ten-year-old boy puts up one finger with his eyes still closed, begging for one more minute to sleep.
Why is he so sleepy? Because, like thousands of student "early birds" in China, he has to get up
before 6 a.m. every morning.
School students usually need eight to ten hours" sleep a night. But in Shanghai, it"s reported that 90%
of the students do not get enough sleep. And studies show that without a good night"s sleep, students seem
to be weaker than they should be. Many become near - sighted as a result.
Li Ming, a student at Qinghua High School, said that he usually goes to bed after 11 p.m. But when
he has exams coming up, he can stay up as late as midnight. This "night bird" lifestyle has made many
students nod off(打瞌睡)in class. Li Ming said that it is during afternoon classes that he feels most
sleepy. "My parents are usually happy to see me studying so late," he said. "They think I work very hard
and they make me cups of coffee."
However, not all parents are happy about this. "My daughter gets up so early. She looks tired and it
really hurts me." said one of the parents. Why don"t so many students get enough sleep? Now many members

myself," he said.
One day when he saw many toy dogs in a toyshop, he had an idea. "Why not do some kinds of
things and relax myself?" Then he began to make model planes, model ships and something else. The
things that he had made by himself don"t look as professionally (专业地) made as those in the shops,
but he likes doing it.
"It is not as much fun to play with things which are bought expensively from the shops," he said.
Now his bookshelves are full of many kinds of things he has made. They are very beautiful, and his
family and friends like them very much.
More and more young people are like Yang, making or creating (创造) things on their own.

by the advertisements on the Internet. Something is said to be a bargain. but it isn"t always cheap. And
some so-called new things just have a new outside.
However, shopping online is a kind of fashionable thing today. I love to buy things of daily use, so I
often get lots of information about them on websites online. For example, if I want an MP3, I can choose
my favorite one, and look for what the users like best, then decide whether to buy it or not. And at the
same time, you don"t have to go to a shop or walk around in a crowded shopping area, so you don"t have
to waste much time. The Internet is really useful for shopping, but be careful not to spend too much.
Judge the following sentences true (T) or false (F) according to what you read.
( )1.If you see the advertisements on the Web, you should never believe them.
( )2.The advertisements online are sometimes false.
( )3.The underlined word "bargain" here means something cheap
( )4.The writer often buys things like an MP3

crosswalks . If people are in a crosswalk , cars must stop to let them walk .
There are rules for bus drivers , too . If bus drivers smoke , drink or make phone calls while driving, they

water while we say we are short of water. Why? Because about 97% of water on the earth is sea water
which we 2 drink or use for watering plants. Man can only drink and use the 3% of the water that
comes from rivers and lakes. And we can"t even use all of that, 3 some of it has been dirty.
Now more water is needed. The problem is: Can we avoid (避免) a serious water shortage later on?
First, we should all learn how to 4 water. Secondly, we should find out the ways to reuse it. 5
have always been making study in this field. Today, in most large cities water is used only once and then
6 to the sea or rivers. But it can be used again. Even if every large city reused its water, still there
would not be 7 . What could people turn to next?
The sea seems to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the sea. All that needs to be 8
is to get the salt out of the sea water. This is 9 , but it"s already in use in many parts of the world.
Scientists are trying to find a cheaper way of doing it. So you see, if we can find a way out, we"ll be in
