."
Then last year, my Grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. My Mom looked at me
when it was our turn to say our final good-bye to Grandpa. She asked me, "Do you know the most important
body part yet, my dear? " I was shocked when she asked me this now. I always thought this was a game
between her and me. She saw the confusion on my face and told me, "This question is very important. It
shows that you have really lived your life." I saw her eyes well up with tears. She said, "My dear, the most
important body part is your shoulder." I asked, "Is it because it holds up your head?" She replied, "No, it is
because it can hold the head of a friend or loved one when they cry.
Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on sometime in life, my dear. I only hope that you have enough love
and friends that you will have a shoulder to cry on when you need it." Then and there I knew the most
important body part is not a selfish one. It is sympathetic to the pain of others.

2. What did the writer think was very important to us when his mother asked him for the first time?

Have you ever complained (抱怨) why life is so tiring? Does the sky sometimes seem dark to you?
Are your studies sometimes not successful? Well, friends, cheer up and smile all the time. If you see
the world with your warm heart, you"ll find that the whole world smiles to you.
While in school, sometimes you are tired of your lessons, but have you ever noticed the happy smile
on your teacher"s face when you did a good job?
One day it is fine. Just before you want to go out, it suddenly starts to rain. Maybe you would feel
very sad and start complaining about the weather. But dear friends, why don"t you sit down and listen to
the free concert that the nature offers you? And with the timely (及时的) rain, crops in the fields will
grow better and better and farmers will have a better harvest.
Although everyone wants to succeed in what he tries to do, sometimes failure (失败) can"t be avoided.
I think failure is not terrible, and the terrible thing is that we are afraid of it and give up hope. When we face
failure, we must be confident (信心) of ourselves, draw a useful lesson from it and try our best to finish
what we have decided to do. As a popular saying goes, "Failure is the mother of success."
Attitude (态度) decides everything. With an optimistic (乐观) attitude life is easy and pleasant. Let"s
smile to whatever we meet and the whole world will smile to us.

see all of the nice things, which is just like your life."
