again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that
memory works in the same way.
When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by
using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough
chance to become strong.
If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault (过错). But if he tells us
that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to be blamed (责备), and few of us know
that it is just his own fault.
Have you ever found that some people can"t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is
because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things; they cannot write them down in a little
notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being
exercised. So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practice remembering.
B. Your memory works in the same way as your arms and legs.
C. Everybody knows that memory works in the same way as their arms and legs.
D. Your memory can"t become strong again when you use them again.
B. not give it enough chance to become strong
C. have clever parents
D. use your arms and legs often
B. his parents" fault
C. his teachers" fault
D. his strong arms and legs
B. they can"t write them down
C. they practice remembering
D. they can remember things quickly
B. a good memory needs strong arms and legs
C. parents can make us clever
D. to remember days, names and songs

举一反三
I find English quite difficult, but very interesting. When I first started, I thought I had only to remember
the new words and learn some grammars. I know little about English idioms (习语). I thought each English
word has the same meaning in Chinese. When I learned to say "I see a book on the desk", I thought the
English word "see" was just like the Chinese word "kan". So one day when my teacher asked me, "What are
you doing?" I answered, "I"m seeing a book." "That"s wrong." The teacher said. "You don"t see a book. You
read a book. You can"t use an English word like a Chinese one. Be sure not to make the same mistake again."
After that I began to pay more attention to the differences between Chinese and English. For example, in
English we say a "high mountain", but a "tall man". In Chinese we use the same word "gao" for both. Again
in English we say "take part in the sports meeting", "attend a meeting" and "join the army", while in Chinese
we can use "can jia" for all three. Interesting, isn"t it?
So to study English doesn"t only mean hard work, it can be great fun, too! We not only have to pay
attention to pronunciation, grammar, spelling and handwriting, we also have to understand English idiom. We
can learn English well only in that way!
But all this is only a beginning and I still have a long way to go. I"ll try my best and work even harder than
before. I must speak and listen to English more both in and out of class. I must learn English well so that I
work well when I grow up.

is to learn English when your brain is only the size of a bird"s brain! That is what some birds can do.
Many different kinds of birds can copy the sounds of language. African grey parrots are the best known
for this.
Every December in London, the National Cage and Aviary Bird Show tries to find the best "talking" bird
in the world. One bird named Prudle stood out among the "talking birds". She won this prize for 12 years
from 1965 to 1976.
Prudle was taken from her nest in Uganda in 1958. She was sold to Iris Frost in Seaford, England. Prudle
knew almost 800 words in English.
Prudle was also the oldest bird in the world that lived in a cage. Ms. Frost took care of the bird until
Prudle died in 1994. Prudle was 35 years old.
A different kind of bird, not a parrot, named Puck was tested in 1993. It turned out that Puck knew more
English words than Prudle knew. Puck knew more than 1,700 words.

other animals.
In one test the old scientist put a monkey in a room where there were several boxes. Some boxes were
inside other boxes. One small box had some food in it. The scientist wanted to watch the monkey and to
find out how long it would take the monkey to find the food. The scientist left the room. He waited a few
minutes outside the door. Then he got down on his knees (膝盖) and put his eyes to the keyhole. What did
he see? To his surprise, he found himself looking into the eye of the monkey. The monkey was on the other
side of the door and looked at the scientist through the keyhole.

his sleep early this month. Mr Todde was 112 years old. He was less than three weeks away from his 113th
birthday. Record-keeping experts say he was the world"s oldest man.
His long life and that of other very old Sardinians are the subjects of a scientific project (项目) called
Akea. Luca Deiana of Sassari University is directing (指导) the study. He says the name Akea comes from
a traditional greeting (问候) on Sardinia. It means "health and life for 100 years." Professor Deiana and his
team started to collect information for the study in 1997. They identified (确定)) more than 220 Sardinians
who were centenarians-100 years old or older. His team needed three documents to make sure a person"s
age. They were a government (政府) birth record, a church record and a statement (声明) by a close family
member.
The Akea study has produced two major findings. The first is Sardinia"s extremely high number of
centenarians. The island has about 135 centenarians for every one million people. In other Western countries,
the average (平均数) is about seventy-five centenarians for every one million people. The second major
finding is an unusual rate (率) of female (女性) to male (男性) centenarians. Sardinia has two women
centenarians for every male centenarian. In central Sardinia there are the same numbers of female and male
centenarians.
Studies in other parts of the world have shown a much higher percentage (百分比) of female centenarians.
The Akea study collected information about the health and food of about 140 of the centenarians. About
ninety percent of those in the study also agreed to provide blood (血) for scientific testing. The study team
hopes to identify genetic (基因) material in the blood that can be linked to successful aging. Study leaders
say there is no single reason why people on Sardinia live so long. They believe the answer is a combination
(组合) of genetic and environmental conditions (条件).

C.300
D.400

sentences. But if we watch them, we can see that they do have ways of communicating with each other.
Can you see the rabbit"s tail which is moving up and down? When rabbits see this white tail moving up
and down, they run too. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making
a sound. It has done this by using its body language.
Many other animals use this kind of language. When a cobra is angry, it raises its head and makes itself
look fierce. This warns other animals. When a bee has found some food, it goes back to its home. It cannot
tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the
bees where the food is.
Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger comes near. A
cat purrs when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning. Sometimes
we human beings speak in the same way. We make sounds like "Oh" or "Ah!" when we are frightened or
pleased or when we drop something on our toes.
But we have something that no animals have-a large number of words that have the meanings of things,
actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other all kinds of different information in words and
sentences, which no other animals can do. No other animals have so wonderful a language as we have.
B. all animals have their own ways of communicating with each other
C. some animals say things by words as human beings do
D. animals know how to protect themselves
