One of the most famous department stores in New York City is Macy"s.There are over 850 Macy"s stores all over the US, but the flagship store is in Herald Square,Manhattan---just around the corner from the Empire State Building. Interestingly, Rowland Macy, the company founder ( 创始人 ), opened his first shops between 1843 and 1855, but they weren"t successful. However, Macy learned from his mistakes, and in 1858 he moved to New York. He opened his first New York store on October 18, 1858 and was immediately successful. Macy"s is especially famous for its Thanksgiving Day Parade, which marks the beginning of the Christmas season.
One of the oldest shops in London is Fortnum & Mason.
It was founded by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason in
1707 in central London. Originally, the shop only sold food, but these days, it sells all kinds of other things including clothes, books and games. It has the "Gentleman"s Department" on the top floor, a famous tea shop and several restaurants. The business started out small, but in 1761, William Fortnum’s grandson, Charles, went to work for Queen Charlotte. As a result, the royals ( 皇家 ) started shopping there and continues to now. In fact, Queen Elizabeth visited Fortnum"s last year. Fortnum"s is really famous for its hampers, which are baskets of food. There are picnic hampers and Christmas hampers that are full of wines and Christmas food. They are extremely popular, but also expensive and can cost up to £25.000.

Well, when a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it runs. When other rabbits see this tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.
Many other animals use this kind of language. When a bee found some food, it goes back to his home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.
Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger
comes near. A cat purrs (发出呼噜呼噜的声音)when pleased. Some birds make several different sounds, each with its own meaning.
But human beings have something that no animals have –-- a large number of words about things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information, to tell or inform other people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remind ourselves of the things what have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animals can do this. No animals has the wonderful power of language.
No one knows how man learned to make words. Somehow he learned to make them. As centuries went by, he made more and more new words. This is what we mean by language. People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for example, contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not know all these. The words we know are called vocabulary. We should try to make our vocabulary larger. Read as many books as possible. When we meet a new word, look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary is the Most useful book.

Americans lived on farms, the typical family had many children. In a farm family, parents and their children
often lived with grandparents. Often too, uncles and aunts lived nearby. But when industry became more
important than agriculture in American life, families became smaller because industry requires workers who are
ready and able to move off the land and to move again whenever necessary. And large families cannot be moved
from place to place as smaller families can. So, at present people tend to have smaller families.
In the future, because of industrialization, a typical family will be required to move even more often than
now, so families will be even smaller. The typical family may remain childless and consist only of a man and a
woman. A small number of families may take raising children as their chief work. At the same time they may
also raise other people"s children, leaving those families free to move from job to job.
B. Influence of science and industry on American families.
C. Harmful effect of industrialization.
D. Social problems resulting from the highly developed science and industry in America.
They are afraid of their parents. But sometimes they do not do what their parents tell them to do. When this
happens, a parent tries to help the child to do the right thing. When this does not work, the parent usually
punishes the child.
There are many things that a parent can do. One thing that people have done is to spank (打屁股) the
child. When a parent spanks a child, he will use his hand or something hard to strike the child on the bottom.
The parents want to show their children that they have done something wrong.
One problem with spanking is that it teaches the child to hit someone when they do not like what the
other person is doing. Another problem with spanking is that the parent is usually angry and can hit the child
too hard. Sometimes parents will use spanking for everything and not try other ways to get the child to do the
right thing.
Many parents are not sure of what to do instead of spanking. Some people think that spanking is okay.
Some think that the law lets them do it. The courts (法院) say that parents have the right to teach their children
how to behave.
Other things should be tried before a parent decides to spank a child. Taking a more child-friendly way
can help as well. Giving a child more than one choice is another thing that can be tried.

understand them. They often think their parents are too strict with them.

themselves 2 when they were young.

that they grow up and they can deal with any difficult things. Older people worry more easily. Most of them
plan things 4 and don"t like their plans to be changed.

else. But they don"t mean to cause (引起) any trouble. They just want to be 6 and they want to make a
new culture (文化) of their own.
Sometimes you even don"t want your parents to say " 7 " to what you do. You want to stay at
home and do what you like.
If you plan to control your 8 , you"d better win your parents over and try to get them to 9
you. If your parents see that you have high sense of responsibility (责任), they will 10 give you the right
(权利) to do what you want to do.
