people feel b l . They hope the diets will make the people healthy.
Alana was on a diet, but she didn"t like it at all. She wasn"t a 2 to eat her favorite food by the
doctor. While her brother Frank ate chocolate, she had to eat an apple. Alana was on the diet for two
months. Her doctor was pleased with her. "You have been very good," he said.“You can eat some of
the food you like best but only a little. Don"t eat too many sweets. Don"t eat too much ice-cream. If you
do, you will get a lot of weight a 3 . "
Then the doctor put Frank on a diet. It was a different kind of diet. “You c 4 eat chicken or eggs,
Frank," said the doctor. "They will make you in trouble. "
"How long will I have to be on the diet?" asked Frank.
"A long time,” said the doctor. “Maybe for the r 5 of your life. "
"But I really like chicken," said Frank.
" You said it is one of the best meat to eat. "
"It is very good food for most people," said the doctor. "But when you eat it, it will make you sick. It
is not good food for you. "
"You"re right," said Frank. "Well, I’ll eat more cake instead."

environment club, people work together to make our environment clean.
·No-garbage(垃圾) lunches. How much do you throw away after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches
in bags that can be used again. Every week they will choose the classes that make the least garbage and report them to the whole
school!
·No-car day. On the no-car day, nobody comes to school by car-not the students and not the teachers! Cars give pollution to
the air, so remember:
Walk, jump, bike or run.
Use your legs! It"s lots of fun!
·Turn off the water! Did you know that some toilets can waste twenty to forty㎡of water an hour? In a year that would fill a
small river! In environment clubs, students mend those broken toilets.
We love our environment. Let"s work together to make it clean.

It"s important to learn about protecting our environment. Here is a 5R rule for us:
1. Reduce
If you want to reduce waste, you should use things wisely. Millions of trees are being cut down to make
paper. If everyone uses a little paper carelessly and throw it out, soon we would not have any trees left.
Other things are also being wasted, and people don"t know what to do with the waste in big cities. So it is
necessary to reduce the waste
2. Reuse
You should always think of reusing the usable things before throwing them out. Give your clothes you
do not use or the ones which are too small to the poor. With a family, you may pass on such clothes to
younger brothers or sisters.
3. Recycle
Bottles, cans and paper can easily be recycled. By doing so, we save lots of time and money. For
example, coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed flat (压平) and melted (融化) and the
melted things are made for new coke cans.
4. Recover
When you buy a box of apples, there may be a few rotten(腐烂的)apples. You have two choices: one
is to throw the whole apple away, or you could cut off the rotten parts and eat the good parts. In this
way, you are recovering the eatable parts of food.
5. Repair
If one of the legs of your table is broken, you can repair it instead of throwing it away. If you want to
change for better ones, It is better for you to sell the old things or give them to other people who can use
them after doing some repair. It is true that North America is a "throw-away" society(社会). But the time
has come to change our way of life so that we can protect our environment. Every one of us should try
our best.

A. China
B. Japan
C. Australia
D. America
4. Which of the following is true?
A. We will have no resources(资源) of nature unless we can do with the waste.
B. Recycling is the best way to save resources.
C. If we waste less, we can save more resources of nature.

deserts, so people can live and grow food. They are learning a lot about the deserts. But more and more
of the earth is becoming deserts all the time. Scientists may not be able to change the deserts in time.
Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the earth.
Some places on the earth don"t get very much rain. But they still don"t become deserts. This is because
some green plants are growing there. Small green plants and grass are very helpful to dry places. Plants
don"t let the hot sun make the earth even drier. Plants don"t let the wind blow the earth away. When a little
rain falls, the plants hold the water. Without plants, the land can become a desert much more easily.

can eat and others often forget to turn off the lights when they leave the classroom.
They say they can afford these things. But I don"t agree with them. Waste can bring a lot of
problems. Although China is rich in some resources(资源) , we are short of (缺乏) others, for
example, fresh water. It is reported that we will have no coal(煤) or oil to use in 100 years.
So if we go on wasting our resources, what can we use in the future and where can we move?
Think about it. I think we should say no to the students who waste things every day. Everybody
should stop wasting as soon as possible.
In our everyday life, we can do many things to prevent waste from happening, for example,
turn off the water taps(水龙头) when we finish washing, turn off the lights when we leave the
classroom, try not to order more food than we need, and so on. Little by little, everything
will be changed. Waste can be stopped one day, if we do our best.

D. Coal.

Trees provide man with fruits and building materials in the form of wood. Without trees itwould be
impossible to build houses, boats and even bridges. Furniture such as tables, chairs andbeds is made of
wood.
In the tropics (热带地区) where it is very hot all through the year, trees protect man fromthe terrible
heat. They are also useful in preventing good and rich top soil from being washed away during heavy rains which are so common in the tropics.
If there were no tree or vegetation of some kinds to hold back the soil with their roots, heavy rains
would wash away the rich soil that is so important and necessary to agriculture(农业). The result is that
the land becomes a desert.
There are so many desert areas in the world. A long time ago these desert areas must havebeen very
rich fertile(肥的) areas, but since our ancestors in the distant past do not have enough knowledge about
science of nature, they cut down all the trees in the areas where they lived and never planted new ones.
By and by, the rich soil was blown and washed away by strong winds and heavy rains. In the end the land was turned into deserts where nothing could grow.
B. trees are not as useful now as they used to be
C. trees were more useful in the past than they are now
D. human beings have always found trees very useful
B. soil on the surface of the earth which is good for agriculture
C. soil found under the earth which is under roots of trees
D. dry soil in desert areas which is bad for agriculture
B. covered by ice and snow
C. very cold
D. very dry and useless
B. heavy rains would clean the tropics
C. the rich top soil couldn"t be held back
D. there would be no agriculture at all
B. man may take no notice of the balance of nature
C. man must do his best to keep the balance of nature
D. the balance of nature is unimportant to man
